Managing Yourself

How Globally Competitive are you?

T

here is no doubt that globalization has changed our landscape and the world is a much more connected and competitive environment than it once was. The rise of several multinational corporations, with offices around the globe, offers many employees the prospect of working overseas. In this 21st century business environment, it has become the norm for people to seek employment overseas or to be transferred to a company’s foreign office. However, the requirements for success in this globalized setting go above and beyond being smart and talented, as there are plenty of smart and talented executives and managers who fail spectacularly in expatriate roles. It is important to know what kind of person thrives on crosscultural complexity and whether your ambitions and personality fit this profile. Harvard Business Review conducted interviews with over 200 senior executives across the United States, Europe and Asia and a survey of more than 5000 managers worldwide and concluded that assigning an important overseas post to the wrong executive – one who doesn’t have the propensity to learn and succeed in a new and different environment – can be a painful and expensive undertaking. Several issues were raised, such as the factors behind their successes and failures, what was getting in the way of their progress in other cultures and the degree to which they enjoyed working with people who were different from them. They were also asked what they thought it took to be a global leader and an effective manager in a cross-cultural environment. It was then uncovered that success overseas is tied to what is called “the global mind-set”, which is developed in the early stages of an individual’s life. It can be improved upon later in life, but one has to determine where she stands in the first place. It contains three main components: intellectual capital, psychological capital and social capital. A leader who is strong in all three dimensions is considered to be an effective international leader.

What’sYour Body Shape?

how to determine your figure

I

t irks me whenever I see a woman in clothing that does not complement her body type. I know everyone likes to be in the latest trends, but not all trends fit all body types. Most women just don’t understand what pieces of clothing works well with their figures. Don’t let your mirror fool you – the better you understand your body type, the better you will be better able to dress. So, grab your tape measure and let’s start from top to bottom. Shoulders: With the help of friend, put the beginning of the tape at the tip of one shoulder then take it around until it comes back to the same shoulder. The tape should skim your shoulders to the point where it can slip off. This gives the shoulders’ widest circumference. Bust: While standing straight, wrap the measuring tape around your upper body from your back to the fullest part of your breasts. Pull tightly on to the tape but do allow enough room to rotate the measuring tape freely. This is to ensure that you do not pull too tightly and change the shape of your bust.

Waist: Wrap the measuring tape around your torso at the smallest part of your natural waist. It should wrap flat around your back, meeting just above your belly button.

Don’t let your mirror fool you – the better you understand your body type, the better you will be better able to dress. Hips: Starting at one hip, hold the measuring tape below your hip bone, at the fullest part of your hip. Ensuring that the tape is flat, wrap it around the largest part of your butt (no cheating!) and your other hip, bringing it back to the starting point. Once you have measured these areas, the numbers should help you understand your shape.

Rectangle Your shoulders, bust and hips are around the same size, with no defined waistline. Your shoulders, bust and hip measurements are within 5 percent of each other. Your waist is less than 25 percent smaller than your shoulder or bust measurements. For example, if your shoulders measure 36 inches, your waist will be 27 inches or more.

Oprah and Gayle: the blueprint for friendships by Tracey-Ann Wisdom

should be your loudest cheerleader and a source of good advice, a rock to lean on.

Oprah Winfrey (right) and Gayle King (left)

A

nybody who has paid attention to Oprah Winfrey’s life and career knows about Gayle King, her ‘BFF’ (best friend forever) and the woman she has described as “the mother I never had… the sister everybody would want… the friend that everybody deserves.” The women have been friends since their days at WJZ-TV in Baltimore. Oprah was the 6 o’ clock news anchor and Gayle the production assistant. Despite their opposite positions in the newsroom ‘hierarchy’ (and the whopping US$10,000 difference in their salaries!), they formed an inseparable bond that has lasted almost 35 years. What makes their friendship truly inspiring is the fact that despite the differences between them, they treat each other as equals and always have each other’s best interest at heart.

“Everybody needs a Gayle”

Everyone needs a best friend, that one person you can count on to be there through thick and thin, who will cry or laugh with you as the situation requires, who will always have your back. No two friendships are alike and people’s relationship needs differ, but there are several qualities your BFF should possess.

Trustworthiness is another key quality to look for. Can you share your secrets, fears and dreams with her and know you won’t hear the intimate details of your life from another person? Additionally, does your BFF make sacrifices for you? This doesn’t have to be as serious as giving you a kidney, but how about sitting through ‘The Princess and the Frog’ even though she HATES animated movies, just because it’s your birthday?

Have fun!

On a lighter note, your best friend should also be someone you can have fun with, whether it is shopping, getting your nails done or just chatting aimlessly on the phone. Of course, you should make sure you never take your BFF for granted and give as much to her as she gives to you. Every relationship is a two-way street and requires effort from both persons involved. If you are lucky enough to have a friend like Gayle, be sure to let her know how much she means to you today. advertisment

For starters, she should always be honest. Who else is going to tell you when you have food on your face, that your killer outfit isn’t quite hitting the mark or that your boyfriend is a loser and you most definitely can do better? Most people will sidestep the truth to spare your feelings, gain favour or simply because they really don’t care for you. However, she should always be respectful and never put you down with her words or actions. Your BFF also needs to be loyal. She needs to look out for you and have your back when you need support.
