Ginger Knight’s ‘Whiplash’ at The Philip Sherlock Centre
T
he Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at the University of the West Indies, Mona, has presented some of the best plays in the island for more than 40 years. This weekend, the centre will host the second staging of the University Players’ two-weekend presentation of Ginger Knight’s play, Whiplash. Set in Jamaica during 1970s, the play follows the adolescent jour-
ney of two brothers, Alton (played by Orlando Lawrence) and Dennis (played by Brian Johnson) and shows the crippling effect politics has on their relationship, along with their mother (played by Nadean Rawlins) and Dennis’s girlfriend (played by Shanieque Brown). The play continues tonight and Saturday, starting at 7:30pm with Sunday’s show at 6pm. Tickets are $1,000; students pay $500.
Since winning Digicel Rising Stars in 2009, Brown Sugar, now known as Shuga, has been quietly learning the ins and outs of the business. The time away from the spotlight has given her well-needed perspective, resulting in a name change, new image, a recording contract with Penthouse Records and the recent launch of her mixtape.

What do you love doing on a weekend?
Sleep! (Laughs) I’m from Montego Bay, so most of my weekends are spent driving from Kingston to go there and bond with my six-year-old son and relax. I like family time. I like going the beach. I like spending time with people I can learn from, movies and I love to make mus
Who is Shuga?
Shuga and her son
I’m a normal person striving for greatness. I believe anything can happen when you put your mind to it.
What have you been up to since you won Rising Stars?
The music business its about timing. I’ve been to a lot of studios and a lot of material hasn’t been put out. Right now, I have a mixtape out called Complicated Love with two singles, 9.58 and Bedroom Punisher, gaining steady radio rotation.
Your debut album comes out in February. What can people expect?
Walk with your insulin shot because it’s all sweetness on the album. I sing about real struggles, things that inspire me and I hope the album will have songs that everyone can relate to. A night on the town
