+ Highlights from Calabash Jubilation! 50

M

aking its return after taking a break last year, the Calabash Literary Festival lived up to expectations and delivered a whole lot more. Literary lovers from near and far flocked to Treasure Beach last weekend to take in the sights and sounds of the largest literary festival in the Caribbean. Featuring a roster of outstanding local and international writers and musicians, the festival served up readings, live performances – even a sound clash and, of course, lots of great Jamaican food. The wkndr team was in St Elizabeth to capture it all. Here are some highlights from Calabash 2012.

+ Meet the MJW 2012 Contestants Sheena Drummond, 20 Miss Pryce Construction Ltd What event or activity would you recommend for any given weekend and why? A get-away to some place in the countryside of Jamaica where nature is at its best. Nature is the best way to find yourself, for soul searching and the perfect way to get rid of stress. Adrianna Bryan, 22 Miss Acropolis Gaming & Entertainment Centre Where is your favourite weekend getaway? Anywhere on the north coast or Portland. I get a chance to get away from city life, to relax and enjoy the beauty of the sun, the sea, the food and interacting with people. Love getting a little bit of serenity.

Kaniggia Buckle, 22 Miss Optical Solutions If you had one free weekend, what would you do? I would gather the family - who I don’t see much, a couple good friends and go on a weekend road trip around our island. Visit Mystic Mountain, the glow-inthe-dark bay at Glistening Waters, Rick’s Cafe and get lost at Lover’s Leap. Such beautiful sights for sore eyes! Kelly-Ann Diedrick, 20 Miss Green Energy Saving Ltd. What would be your ideal weekend? Taking a long drive to the country, maybe Portland, Ocho Rios or Negril. Lying alone on the beach and basking in the sun, drinking a refreshing blended fruit punch while listening to the calming sounds of the waves, enjoying the relaxing view of the ocean to help me unwind and feel at peace.

Deanna Robins, 21 Miss Dunn’s Electrical and Lighting If you had one free weekend, what would you do? I’ve almost forgotten what a free weekend feels like! If I had a free weekend though, I would definitely spend it with family and friends. I would probably go out for dinner and a movie. My all-time favourite weekend activity is going to the beach. I absolutely love the beach!

+ Loni Jones Make-up artist

What is your typical weekend?

Weddings, weddings and more weddings. Almost every weekend I have a wedding or two, so you’ll find me in a bridal suite between Kingston, Mobay and Negril getting a wife-to-be dolled up for her big day!

Do you have a weekend must see/do/eat?

Not really, but I try to squeeze in some sort of ‘fine dining’. if there’s time and if not, then I stick with my regular local cuisine - curried goat!

Which beauty product do you absolutely have to carry for a weekend getaway?

You mean what beauty product I don’t pack? (LOL). Usually I have two product bags and a Ziploc bag full of products. But if I had to choose one, it would be my NARS Aqua Gel Hydrator. Its 87 per cent water, so it delivers maximum moisture to the skin and we know to keep skin looking great is to keep it moisturised!

DRINK OF CHOICE:

Single malt Scotch

Where is your weekend shopping spot for stylish finds?

For something quick, I run to Grandeur or Style Savvy, which are both located on Seventh Avenue Plaza. They have very affordable, trendy and stylish pieces! Usually I shop when I’m away, though.

If you had one free weekend, what would you do?

I’d rent a villa on the lagoon in Portland with friends and drink Scotch and Moscato all day - in my swimsuit, of course!

Your most unforgettable weekend would be…

All the times I did makeup on my brides and they cried because they couldn’t believe they could look that beautiful with a little enhancement! On one particular bride, I had shed a tear, too. It was pretty emotional. I feel great knowing I can bring out such joy!

+ Jerk Chicken Spring Rolls from Tracks & Records

W

hen you hear about people heading to Tracks & Records, it’s usually to watch the latest sporting event and take advantage of the wide variety of food and drinks offered. One item worth trying is definitely the jerk chicken spring rolls. After trying almost every item on the Nyammin’s menu, I keep coming back to the spring rolls. It is a perfect mix of classic Jamaican jerk chicken with the added flavours of roasted corn, scotch bonnet and cheese wrapped in a light, crunchy shell. The mix of ingredients works so well together and the creamy dipping sauce is the perfect balance to the ‘spicy’ jerk (although most of us will consider it far from spicy). With the upcoming Olympics, you will have plenty reasons to head to Tracks & Records to cheer for Team Jamaica. Be sure to try the jerk chicken spring rolls when you go.
