PROJECT TORO shophouse project cafe/living area

SITE CONTEXT The site itself has many nearby facilities that provides convenience to the area. Landmarks like Kallang Basin Swimming complex, Power Grid and The Infineon Building are located nearby as well. With lots of plantation at the site, it helps with the cooling the area and shading from too much sunlight. The traffic flow also suggest how people travel in and out with certain paths catered to different movements allowed.

BUILDING APPROACH

The buildings are grouped in a linear fashion. The block also has an oblique approach. The building also has a geometric form, with a linear structural system. Natural ventilation with the use of honeycomb brick walls allow heats to rise and escape. The wind path also shows how both levels get the ventilation it needs, both inwards and outwards.

DESIGN CONCEPT The Sushi Cafe Toro, translated as lantern from Japanese, Is a modernized Japanese Architecture that sells fusion sushi, infusing western influences into it’s recipe. The cafe Toro, is named after the visual hierarchy of the facade which is lit up like a lantern. Acting as a glass box that illuminates light, giving a sense of curiousity to how the space would look on the inside. The wooden strips also enhances the effect of the lantern, also suitable for Japanese theme introduced. The double volume concept creates a unique way of dining and visual effect on the place. Toro wants to stand out especially at night when its concept is able to be portrayed by the lit up facade, pulling itself away from the rest of the units.

The isometric view shows the entire space of the cafe. With its wooden and bamboo furnishing, it gives a warm and Japanese vibe to the area. While the pale yellow lighting complements the wood textures by enhancing its visual representation. The introduction of the stone concrete creates a contrast between the Asian and Western concept. The balance between the heavy concrete and light wooden textures create a harmonious effect thats suits the cafe theme of the infused sushi. Huge walls covers over parts of the cafe where only until you take a closer look you are able to see how the space actually functions. This causes curiosity to the space. An example would be the second level of the “lantern sitting area where you are only able to see how to go up after going behind the wooden facade wall. After taking down the walls, it shows how the space still transition smoothly from one place to another. The bedroom itself has also adopted the style and design of the cafe, while not taking away the comfort and functions of the living space. Sky light is also introduced into the space for a brighter and warmer concept during the day.

The ambience created for the space is mostly warm yellow lighting that complements the wooden aesthetics of the space. The level 1 and 2 dining area are specially custom made to follow the sitting style of the Japanese people. Where the sitting is the floor, being depressed in. While incooperating the concrete stone that brings a new feeling and vibe to the traditional sitting style. The bar area offers a bar-like concept but served sushi. Where customers get to sit around the preperation area and interact with the owner/ chef. The sitting arrangement against the wooden wall also caters to people who wants to dine alone. The stairway up to the level 2 dining area is also a walking gallery where paintings and artworks are placed on the huge wall on the side, while the bamboo strips create a repitition effect that complements the stairs, and for direction purposes as well. A door is also placed to define the eating area from the living space.

PROJECT HAVEN Housing Development Board Project Communal area

SITE CONTEXT

DISTRICT B

Kampong Chai Chee was the given location and the block chosen was a point block at Bedok North Avenue 2, Blk 417. The building approach is frontal, it leads directly to the entrance of the building along a straight path. In regards to its geometric shape, it is a single volume space in a rectangle shape. The center of the building (lift area) is also elevated. A lot of structural columns are also used to withstand the weight of the structure. With a evenly spreaded out columns to spread the load as well.

CONCEPT SKETCHES

CONCEPT

The concept that i used was using geometric shapes to create unique spaces. The reason was because of the hierarchy of the building where the lift area was elevated. The idea to articulate and complement the current shape, by creating elevated and depressed planes to form communal spaces where people are able to freely use the space. Therefore, concluding through making refuge and prospect spaces to create unique spaces within the void by elevating and depressing planes to create separate areas but not visually

DESIGN CONCEPT

Pocket Spaces through creating elevated and depressed planes Different form and shapes that gives innovation to the space How to create a communal space with interesting features and function without completely blocking them off from one another visually

DESIGN STRATEGY

SECTION VIEW

Using forms and materials to clearly define spaces from each other. Also making use of the actual site and building form to articulate with the spatial design.

From the section-cut views, it shows how the elevating and depressing of planes is thoughtfully planned out, with its minimal height raised and decreased, it does not affect people from excessive movements. But yet able to define spaces clearly and give the unique quality to the space.

sense of connection between the people using the space. CIRCULATION

The plan shows the four main spaces with the center being the core area of the block. With the wooden texture to clearly define the elevated planes while blending in the concrete of the actual site. The use of screeded and tinted concrete, both black and white for the furnitures then blends in to the raw finishes of the building. Terrazo tiles area also used for the outdoor spaces due to its durability.

With all the spaces having its own unique features, it does not have a main purpose. Which allows the people using the spaces to not be restricted to what they are supposed to do there. This will encourage the users to use its space to their own creativity and suiting their own need of the space at that point of time.

The circulation paths are also well thought out before executing where the paths the residents usually take are ensured it’s not blocked out. And so are the sheltered pathways. With every area still able to excess the lift area without any difficulty to ensure the accessibility to the lift be it through the ramp or stairs.

The overview of the project has always been trying to blend in the surrounding into the design, always considering how the place originally is. Knowing the void deck itself holds a very light tone and colour to it, my design only revolves around it to enhance its current aesthetics. All to also not take away what a void deck is, keeping its element and trademarks. The most important fact was to make the idea effective and possible, transforming housing develop-

ment board void decks into something more meaningful and functional. The front of the block would have the overhanging platform that creates the visual hierarchy of the space while the back would have the outdoor loft. The two main features sticking out of the blocks represents the design of refuge and prospect spaces.

OUTDOOR LOFT

The outdoor loft was created for a utmost relaxing area through a unique way of executing that. With the depressed area created, the outdoor loft consist of 2 areas. The slope and the steps. The slope is basically a angled plane that is articulated to the human ergonomics for a relaxing lying position. While the step was a creation of huge steps that acts

as spaces for cozy and warm places to be at sinked in area. This creates a new and unique environment that allows people to enjoy, not only the conventional tables and chairs that are available as well. With a controlled shelter, it also caters to rainy weather and of such. The design also ensured that it is not too deep for discomfort.
