DYAR AL-HARAM

LOCATION: Masar, Makkah, Saudi Arabia

AREA: 5,350 m²

AFRINA Construction and Urban Development

As one of the first towers that started construction in the Masar Project, it was critical to ensure delivery within the highest standards and quality. For that reason many design revisions and and proposals were made to reach the best results. One of the main changes were increasing sellable areas by maximizing the design efficiency, and adding more commercial and rented spaces.

The main concept was to make the commercial entrance and the elevation layout more appealing and attractive from the main street, with the natural sunlight reaching inside te podium via the skylights in the atrium connecting the floors. Plus adding outdoor areas with landscape serving both the residents and mall users.

Changing and improving on the strcutural system enhanced many different elements in the building. Such as refining the residential apartments, more compact and efficient core design, and revamping the parking floors design to accomodate more parking lots with smoother traffic.

Making the parking floors more efficient gave us the opprotunities to make use of the free floors provided by the Amanah regulations such as the multi-purpose halls, all day dining and some recreational and service areas.

Original Design Proposal

One of the challenges was working with a slightly inclined sidewalk along the main road. Instead of adding an extra platform between the shops and the sidewalk we seperated the stores on the front from the indoor mall, and alligning them with

The orignal design had extra stairs and ramps connecting the sidewalk to the stores

AL-JIWAR VILLA COMPLEX

LOCATION: Medina, Saudi Arabia

AREA: 10,000 m² / 176 m² Unit

AFRINA Construction and Urban Development

One of the main selling points of this project is approaching the design with more traditional building methods and styles, not only making it more sustainable but a unique living experience both on the urban development and unit designs. The use of local materials and building methods were the focus in the design and build process.

Project Concept

Designing the project with the traditional materials and elements with mind to create a unique urban layout that focuses on pedestrians and landscape distribution withen the residential units.

And to encourage walking and to enhance the experience most unit parking lots are collected in specific spaces.

The pedestrian pathways are shaded with archs and extrutions. And using mashrabias and green covered pergolas to showcase the traditional characteristics.

Comparison between the traditional local villa designs vs using an indoor courtyard and maximizing the floor plan efficiency around it.

Private Views

More privacy for outdoor spaces and between neighbors

The building surrounds the outdoor space and protects it from noise and bustle, and also prevents sound from reaching the neighbors

Landscape

Collecting the external spaces into one large space creates an opportunity to create an environment that contains natural views and open space that can be used to a greater

The Unit Design

The general style of the unit design focuses around the courtyard that services all spaces in the house. With the feeling of calmness and nature surrounding all the areas, from landscape and greenery in outdoor spaces to earthy materials in the interior. With the total built-up-area of 260 m2.

Using windcatchers on the rooftop to provide natural air to the rooms that are not overlooking the courtyard, and with the added indoor waterfall allowing cool air to circulate indoors.

LUXURY APARTMENTS COMPLEX

LOCATION: Medina, Saudi Arabia

AREA: 10,000 m²

AFRINA Construction and Urban Development

The project comprises four buildings seamlessly connected to form a single housing complex. Each building has dedicated parking spaces and individual entrances, offering residents a convenient and independent living experience. Further catering to diverse needs, the complex showcases a variety of apartment unit sizes, ensuring perfect matches for a wide range of clients.

GroundFloor plan showing the different entrances with the communal outdoor space in the middle.

The goal of this project was to make a unique living experience by providing many essensial and luxurious amenities and make it rich in landscape and outdoor spaces.

The elevation design focused on privacy and energy efficiency. By using angled windows to break eyesight from neighbors and deflects direct sunlight better, leading to better energy consumption from cooling and heating indoor air.

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS

Program Diagram

The main experience we want to deliver is a cohesive connection between indoor and outdoor functions. And also have functions that the residents of the neighbourhood need, while at the same time being a city attraction.

Design Process

It is important to have good flow and connection with the residential side of the project and also withen the project area. That also provides good natural air ventilation.

Divided the site into 3 sections Connected the corners and center lines

Located the entrances and connected the dots Connecting all the dots together

Isometric

Having the residential areas with a modular design, we wanted to contast that style with giving each building a unique form and cluster.

The Idea

The Village concept has exceptional potential, able to accommodate a very large clientele. This architectural complex goes against the traditional pattern and creates a cluster of elements, bringing about impressive visual impact. With indoor and outdoor spaces mixing together make a new kind of experience that provide a fresh and healthy environment. And the concept of rich green areas of merging nature and human scale, weaves its way into the daily life of city dwellers

Flexibility

The modular system will be shown in a frame structure and it will provide us flexibility which can happen in the change of uses later on or heights, widths, and lenght from one another and this method will be applied on both closed spaces and open spaces. The project program houses multi-purpose uses such as restaurants, coffee shops, retail shops, green spaces, and open spaces.

ENERGY EFFICIENT HIGH-RISE BUILDING

LOCATION: Sydney, Australia

AREA: 3000 m²

STUDIO: Graduation-408

SUPERVISOR: Dr-Ing. Mohannad Bayoumi / Eng. Abdulrahim Alim

Worldwide energy demand has increases extraodinarily since the industrial revolution, particulary after the realization of the exploitative benefits of electricity. The recources and emissions implications of the rapidly expanding use of energy have been ignored for three quarters of a century.

Today buildings worldwide account for up to 40% of total end-use energy. Building heating and cooling are the most energy-intensive activities, followed by electricity use for lighting and applications.

Sydney’s Climate

The climate of sydney is humid subtropical, shifting from mild and cool in winter to warm and hot in the summer. Wind direction is different from each season. But the main focus is summer winds and spring is similar to that. Subtropical climate passive cooling strategies maximises the efficiency of the building envelope by minimising heat gain and assisting heat loss to the natural sources of cooling such as air movement and cooling breezes.

Psychrometric Chart

Psychrometric chart shows air properties such as dry bulb temperature and relative humidity among other things, And shows where each day of the year is.

On the left it shows the days within the comfort zone range. And on the right the days that set within the comfort zone expands if passive cooling strategies are used.

Floor Plans

The core is located on the south of the building to provide an atrium in the middle for natural ventilation using stack ventilation method, and provide maximum view areas in the plan.

Facade Design

Parametric shading system has been made with Rhino’s Grasshopper and can be used automatically depending on the sun angle and different seasons. And the energy consumption was simulated using IDA with and without the shading devices.

KAU GREEN SPINE

LOCATION: King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

AREA: 18,820 m² LENGTH: 420 m

STUDIO: Urban Design-407

SUPERVISOR: Dr. Rahif Maddah

Based on the existing action plan from the university to activate the academic field, as well as the lack of link between the field and the university’s faculty members housing, where the areas are not fully activated and the absense of an urban area adjacent to the academic feild with the lack of activities, it was found after doing some studies; a good opportunity to make a urban walkway project linking academic feild with the housing aims to activate the proposed university plan to link them together.

Design Strategies

Functions

The main functions on the path were selected through a survey that has been done by the users in the area and in KAU in general.

420m

The idea of the project is also based on creating a dynamic area within the campus that attracts users and encourages them to practice activities and hobies.

Pedestrian path 2.40-3.40m Bicycle path 1.80-2.00m Activites zone 4.40-6.00m Vegetation zone 1.80-3.60m

The circle is considered one of the most complete and balanced forms, it is not only that it expresses granting the same degree of concentration in terms of containment, but it also gives harmony to all the elements that it contains.

THANK YOU

Analysis

The allocation of the functions depended on the users of each area and the noise and privacy that each area needed.

Privacy Analysis Along the Path

-Noise Analysis

Each activity`s noise has been recorded and then distributed on the path from low to high. Then different strategies were implemented to reduce the noise.
