Liverpool Football Club celebrates its 121st birthday. The club was founded after a dispute between the Everton FC committee and John Houlding, the club president and owner of the land at Anfield. Despite its contentious beginnings, Liverpool has won more European titles than any other English club: five European Cups, three UEFA Cups and three EUFA Super Cups.

Jurgis Bielinis’ birthday is commemorated as the ‘Day of the Book Smugglers,’ in commemoration of his contributions to retaining the Lithuanian culture while the country was occupied by the Soviet Union. Books in the native tongue were deemed illegal and the ban was not lifted until 1904. During the last years of the ban, an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 books were smuggled into Lithuania annually.

St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, grew up in a relatively wealthy family in Great Britain until he was kidnapped by Irish bandits. After escaping some years later, he studied for the priesthood and was ordained a bishop, returning to Ireland to spread the gospel. His death on March 17, is commemorated annually as St Patrick’s Day - ironically, with much beer drinking.

This Irish classic is the perfect St Patrick’s Day brew, whether you’re having a party at home or just chilling by yourself.

McMullan’s Irish Coffee 1½ ounces Jameson Irish whiskey 1 heaping teaspoon of brown sugar 6 ounces of hot coffee 2 ounces cocoa-infused double cream

Warm a stemmed red wine glass or footed coffee glass with hot water. Add Jameson Irish whiskey to the glass and stir in brown sugar. Add hot coffee and allow it to settle completely. Spoon cocoa-infused double cream over the top. If desired, use a stencil to garnish with the hot-chocolate powder design of your choice. You can make your own cocoa-infused cream by combining whipping cream, cocoa powder, cinnamon and vanilla in a bowl with a hand-held mixer. Guys’ Day In

F

or those of us who don’t work on the weekends, Saturday and Sunday mornings are normally punctuated by two things: football and bacon. There is nothing like the tingle of pre-match anxiety as you put on your favorite club’s jersey in anticipation of the opening whistle of a Barclay’s Premiere League match day. While you are feasting your eyes on beautiful football (unless you’re a Stoke City fan), you are filling your stomach with the best breakfast your kitchen has to offer. Two hours later, the football fever still burns, so you do what any Playstation 3 owner would do: call up your friends for a FIFA 13 tournament. There’s no better excuse to stay indoors, eat junk food and hurl expletives at digital referees. Friends can’t come over? That’s what the online multiplayer format was made for. When all is said and done, sometimes a weekend spent indoors isn’t such a bad thing at all.

You’ve visited about 14 countries in your lifetime. What are your top 3 and why?

Wow! If I can pick only 3, then it would be Greece, Sweden and Aruba in that order. Greece has been on my bucket list and I had the opportunity to travel there in December 2012. It’s my top choice simply because of the country’s rich history and culture. The first time I saw snow was when I visited Sweden and it was also the first and only time

I’ve been ice-skating! Aruba is dear to my heart as it was the first country I ever visited.

Where have you spent your best weekend and what did you do?

Hmmm… I have had a lot of memorable weekends, but one of my best was in London with friends who took me to Borough Market, where I had my first kangaroo and ostrich burger. That same weekend, I visited Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and to top it all off, I was almost attacked by a duck in Hyde Park!

What was your most recent travel adventure?

My latest travel adventure was to Orlando in February with some of my closest friends. We visited Disney World, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and some other great spots.

The 103-year-old athletics spectacle known simply as ‘Champs’ began at Sabina Park on June 29, 1910, with only six schools. Today, the event has grown into one of the world’s most prestigious track and field events – certainly the most well-recognised games for high school students – with more than 150 school competing.
