t is no secret that many people are struggling financially, especially in today’s economy. However, the depth of this issue goes beyond the difficulties of budgeting. Many are finding it hard to adjust their lifestyle to their current situation, still trying to “keep up with the Joneses” or trying to hide the truth while neglecting important things like their bills. Self-assessment is an important tool in managing your money. Here are four prevailing lies that can negatively impact your long-term financial prosperity:
Lie # 1
“Admitting that I have failed financially means I am a complete failure.” No one is ever a complete failure; you have just let yourself down in one area. Do not indulge in self-pity. Look back at your spending habits to find out how you got to your current position. Note what you could have done differently and apply these lessons going forward.
“I have to maintain a certain lifestyle to fit in amongst my friends.” This is the excuse of someone struggling with her own self-image. If you are marginalized by your friends because you can’t afford to keep up with their lifestyle, then they weren’t true friends to begin with. Shift your outlook on your circumstances and find your own path, one that you can comfortably afford. Reframing your thinking is the key to breaking free from a powerful spending addiction, which can be just as devastating as alcohol or drugs. It is important that you reflect on your past habits and start making conscious decisions about how you will spend your money and time. Once they are set in your mind, the right actions will follow.

Lie # 2
“It is impossible to change my spending habits.” Declaring something impossible is equivalent to saying “I won’t” of “I refuse to try”. It reflects strong resistance and inflexibility. Start with small changes, such as cutting out impulsive shopping or eating out every day. Create a budget to keep track of your income and expenses. You’ll be surprised to see how much you can actually end up saving on a monthly basis.

very need can give rise to a big opportunity, but most times we miss it because it didn’t come knocking at our doors. A true entrepreneur, however, spots this opportunity and seizes the moment. Racquel Black is one such individual. She remembers coming home from college for vacations and having her friends fall in love with her swimwear and insisting she makes purchases for them. This sparked a light bulb moment for Racquel. She considered that Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean experience summer weather almost year-round, so why not create a venture that provides swimwear expertise? Out of this pet project came All Wet Beachwear (allwetbeachwear.com), an exclusive online retailer for swimwear and beach accessories across the Caribbean that caters to every size. “The designers want to get into the Caribbean and they use me to get here,” Racquel states. AWB provides some of the top international brands in swimwear, including Aqua Bendita, Cia Maritima, Despi, L*Space, Luli Fama, Poko Pano, Vix (a local favourite) and many other high-end

brands, particularly from Brazil. “I started really small; I was all about friends of friends and I would just cater to them, see what they like, their body type and so on,” Racquel says, but it was an invitation to the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week swimwear show that cemented her plans. Today, the websiite boasts customers from the USA, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Barbados, Antigua and Australia. AWB also has a showroom where customers can preview items. “We have a base of about five hundred clients that we’ve built who have bought from us at least once and basically, out of that five hundred, we have those clients who will call in to see how a particular designer fits and this is what the showroom facilitates. Once they find the brands that fit, then they go online to make their purchase,” says the Hillel graduate. Clients can also buy on the spot, but the AWB website is the primary place to make all purchases. Racquel also credits her parents for her entrepreneurial ‘genes’, which prompted her to leave her Senior IT Manager job at UPS, where she worked for 12 years. “When you love something, it is kind of like a passion. I did an MBA in MIS (Management Information System) [but] I have always had that entrepreneurial spirit,” she says. Today, AWB boasts over 89% return clients. This keeps Racquel motivated to continue providing quality products to her clients.

Try to sleep with a satin or silk scarf over your hair or on a satin/silk pillowcase as this helps to retain some moisture in the hair and prevents your bed linen from pulling on the roots of your hair and reduces tangles. Wash your hair onlyonce per week or once per week and a half. Any more frequently and this will dry hair out. Oil your scalp on a regular basis with a natural moisturizer like shea butter. Use a daily moisturizer for your strands as well. Comb your hair out while it is wet and relatively slick to remove tangles and reduce breakage. A deep-conditioning or hot oil treatment once a month does a great job for your hair. Promote circulation and oil production by massaging your scalp on a regular basis. Try to avoid frequent use of products with mineral oil or petroleum as they tend to block the pores. Always use a leave-in conditioner after washing your hair. Heat, especially when combined with perms, is very damaging to hair. Therefore, put as little heat as possible on your hair. Ensure that your diet contains sufficient protein and vitamins, which are essential for proper hair growth. Try to get nutritional supplements designed specifically for hair and skin health. Do not relax your hair until it is bone straight.
