ehran Book Center is an urban project aiming to enhance social interactions and cultural activities among city dwellers in an area with great potential. The site is a block in city center with a good reputation as the center of Tehran publishing industry. It contains various bookshops, publishing houses and commercial-cultural buildings. Additionally, being located in the vicinity of “University of Tehran” and “Enghelab square” as two landmarks in the city, the site has a high potential
for enhancing interactions, cultural activities and as a result, the vitality of the city. The potential is currently ignored, however. Having disharmonious and flashy facades, commercial buildings just seek capital. This approach causes the cultural features to be undermined. On the other hand, the old facades are worn and need facelift. Lack of green space, poor flooring, narrow pavements which are occupied by motorcycles and vendors, are some of the other major issues of the site.
Site Plan
Purpose:
• Creating a sociocultural urban space by dealing with issues, emphasizing on the line of bookshops, organizing the existing buildings and creating a public space far from the chaos of the region.
7
Plan
Policies:
• Linking publishers to people. • Dealing with current issues. • Showing site’s cultural and social potential. • Providing a tranquil area far from the chaos (The Book Garden). • Creating an inviting public space related to cultural-commercial buildings. • Promoting reading and book donation. • Providing public spaces to enhance social interactions in different scales.
8
Detail of the selected open space
Strategies: • • • • • • • • • •
Buildings’ renovation and reconstruction. Pavement’s reformation. Maintaining bookshops’ line. Open spaces to provide opportunities for pausing, interaction, reading and book donation. Event spaces in the center of the project, around the water to form communities Placing “The Book Garden” behind the buildings to avoid chaos. Balconies in the north with a view of the street and “University of Tehran”. Glass slabs in the south to enhance communication with “The Book Garden”. Water and plants to enhance tranquility. Promoting the urban furniture and street lighting.
9
The project contains private spots among a busy and dynamic environment. The designed open spaces have a strong connection with commercialcultural buildings. Open spaces also provide the opportunity of pausing, interaction, reading, book donation, various public activities and visiting the bookstores.

02. Valiasr Intersection as the Center of Tehran
Academic Project. Individual Landscape Design Studio 3 3rd semester of master program University of Tehran January 2018
V
aliasr intersection has been considered one of Tehran’s significant spaces since First Pahlavi era. Historical landmarks such as “the City Theater”, “Student Park”, “Institute of Arts and Culture” and so on are located in the region. As the intersection of two busy and vital streets (Valiasr St and Enghelab St.), the area also deals with a huge traffic congestion. Additionally, metro lines 1 and 2 and a pedestrian underpass cross the area, causing more both chaos and vitality. Valiasr intersection is also a multifunctional urban space. Various functions from cultural and historical buildings to computer markets in the north and southern clothing stores come together in this place.
According to the aforementioned, that’s why different people from different classes and lifestyles pass through this area, providing the opportunity of social interactions among city dwellers. There is no doubt that Valiasr intersection has the potential of becoming a vital public space for all citizens and being the center of Tehran.
11
Concept
For achieving this goal, it is essential to have a pedestrian-friendly approach, leading to less traffic congestion and more vitality, walkability and interactions. Thus, part of Valiasr St. go underground occupying the previous pedestrian underpass and the pedestrians move to the ground to have more connection with the

intersection and buildings. Circular public spaces have been added to form social interactions, the biggest one interacts with the Cultural Center of “the City Theater” and “Enghelab Street”. Routes to landmarks and subway entrances are marked with brick arches and colorful pavements to guide people.

alehzar is one of the historical streets located in city center of Tehran, Iran. Containing many restaurants, cinemas and theaters, it was the symbol of modernism and art of Iran in Qajar and Pahlavi era. However, during the recent decades, most cultural centers have been ignored and replaced by stores and electrical shops. This project aims to find dominant and valuable features of the facades by observing and analyzing, and provide a guideline to enhance the street by
conservation, renovation and reconstruction. The guideline is written for designers, authorities, owners and all beneficiary of the buildings. The project has three main steps: • Recognition (Architectural styles, colors, materials and levels). • Finding typologies • Providing the guideline

eighborhood book center aims to provide a cultural complex for reading and recreational activities. The site is located in a residential area in Shahrak-e Gharb district, Tehran, Iran. It has a North-South slop and it is accessible from three different directions (Piroozan Street in the north, North Piroozan St. in the east and Hormozan St. in the west). The project consists of two main parts (two buildings which are located in two different levels and separate children part from adults) that are connected by a bridge and create a Z-shaped form. A wall following the same pattern is located on the opposite axis.
In order to provide light for reading and study, most windows are located in the northern and southern part. The structural system is concrete beam and column with using waffle slabs for spans greater than 20 feet. Occupying a considerable part of the project, open spaces play a major role in shaping social interactions and recreational activities. he project is located in the neighborhood of “Harandi Park, a deprived area in Tehran with different social and economic problems. Belonging to the lower class of society, current houses are broken-down with poor structure and worn facades. Occupied by drug-users, the park and other public spaces suffer from the lack of security, causing high crime rate in the region. The project aims to stave off the gravity of current condition by designing a residential complex for the lower class in the region. It consists of four main blocks including eights types of unites with different sizes and shapes, balconies and piloties.
The buildings have been surrounded by green spaces providing a tranquil atmosphere and various public spaces, enhancing communications and leisure activities. Furthermore, a main public space with recreational facilities have been placed in the center of the project to increase the social interactions in a safe area monitored by buildings. It is accessible by all blocks.
