LIFT UP JAMAICA his weekend, the Little Theatre will move to the sounds of The Ashe Company and Dance Theatre Xaymaca (DTX) as they complete the second of their two-weekend restaging of the award-winning musical, Lift Up Jamaica.
Created in 2000, this staging of the musical is in tribute to Jamaica 50 and follows young people from very different backgrounds, who must overcome their prejudices and phobias before realising that they each play a role in improving Jamaica. Lift Up Jamaica, examines the country’s proverbial uptown vs downtown rivalry, using heated musical duels where both social groups sing with themes of boast and envy and eventual unity. New to the cast is Digicel Stars 2012 winner, Sharona Jonas. Both Saturday’s and Sunday’s shows begin at 8pm. Tickets cost $1,500, and will be available at Juici Patties (New Kingston, Liguanea and Half Way Tree), Michi Supercentre, Wolmer’s Prep, Loran V and The Ashe Centre.
TEDx Jamaica 2012

wenty-five years ago, TED, a non-profit organisation devoted to “ideas worth spreading”, started as a four-day conference in California, USA. The annual conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes and their talks are then made available – for free – at TED.com. TEDx (‘x’ indicating an independently organised event) was created to give communities, organisations and individuals outside of the US the same opportunity to spark deep conversation and dialogue, through a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos. Now in its third year, TEDx Jamaica has featured speakers such as Bruce James, president of the MVP Track Club, Marvin Hall, the social entrepreneur behind the robotics programme Lego Yuh Mind and Barrington Irving, the youngest person and first black pilot to fly solo around the globe. This year’s event will take place tomorrow, October 27, at the Courtleigh Auditorium under the theme #AccomplishWhatYouWill. The conference will feature Olympic gold medallist Donovan Bailey; executive director of the Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB) Group Donna DuncanScott; educator Melvyn Tennant; modern dance choreographer Garth Fagan; entrepreneur and author Felicia Hatcher; surgeon and inventor Paul Ramphal; maestro Jon Robertson and composer Shirley Thompson. The event starts at 9am and ends at 4pm. Tickets are available at Bookophilia and Cannonball Cafe and cost $2500 (includes snack lunch and refreshments) and $5000 (premium – includes threecourse lunch).
