Things to experience on Jamaica’s South Coast

Floyd’s Pelican Bar – Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth

ar

an B

Take a canoe out to the bar located on a sandbar about a quarter mile out to sea. Spend the day eating a great seafood lunch, drinking and taking in some sun.

Little Ochi – Alligator Pond, Manchester

This was once a seafood lovers haven in Alligator Pond, Manchester but now it is known as one of Jamaica’s favourite spots to eat. There is something for everyone on the menu and the view alone makes it worth a visit.

Treasure Beach- Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth

Visit one of the four public beaches or small coves that are available to bask in the sun and take a sea bath. There are some great spots for snorkelling, but bring your own equipment as they are not provided.

YS Falls- YS Estate, St Elizabeth

The seven-tiered cascading waterfall is located on YS Estate on a working cattle and horse farm. There are many wading pools fed by underground springs and a canopy ride that will take you over the falls for the best view.

Birding at Bluefields- Bluefields, Westmoreland

Jamaica is home to 28 endemic species of birds, more than any other island in the Caribbean. The day-and-a-half tour takes place in the Bluefield Mountains and will include lunch at a restaurant overlooking the sea.

+ Meet the MJW 2012 Contestants Michaela Ramlal, 22 Ms Maybelline New York What would be your ideal weekend? Spending quality time with my family and close friends at one of the lovely rivers in Portland. In the summer or on holidays, my family plans a weekend where we all drive down to Portland and have a lovely gettogether by the river, with music and lots of food.

Lauren Mackay, 22 Ms Canadian Brothers Development Ltd What is your favourite thing to do on the weekend? Spending time with my family and my animals (four dogs, two cats, one fish, two turtles, two parrots). I also enjoy gardening with my mother and bird watching at my house; we have about 15 species of wild birds in our yard. Anything outside and I’m happy.

Ava Campbell, 22 Ms Fit Shoppe

Trishauna Clarke, 24 Ms Venus Embrace

Where is your favourite weekend spot?

What would be your ideal weekend? My ideal weekend would be a getaway to an exotic location in Jamaica, worry-free, surrounded by family, friends, fun and unlimited seafood and drinks. Family is number one in my book. I share my best memories with my loved ones.

Blue Beat in Montego Bay, an ultra cozy retreat from the week’s pace. It is relaxed enough to help me release the tie-ups of the week (while sipping my favourite brown sugar martini), yet it accommodates kicking my heels off to dance to electronic house music.

Chevell Powell, 21 Ms Appleton Special Jamaican Rum What is your favourite weekend getaway? My favourite weekend getaway rests at the RIU Resort on the lovely north coast. Scrumptious cuisine to replenish my taste buds, pearly white sand beach, a radiant, beaming sun and great Jamaican entertainment – such an escape from the everyday city life here in Kingston. It’s a wonderful experience, a chance to relax and forget about everyday stress.

Owner, No Brand Chemicals

What is your typical weekend? My typical weekend, I am generally at work catching up on accounting, paperwork, administration or running production facility in my factory to fill orders for the coming week. By the time evening comes around, I usually take my wife to dinner or to catch a movie or play games at friends’ houses. Do you have a must-eat for the weekend? No, not really. My wife and I are pescatarians (vegetarians that eat fish), but we do generally eat at Gloria’s at Port Royal or from a small restaurant in Stony Hill called Country Style. Which do you prefer: to stay in or hit the town? A mix of both. We won’t generally go out just as a couple, but our friends still party like they are 19, so we do join them at times at clubs, sessions or bars/pubs. When we do go out, we typically stay in Kingston. If you could choose one place for a weekend getaway, where would it be and why? Goblin Hill in Portland. It is our usual get-away hideout when we need a break from our busy schedules. We use this time to catch up on rest and just focus on each other. It is an excellent place to get out of the hustle and bustle of Kingston.

Your weekend drink is... Daiquiri or lemon slush from TGI Friday. Your most unforgettable weekend would be.... Would have to be a weekend in Las Vegas in 2007 with my mom, my wife and her family. We went to see Lance Burton’s Magic Show, watched Cirque du Soleil’s O, watched the water show at the Bellagio, did a little gambling and actually (for once) went crazy shopping, as stores in Las Vegas can be affordable.

Bad Dawg Sausages

Read this wknd

The yellow cart has probably been at

many of the events that you have visited recently, selling these delicious hot dogs. The idea of a branded food cart is pretty novel to Jamaica and makes you feel like you stepped into an episode of Eat Street, a popular Food Network show about food trucks. There is usually a line (it moves pretty quickly), but it’s definitely worth the wait. When you order, there is a choice of add-ons like grilled onions, relish or cheese, plus they offer the usual condiments and even a home-made pepper sauce. Choose your preferences and dig in. The hot and juicy sausage, made with real meat, will not disappoint and you may be tempted to have another. Just to warn you: it might get a little messy, so get extra napkins.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller ‘The best of all the Greeks’— strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.
