Mario Evon Name: Mario Evon Singer

Studied at: Berklee College of Music

musical influences: Boyz II Men, Brian McKnight, Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Bob Marley

What do you do? I’m a musician, singer-songwriter, who happens to be a medical doctor.

How do you typically spend your weekends? I go partying sometimes, I like to dance a lot, interestingly enough.Typical weekend, Friday night could be MVP on the party scene. I like to link up with my parents, that usually happens on a Sunday. Because I don’t live with them anymore so I go visit them on Sundays, eat some Sunday dinner if that’s there. Catch up with them and hang out for a while. Sometimes I go to the beach on Sunday, I love to go to Ft Clarence every now and again to eat some fish and festival. A Saturday might just be an extension of a partying, or sometimes we just go out and eat. We go and have drinks, go to Cru, or go to The Pub. We’ll go to Market Place, I like Chinese Food, and I do like Pan Chicken, so Northside Plaza.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be? Brazil right now, it reminds me of Jamaica. And probably is different but seems diverse in terms of class range, you have a rich and a poor and in terms of racial mix up. It’s all very interesting to me, so I’ve been very curious to go there for a while.

What has been your most memorable performance? One of my most memorable performances was performing on Amateur Night at The Apollo in Harlem, New York. The audience is allowed to boo so if you’re good they cheer you, if you suck they boo you and then The Sandman comes out. The new person’s called The Executioner but I made it to the final round and that place is intense. If you look weird, if you make a mistake, they will boo your butt off the stage. So making it to the final round was intense but just being at The Apollo, in The Apollo, rubbing their Tree of Hope as they call it, which is some tree from Harlem that they cut down and keep in the theatre, it’s a legendary tree, if you don’t rub the tree they’ll boo you. Being on the stage, and winning twice and then tying for third and placing in the finals, It was intense and it’s definitely high up there on the memorable experiences.
