Quote of The Week
We can never live in the past as if it were our true home…. And it is a good thing that God draws this veil over the past even without our asking. In so doing, He allows us to live today for tomorrow with just the few memories we need of what was.

How To...
A Perfect Makeup Bag
W
omen are always on the go and they want to look their best at all times, be it at the supermarket, picking up the children from school or at a function after work. It is not always possible to fix everything before you leave home and sometimes you just want to touch up your makeup throughout the day, so carry a small, travel-sized makeup bag for everyday use. You can’t stuff all your beauty products into it, but we will help you select the essentials to keep you looking fresh and polished on the go.
1
Step :Sample Sizes The next time you are at the beauty store, think twice before passing up the samples or travel-sized options. These are perfect for your on-the-go kit. Many popular brands offer samples and travel-sized items, so you should be able to find your favourites.
2
Step : Choose Wisely You won’t always find travel-sized products, so be sure to pick the items you use most often and cannot do without. For example, if you’re a foundation type of gal, pack a pressed

powder instead of a bottle of liquid foundation. If you have after-work engagements, pack mascara and eyeliner to easily create a dramatic evening look.
3
Step
: All-in-1 Palette
Most beauty stores offer all-in-1 compact palettes featuring eye shadow, blush and lip color, so these should not be too hard to find. This is as perfect as it gets for your makeup bag. A great option to check out is Artist Palettes from NARS Cosmetics.
4
Step : Lip Gloss is always popping, blotting paper too What’s a makeup bag without a lip gloss? It is a great idea to buy two of your favourite glosses and keep one in your purse to add just the right amount of glamour or freshness to your look whenever required. Blotting papers is another one of those beauty items that a woman should always have in her makeup bag to remove oil and shine from your face and revive your ‘look’.

Helping Your Child to Succeed at School

hildren have different strengths and weaknesses academically. Every child won’t be a ‘wiz’, but there are steps parents can take to ensure their children’s success. Parents cannot expect teachers to solely bear the burden of educating their children; they must do their part by providing the necessary tools to ensure that their children are equipped for school and prepared for success. Your Style spoke to educator Devon Lawrence, who has been teaching since he left high school in 1993 and has taught in Jamaica as well as the Turks and Caicos Islands. “Parents must know their children,” he said, and play an active role in guiding them on the path to success. It is important to start working with your children from the earliest stage – basic school – to develop the right habits.

However, you can still follow and apply his advice even if your child is in high school. Here are a few of Lawrence’s pointers and our suggestions to put them into operation: TIP #1: Help your child to set clearly defined goals How to achieve this: At the beginning of the academic year, sit with your child and write down the goals they want to achieve, such as improving their Math or Science grade, and plan the steps to do so. This helps you to implement checks and balances and makes it easier to track improvement as the term progresses. Place the list in a visible position to serve as a constant reminder; such as a bathroom or dresser mirror. your style eZine

Lawrence said. Also, look outside the school for a support system to help your child succeed, such as tutors and mentors. The bottom line is to support him with positive influences all around. “The results are inconclusive, but over the years when I taught at Jamaica College and in Turks and Caicos, the students with parental support and involvement in their academic performance often perform better. On the other hand, I have seen students perform beyond expectation because of the level of involvement by teachers. Teachers themselves have a responsibility beyond the curriculum,” Lawrence stated. He added that parents must recognize that boys and girls require the same level of attention and they must always show their kids love and support. TIP #2: Know your child’s capabilities How to achieve this: You are as much a part of your child’s education as he is and when you take an active interest, you will know his strengths and weaknesses. “Parents are leaving their children to take care of themselves particularly, our boys. I believe that parents need to play a greater role in the academic development of their children/wards,” stated Lawrence. This makes it easier for you to identify their weak areas and help them as well as to note their strengths and encourage them.

TIP #3: Be Proactive It is important to let your child understand that studying should not begin only when the teacher announces a test or when exams are approaching. Encourage him to constantly revise their notes and also read ahead for the text topic. TIP #4: Use all available options How to achieve this: “Parents must get to know their children. Get involved in school-related activities. Make every effort to be consistent and insistent on good academic performance,”

Room-by-Room Spring Cleaning Checklist
B
y now you have finally settled into the fact that it is spring, traditionally the time to give your house a thorough cleaning. If you haven’t started dusting and polishing yet, fret not. Your Style is making this year’s spring cleaning a breeze with simple room-by-room checklists that will help you to work more efficiently and get the job done faster. Spring cleaning has always required a lot of effort and energy, but have you even considered that if you plan exactly what you are going to do and in what order, the job can be done in less time? Your Style has prepared four checklists for the most common rooms in a household: kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living room. Each list will help you to declutter, clean, dust and update your home for that fresh spring feeling.

Spring cleaning in Jamaica is not the same as in countries that experience winter – we don’t have fireplaces to clean out and winter linens to store, but many of us haven’t changed the curtains or rearranged the furniture since decorating for Christmas, so it can give us a renewed spirit to start the second quarter of the year. Don’t worry about how long it will take you to get the tasks done; spring cleaning does not have to be done in one day but can be spread over a couple of days and the checklist is designed as such. One of the quickest ways to get spring cleaning over and done with is to get the family involved. Giving older children the task of cleaning their rooms is a great way to ask them to pitch in. Another great idea is to task each family member with cleaning and putting away their personal items. These spring cleaning checklists are not just for the season. They can come in handy whenever it is time to give your home a thorough cleaning.
