+ Bleu Weekend May 25-28

G

rand Palladium is the place to be this Labour Day weekend for the second staging of the Bleu Movement. Named the ‘Caribbean’s largest pool party’ because of non–stop partying all weekend long, the four events will take place on the resort’s property. It features a bar stocked with Appleton and Absolut (the weekend’s main sponsors) and music to fuel the fire, plus special performances by Swappi and Michelle X.

Tips to survive the weekend: • Keep hydrated – The amount of alcohol you will probably consume may definitely dehydrate you. Make sure to sneak some water in there between rounds. • Implement a buddy system – If 4am comes around and you aren’t in your bed, then you will have someone to ensure that you aren’t sleeping on the pool chairs. • Pack the essentials – Carry sunblock and the hangover musts - Panadol, Andrews and bottled water.

If you are headed to Grand Palladium this weekend, you are going to have a crazy, fun filled weekend. Not going to make it for the entire weekend? Then get day or night passes for US$60 each. Just remember to drink responsibly and be safe.

+ Brandon McKoy Owner of Ping Links

What is your typical weekend?

A year ago, it would have been ‘club, club and more club’, but now that I’m a working man, I’ve had to cut back. And by ‘cut back’ I mean at least one club outing per week, if it’s not a country weekend or no other big parties are happening. So, that means either Uber at Club Privilege or Fiction on a Friday. And, of course, Saturday night has to be Ultra at Top Floor Quad (not that I’m an official Ultra Inclusive ambassador or anything). The weekend also has to include one lazy day, which is usually Saturday, as I have to recover from the night before. As for Sunday? Hello, beach.

Do you have a weekend must see/do/ eat?

Must see are my family members and friends. It’s the perfect time to get everyone together after a stressful week to relax and live a little! I have to eat at least one Jamaican dish, which means a stop at my mom’s house. Ackee and salt fish, stew pork, stew peas, curry chicken – one of these will be great or bring it all on!

What has been your best weekend ever?

Hands down, the hardest questions I’ve had to answer in a very long time. I’m going to go with spending the weekend at Pigeon Island, a cay a few miles out from Old Harbour. I went with a friend on his boat and we met up with a few other boats out there. It was the ultimate ‘chill out weekend’. It’s a totally different vibe out there, away from the usual parties and club scene. At night there was a big bonfire, some good music and drinks on the beach. There was amazing food cooking all day, including the fresh fish that the boats caught on the way out. All of this, combined with amazing company, made for one of my best weekends ever.

Brandon partying with friends

Who are your weekends spent with?

If it’s ‘on season’, that is when the ‘foreigners’ come home during the holidays and the social scene kicks into high gear, I’m mainly occupied with friends all weekend.

What would be your ideal weekend?

A little relaxing, a little partying, a little friend/family bonding, great food and no hangover, make for my very ideal weekend.

What spot would you recommend for any given weekend?

As cliché as it sounds, I’d have to say the beach. Make a little use of living in a tropical country! If you want to relax, it’s the perfect place to relax, if you want to party, it’s the perfect place to party, if you want to do an activity, the possibilities are endless.

Your weekend drink is?

Hennessy and Red Bull. Allows me to party hard during the night and recover easily the morning after and be fully functional for the next day. Rum or vodka = bed all day the next day.

DRINK OF CHOICE: Red Bull and Hennessy

+ Holywell Park

I

f you want an out-of-the-ordinary experience, then grab a couple friends and make the trip to Holywell at the Blue and John Crown Mountains National Park. It is about an hour’s drive from Kingston – a close escape from the noise and stress of town life. The drive itself will set the day off right because after passing through Papine, it gets quiet and there is nothing better than that. It’s great to wind down your windows and take in the fresh air, because we probably rarely get it anywhere in the vicinity of Kingston. When we got to the park, we had to pay a fee of $100 per person to use the picnic areas. But once we were inside, we chose a gazebo and set up camp. The coolers were stocked with the supplies for the day, but the real outdoor experience was getting a fire started and barbequing burgers, hot dogs or whatever else the crew had decided was on the menu. It was a chill day: we ate, we drank (and drank) and then ate some more. And we ended the day with the outdoor staple, s’mores. It’s such a great vibe to be up in the hills and to look out on the entire city. It’s definitely a trip worth taking.

Tips for your Holywell trip: • Bring a sweater with you because it gets a little chilly. • Carry all your supplies (coal, paper towels, garbage bags, etc.) as the park doesn’t provide any of that.
