The Smithsonian Institution Created August 10, 1846 The Smithsonian Institution was created on this day in 1846 following its induction into law by then President James K. Polk. In 1829, James Smithson -British chemist- allegedly died in Italy, leaving behind a will stating that in the event that his only nephew died without any heirs, his whole estate would go to the United States of America under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for “the increase and diffusion of knowledge”.

National Stadium Hosts First Event August 11, 1962 The Jamaica National Stadium opened on this day in 1962, hosting its first ever event - the 9th Central American and Caribbean Games. The Games, which started on this same day, had participants from 14 countries.

Guinness Steak Sandwich

1 cup Guinness beer 1/2 cup finely chopped sweet onion 1/3 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary (or 1 teaspoon dried rosemary) 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 pound boneless rib-eye steaks, cut 1 1/2 - 2 inches thick 1 large red onion, cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon salt Freshly ground pepper, to taste 1 french bread/ ciabatta bread, cut into 1/2-3/4 inch thick slices

MethOd 1. Combine beer, sweet onion, soy sauce, rosemary, garlic and Worcestershire sauce in a large sealable plastic bag, add the steaks, seal it, shake and turn it, then refrigerate for 12 to 18 hours. 2. Preheat a grill to medium heat. 3. Remove the steaks from the marinade and pat dry. 4. Reserve 1 cup marinade from bag. 5. Fold a 12-inch-long piece of heavy-duty foil in half and crimp up the edges to create a lip 6. Brush onion slices with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper and place in foil sheet then place the sheet on the grill. 7. Place the steaks directly on the grill rack and grill both the steaks and vegetables until browned on the f irst side, 5 to 7 minutes. 8. Turn steaks and vegetables to their opposite side and grill until the steaks are cooked through and the vegetables are soft and lightly browned, about 5 minutes more. 9. Remove steaks and vegetables from the grill and let rest for 5 to 10 minutes. 10. Coat the slices of bread with olive oil and lightly grill or toast them. 11. Meanwhile, place the reserved 1 cup marinade in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Boil until reduced by about half, 7 to 10 minutes. 12. Slice the steak and divide them and the onions among the slices of bread and drizzle with reduced sauce. Cover with other slices of bread respectively.
