Seven Medical Tests Every Woman Should Have on her Checklist
Y
es, you eat right and do your daily exercises; after all, you were told that these are the basics to a healthy lifestyle. But are they enough? I’m sure most of you will say “yes” but you have forgotten one important thing and that is keeping up with you basic medical test. So if you haven’t had a check with your general practitioner recently, maybe it is time that you should. Not sure of what to check for? Here is a list of the top seven medical tests that a woman should do occasionally to truly ensure that she maintains a healthy lifestyle.
1
TEST: Breast Exam/Mammogram WHO TO SEE: Radiologist, Gynecologist or General Practitioner WHY: Cancer is more treatable if detected at an early stage. Your doctor can feel or see abnormalities in breast tissue, skin and nipples that can indicate cancer. Frequency: Start at age 40 and test yearly. However, doctors recommend you start testing earlier if there is a history of breast cancer in your family. Insider tip: “Self examination is also recommended as there have been many cases where a mammogram may fail to detect a lump. This is a worldwide sensitivity,” says General Practitioner, Dayton Campbell, M.D

TEST: Pap Smear WHO TO SEE: Gynecologist WHY: This is an important test to rule out cervical cancer. It is done by collecting cells from a woman’s cervix to check for changes or abnormalities. Frequency: A woman should begin screening at 18. “After three consecutive normal results, she can move to alternate years,” says Dayton Campbell M.D
3
TEST: Blood Pressure WHO TO SEE: General Practitioner WHY: A high blood pressure result can indicate that you are at a great risk of having a stroke, kidney damage or heart disease. Frequency: Yearly as a part of a physical; however, if you have been diagnosed with hypertension or your doctor indicates that you are at risk because of family history or for whatever other reason, it is recommended that you get a home testing kit. Insider Tip: Being overweight can increase your risk of high blood pressure. Also, the risk of high blood pressure increases as one ages.

TEST: BMI / Weight WHO TO SEE: General Practitioner WHY: Name any disease and it is almost guaranteed that being overweight increases the risk. Your General Practitioner should weigh you and calculate your body-mass index, the measurement of your height relative to your weight. Frequency: Annually. Insider tip: It is a great idea to have a scale at home and weigh yourself at least once per week so that you may observe any changes in weight.
Every woman should have a physical done at least once per year.
4
TEST: Cholesterol Panel WHO TO SEE: General Practitioner WHY: Ideally, one’s cholesterol should be under 200 mg/ dL; one is at greater risk of heart disease with high cholesterol. Frequency: Starting at age 20, at least once every five years.
5
Overall, it is recommended that you get a physical done once per year for full body maintenance. If anything changes or develops in the body, your General Practitioner will detect it at an early stage. Be sure to include: blood glucose test, listening to your heart, a thyroid test if you are age 35 and over, a lymph node exam and examination of the abdomen. “Be sure to inform your doctor if you experience any abnormalities or if you are exposed to any health hazards,” says Dayton Campbell M.D.

TEST: Dental Checkup WHO TO SEE: Dentist WHY: To reduce the risk of cavities as well as to detect any gum disease, especially if one drinks and smokes. Poor dental hygiene can contribute to many other health challenges, such as developing heart disease or giving birth to premature or low birth weight babies. Frequency: Twice per year; more often if you have gum disease.
6
TEST: Hearing Test WHO TO SEE: Audiologist or certified SpeechLanguage Pathologist WHY: Hearing tests are often overlooked by most physicians. However, many people slowly lose their hearing as they age. According to a recent Essence Magazine article, this is evident in “more than 12 percent of people in their twenties and thirties who already have some form of hearing loss, according to a recent study.” Frequency: Once every 10 years until age 50; frequency increases to every three years as you get older.

and Save Money Use Rechargeable Batteries It may not sound like much at first but a little goes a long way; investing in rechargeable batteries can save you some money over time. In general, the less you rely on single-use, disposable items, the less money you’ll burn through.
B
y now you are probably saying to yourself that this “going green” phenomenon is becoming overdone. The truth is, conserving energy is not only important to save us money but for the preservation of the earth for future generations. Here are some tips that should guide you on the path to going green while saving money. Green Cleaning It’s time to go shopping for cleaning products and you’re probably worried before you even step inside the supermarket. This is because you will have less money to spend on food as cleaning products carry a hefty price tag. If you substitute green cleaning products, not only will it save you money but it is a refreshing and healthy alternative to toxic cleaning agents. There is power in the use of vinegar, baking soda, borax and elbow grease. This is guaranteed to give you spotless floors, countertops and porcelain. Put the money you save to better use. Use Vodka for Everything! Well, not quite everything, but the diversity of vodka can result in a range of money-saving applications around the home, from soothing toothaches and poison ivy rashes to deterring insects, shining surfaces and cleaning clothes. Check Your Computer Settings Research shows that 90% of desktop computers are not optimized for energy efficiency. If you are in that 90%, take a quick look at your manual or check online for green computing tips. There is great advantage in using the “sleep” and “hibernate” settings, and you can turn off your devices if you won’t use them for an hour or more. Use a surge protector to turn them all the way off so they won’t draw a “phantom load” even when shut off. Every watt counts at the end of the month.

Save Water Electricity and gas aren’t the only commodities experiencing sharp price increases in recent years. In many areas, water bills have been increasing as well, since the changes in the environment have caused our rivers to become more polluted. Therefore, it makes eco-sense and dollar “cents” to conserve. Get started on painless water conservation tips, like fixing leaky faucets and taking shorter showers. The less you use, the less you pay. Start a Garden For the past several years, our government has been promoting home gardening by encouraging everyone to “Eat what you grow and grow what you eat”. This can save you money and more importantly, provide the freshest, most delicious organic produce grown right in your own backyard. Peppers and tomatoes are some of the easiest to grow at home. Save Paper The children are constantly getting projects at school that require them to print on paper, hence you can’t avoid it. So print on both sides of the paper, but preferably recycled. Boost your printer settings and use scratch paper for notes. Paper does grow on trees and the less you waste the more cash you’ll pocket. Eliminate the waste of paper and you may just save a tree. Tune Up for Savings Simply cleaning your car’s air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10% and can save you a lot on each gallon of gas. Yet nearly one in four cars needs an air filter replacement. In addition, poor alignment forces your engine to work harder (in addition to wearing out your tyres) and this can reduce fuel economy by as much as 10%. Get a tune-up and replace that cracked gas cap to save even more. If you can’t afford a trip to the mechanic, make sure your tyres are properly inflated; that will cut down on what’s called “rolling resistance” and boost miles per gallon (mpg) a little bit. Good car maintenance pays you back.
