+ Old Harbour Bay Fishing Village from the blog Eat, Explore, Live

E E

atExploreLive ventured to one of Jamaica’s well-known fishing villages and, of course, we decided to share some of what we found.

Old Harbour Bay Fishing Village in St Catherine is one of the largest fishing villages in Jamaica and is on the coast of the island, 3 miles from the town, and one of the best deep-water piers in the island. What you might encounter while at Old Harbour Fishing Village: t t t

The chance to meet the amiable and bountiful fishermen and women from the village who make the effort to ensure you get value for your money (based on first-hand experience). Affordable seafood (fish of various types, lobster, conch and other seafood). Not to forget a hot cup of fish tea.

weet Belle, located in Barbican Business Centre, is much more than the name suggests. This eatery, which began as a confectionery, has branched out to include a variety of options such as breakfast, light lunch fare, desserts, coffee and even a weekend brunch menu. Those looking for sweet treats will be impressed, as there is a wide selection of desserts! Some of the most popular items include the Nutella cupcakes, sticky buns and the key lime tart. They also host children’s birthday parties (complete with a cupcake design station) and even baby showers.

+ Trudi Hamilton Do you have a weekend must see/do/eat?

The beach! My weekends must involve seeing water and feeling sand because the beach is my happy place. If that’s not possible (would have to be because of something major), I will try to enjoy doing stuff that involves being outdoors. Recently, I went on an off-road trip up to Holywell with a big group of people and it really was a great day.

What has been your best weekend ever?

Is it bad to say that I consider most of my weekends the best ever – that is until the next? So many come to mind as being truly memorable, but I would have to say Carnival weekend 2010. Carnival season is one of my favourite times of year and that year, all my friends and I went to every soca event that was happening! We partied extra hard and found out how much more fun you can have if you drink Coffee Patron. It was pretty epic.

Who are your weekends usually spent with?

My weekends are usually spent with my girlfriends. I get together with them at some point or another, and on those weekends I get out of town (which is pretty often), I try to drag a couple of them along with me if they aren’t too busy.

What spot/event/ activity would you recommend for any given weekend?

The Devon House pub is a great weekend spot. I love the outdoor vibe and there is always some action going on there.

DRINK OF

CHOICE: Mojito

What would be your ideal weekend?

My ideal weekend would be: Friday – Meet up with some friends after work for dinner and drinks and seeing where the streets take us (usually Fiction). Saturday – Wake up bright and early and grab breakfast at Tea Tree Creperie, which is a cute little crepe joint on Hillcrest Avenue. I’m all about random flexes and they usually end up being the best time ever, so I would just go with the flow of the day. Sunday – A sunny beach day at Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay. It is easily one of the best beaches in Jamaica! Perfection.

+ The Green House Villa

I

Hope Bay, Portland

t wasn’t hard for our friend Anya to convince a group of us to have a weekend away in lush Portland for her birthday. For us, just say beach, and the answer is yes. We nipped out of Kingston after work on Friday for The Green House, a rented fourbedroom villa in Hope Bay, which accommodates a maximum of nine persons. With some of us staying elsewhere, we sat down for a delicious dinner on the veranda, accented by the sound of waves lapping against the shore. The dinner deserved its own #iLike: a mouthwatering beef tenderloin catered by Anna-Kay Lazarus and a fantastic shrimp

pasta prepared by the birthday girl’s mom. The meal was spread across a table set for 14, decorated with candles and seashells on the wrap around veranda and was a beautiful sight. A major highlight of the weekend was Diane, a lovely cook that came highly recommended. She prepared delicious Jamaican breakfasts, on both days, as well as a final lunch before we had to hit the road on Sunday. Though the sea there isn’t ‘swim-safe’, we were perfectly situated for trips to the beautiful Winnifred Beach and Somerset Falls. The Green House is a must return.
