Diaspora

Demographic diversity and assimilation define the borough of Queens as it is one of the most culturally diverse areas in the United States. The diaspora of people from all over the world has transformed Queens into an area where respite is a common factor for thousands of people. The assimilation of cultures for those native to the land of Queens and also for foreigners has enrich the culture of the urban fabric.

Gaiety Park

The incorporation of three programs that use water as their main stimulant create harmony to the mind, body, and spirit of individuals in the Florida Hospital. The aquatic therapy pool deals with the body portion of individuals, allowing them to restore physical strength. The sound of the cascade alleviates the mind by cancelling unwanted noise for those seeking to spend time on the reduced-size soccer fields. lastly, the outdoor yoga studio alludes the spirit to heal and assimilate itself by the reflection of water.

Communal Shelter

Pleasant Street Historic district had a strong walking culture that was mostly associated with door to door selling of handmade objects such as silverware and antique tools. These objects were the technology of the past. Our design utilizes and resembles a motherboard, a currenr piece of technology, as a mean to reconnect the community to its almost lost culture of integrating and sharing technology. The 5-story library is the core of the intervention as it integrates the old generation to the present generation of people through the utilization of technology.

Healing Landmark

Lake Nona is a medical city that attracts people from different regions in Florida, many of these people are temporary inhabitants that seek relief from a sojourn filled with difficulties and pain. Many others are local medical staff that live their lives trying to help and save others. The creation of a landmark for both temporary and permanent occupants is the main approach on this project. Having green communal areas inside and outside the tower would allude occupants to share unique experiences regardless of their time spent in the tower.

Solid Cloud

A week long experiment using two materials with opposite properties. Foam has the flexibility and porousness to create intricate lighting and forms. Differently, cement is a W which resembles heavieness and structure. The foam absorbs the cement mix which then sets inside the foam allowing it to remain in a specific shape.

Rural Retreat

The landscape of Florida is extremely diverse as it is Wekiva Springs State Park. Recognizing the terrain’s transforation over time allows for an affluent understanding of its scale and composition. The scars and burns of three trees define the history of their immediate surrounding on which the interventions sit.

The Scar

In 1930 started a discriminatory practice of fencing off areas where banks would avoid investments based on community demographics, specifically AfricanAmerican communities. The community of Paramore has suffered a detraction of worth and space due to the redlining practice. This practiced was abolished in the 1960s; however, today, more than 50 years later, the scars of redlining still segregate the paramore community. Introducing three interventions that utilize a horizontal structure as their main mean of circulation and public interaction breaks the idea of segregation and introduces the idea of unity.
