Five Lies You Are Allowed to Tell Your Children
W
e were all taught that honest is the best policy, but it can be very difficult to explain some things to our children. We often resort to a ‘little white lie’ until they are old enough to understand exactly what happens in the real world or how stuff works. See what pint-sized stories are acceptable to tell your tots:
1. “Your eyes will become square from watching too much TV.”
Entertainment is indeed important for toddlers and their development, be it SpongeBob SquarePants or Dora the Explorer. We don’t want them to be entertained only by the television set, but it can be trying to deal with a screaming toddler every time you turn off the TV. Clinical psychologist Claire Halsey concluded that this lie is perfectly acceptable to get your child away from the TV after watching too much. “Explaining to your toddler jigsaw puzzles will give them a much richer educational experience than watching cartoons just isn’t going to work.” she says. Even though we know that too much TV won’t make their eyes square, it is good enough fib to give them an understanding that something negative could indeed result from the habit.

2.“Dying doesn’t hurt.”
Death is probably the hardest thing to explain to a child, especially when he is very young. It is even harder when you are also trying to deal with your own grief, so no one can fault you for making up a story. Your three-year-old realizes that Grandma is no longer there to kiss him goodbye before he leaves for day care in the mornings, so avoiding the subject is not the answer. “Tell them it’s nothing to be afraid of and although we’ll all die one day, it’s not for a long, long time,” explained Halsey. Your own beliefs will also play a part in explaining the topic to your toddler. Halsey says, “Whether you believe that grandma is now with the angels, has been reincarnated or has simply returned to the soil, the aim is to make you both fee better and bring a sense of comfort to the situation.”
3.“You become stronger from eating
all your greens.” Your toddler does not know the difference between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods; he only knows the difference between ‘yummy’ and ‘yucky’, so he generally prefers KFC, Burger King and ice cream. Of course, it is normal for you to want your child to learn healthy eating habits from early, so parents and their toddlers often clash at the high chair. “If this is a battle, explain to them that healthy food makes you feel good and strong, and if they eat their spinach they become brave just like Popeye”, she says. According to Halsey, the most important thing is to not
have to struggle with your toddler during meal time. Making them feel anxious and under pressure will result in them losing their appetites.
4.“The tooth fairy knows when you’ve
lost a tooth.” The tooth fairy is just a part of childhood experience, as is Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. At times, you will find yourself having to tell more than one lie to hide your tracks, but it is all worth the experience for your tot. Halsey explains, “Don’t worry that your child may not trust you again when they eventually find out the truth. They’ll be glad that you encouraged them to believe in stories while they still could and will thank you it in later life.”
5.
“You little sister was delivered by an airplane.” Every child wants to know where babies come from and nervous parents have used the stork or airplane stories to appease their children over the years. Locally, many mothers have told their children that they “fell from the sky” or that they were “presents”. Even though kids today seem to be a lot smarter than they were in previous generations and you don’t want to ‘dumb down’ your child, save the birds and the bees for the tween years when they have a clearer understanding of what’s what.

Jamaica’s

Top Supermodels
amaica’s got talent. Over the last 40 years, many Jamaican females have been able to infiltrate the international world of modeling but only a few have reaped the success and have earned the prestigious title of Supermodel. They all may be nationals of Jamaica but they’ve all taken different routes to arrive at their success. Starting from the legendary Grace Jones, we fast forward to Jamaica’s supermodelling future.
Grace Jones Born in Spanish Town, Grace Jones began her career as a supermodel during the late 1970’s. She became a very successful model in both, New York and Paris. Initially, she was viewed as being too strong’ in appearance for American publications, so she moved to Paris to further her career. Jones became a favourite of many European designers. Over time, she diversified herself and also succeeded as a musician and an actress.
Lois Samuels
Lois Samuels, a daughter of Manchester, began modeling in 1994. Highlights from her modelling career include working with everyone from Yves Saint Laurent to Calvin Klein to Banana Republic. She is now pursuing a career as a recording artiste.
Jeneil Williams
