Peter Tosh forum to celebrate the reggae icon’s birth

T

he annual Peter Tosh Symposium takes place tonight, October 19th at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) at the UWI Mona. Entitled ‘Peter Tosh -Reggae Revolutionary and Equal Rights Advocate’, the event will celebrate the 68th anniversary of the reggae icon’s birth. It will be even more special this year as he was posthumously awarded Jamaica’s third highest honour, the Order of Merit (OM) on Heroes Day on Monday. Panellists will include Herbie Miller, Tosh’s former manager and curator of the Jamaica Music Museum at the Institute of Jamaica; Dr Clinton Hutton, musicologist, painter, and lecturer in the Department of Government; Professor Carolyn Cooper, founder and former director of the Reggae Studies Unit at the Mona Campus of UWI, as well as Tosh’s children Niambe and Dave. Renowned as a reggae icon and a founding member of reggae super-group, The Wailers, Tosh was for equal rights and justice. The symposium is from 6pm to 8:30pm and will be chaired by Dr Michael Barnett, lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work at the UWI, Mona.

Family Hot Spots 1

2

Aquasol Beach Park – Montego Bay, St James Your family will stay occupied all day with more than 10 water sports, including snorkelling, jet skiing and swimming, plus two full-sized tennis courts, a gym, a volleyball court, a bar and grill and more. Hope Gardens and Zoo – Kingston The recently refurbished zoo features new animals, improved facilities and even more beautiful landscaping. Have lunch from the new canteen on any of the shaded picnic benches and tables throughout the property. Learn about the more than 30 animals on the 60acre property.

Want to pull the kids away from the video games and television this weekend (and have a little outdoor fun yourself)? We’ve compiled a list of family-oriented spots across Jamaica for you to choose from. Whether you’re a nature lover or an adventure seeker, we’ve got you covered.

3

Jamaica Zoo – Lacovia, St Elizabeth The zoo boasts 25 different animals including a lion, a llama, zebras, monkeys, crocodiles and toucans. Kids will love the petting zoo, where they can pose with Lizzy the iguana, Peter the python and Sof the crocodile. It also features a large play area.

4

Devon House – Kingston Enjoy an educational tour of the 130-year-old property, then relax on the grounds with a sweet treat from one of the pastry shops on location. Also try the delicious Devon House I Scream.

Silvia Njoki is a freelance stylist and fashion writer living in Nairobi, Kenya. She is an avid traveller, but when in town, she loves hosting friends from all over the world and partying at the hottest dancehall clubs in Nairobi. Her love for Jamaican culture doesn’t stop there: she attends many reggae concerts and sometimes gets the privilege of interviewing and hanging out with some of our biggest celebrities right there in Kenya. Without a doubt, Silvia’s weekends are more than exciting, they are a true cross-cultural experience.

IN2ITION The best of dancehall and soca One venue. Two stages. Two different shows. Next Saturday, October 27, In2ition will bring the best of dancehall and soca to the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex in Montego Bay. The dancehall lineup includes Lady Saw, I-Octane, Konshens, Tommy Lee, Aidonia, Jahvinci and DeMarco, while the soca stage will be jamming to the likes of Machel Montano, Destra, Patrice Roberts, Lil Rick, Shal Marshall and others. We’re giving away two pairs of answer our Facebook and Twitter trivia question at 1pm tomorrow.

Weekend family activities It’s a fact: many families don’t spend a lot of time together on the weekend as members prefer to ‘do their own thing’. This weekend, we recommend some simple activities you can do to-

Friday Relax, unwind, chill Friday is the start of the weekend, so use this day to kick back. Watch a movie together; go out to an event; have a games night; play some old school music or new tunes and dance up a storm.

Saturday Play, reminisce, laugh Saturdays are when most activities take place, but carve out a slot of time to hang out together. Go through old photo albums (remember those?) and make fun park or a place of seclusion where you can share upcoming plans and reminisce on good times.

Sunday Create, taste, enjoy Sundays are the best days to relax and cook up a storm! Make Grandma’s stew peas or potato salad; get the kids involved for the easier tasks. Moms, take this time to pass on important traditions to your little ones and encourage them to experiment with you. Use the time to make good memories and good food.
