Welcome Brethren! I am very excited to be a member of the First Masonic District and our Fraternity. I often wonder what I would do without it. One thing for sure, I would have missed the opportunity to meet all of you. The Fraternity offers us many different avenues to pursue from the time that we are raised. There is something for everyone depending on your interests. No matter what those interests are; they start with fellowship and getting to know one another. I have learned more about myself, life, and the Fraternity from great men that I look forward to seeing each month, the Brethren. I hope that you also find being with our Brethren rewarding and exciting.

Keep working together with pride and honesty and there is nothing that can stop this Fraternity from being the best organization in the world. I truly believe that this world needs our Fraternity now more than ever. If we all lived and looked at life through the values it teaches us, how much different would this world be?

Getting the Most from Freemasonry NEW AND SEASONED MEMBERS SHOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE VARIOUS PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE FIRST MASONIC DISTRICT

Are you new to Freemasonry or a member that is looking to get the most out of your membership? The old saying, “you get out of it, what you put into”, is a powerful statement and one you will find to have a deeper meaning when to truly get involved in Freemasonry. But you might be wondering, where do I start? The answer to this question is simple, and one that should be fairly straight-forward; your Lodge. If you recall, in the first degree we are taught the lessons of, “Ask” and “Knock”, and the opportunities that were open unto us when we sought admission into the fraternity. If you’d like to get involved in your lodge, ask an Officer how you can contribute. You may have a specific skill or talent the lodge can use both inside the lodge room during a meeting, or perhaps a skill or talent that can be used for a task outside of the lodge. If asking does not yield the results you are looking for, knock at the doors of a neighboring lodge, or masonic friends you may have that might be able to point you in the right direction.

6

to do is ask questions or knock on doors so to speak, and those doors of opportunity will be thrown wide open to receive you. I would encourage you to read through this newsletter, the First Masonic District is an exciting place to be. Become an informed member about YOUR district and don’t be afraid to ask what YOU can do to get involved. If getting involved in the lodge isn’t up your alley, but learning more about fraternity and it’s rich history, piques your interest - I would suggest exploring The Academy of Masonic Knowledge. This is a FREE program for you to get involved and educate yourself on the craft. I can’t tell you how rewarding this program has been for me over the last 5 years, I would recommend it to anyone. Ask your Lodge mentor how you can get involved in the Academy. Maybe you’re looking for a social club, or a group that raises money for a specific charity - chances are we have a match, you just have to ask. In Freemasonry, you have to take initiative to get involved, the first step beings with you. All you have

As a Past Master of Lodge No. 43, I have come to understand that the greatest gift of Freemasonry isn’t the individual or a single lodge, but rather the combination of individuals and lodges who make up this great fraternity. Remember Brethren, we are all in this together, it’s not about one lodge or one individual doing well, but rather the entire district working as one to promote what Freemasonry has to offer - after all, you get out of it, what you put into it. If you’d like to find out how to get involved, feel free to contact me and ASK all the questions you want. L. Kenneth Bray III, PM www.AssembletheCraft.com

Detailing for Dyslexia BROTHER BARRY E. THEAL, PM SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE GROWING UP WITH DYSLEXIA AND WHAT HE HAS DONE TO HELP RAISE MONEY FOR THE CONTINUED SUCCESS OF OUR YOUTH

Growing up I understood the struggles of learning disabilities. As a youth I struggled with understanding what I was reading. It wasn’t until middle school when a teacher helped me understand that I had a disability. This disability was discovered to be Dyslexia. Dyslexia is a lifelong condition that makes it difficult for people to read. It’s the most common learning issue, although it’s not clear what percentage of kids have it. Some experts believe the number is between 5 and 10 percent. Others say as many as 17 percent of people show signs of reading issues. The reason for the wide range is that experts may define dyslexia in different ways. Dyslexia is mainly a problem with reading accurately and fluently. Kids with dyslexia may have trouble answering questions about something they’ve read. But when it’s read to them, they may have no difficulty at all. In 2018 Detailing For Dyslexia raised 1500 for The Lancaster Dyslexia Center through a weekend of automotive detailers coming together to share their knowledge and passion for their trade.

In November of 2018, I began to make plans to focus on a larger scale event with guest speakers. Inviting out friends Renny Doyle who is world renowned as detail mentor, trainer, author, and The Detailer of Air Force One. Keynote speaker Renny Doyle along with Billy Baugus owner of American Detailer Garage agreed to donate their time for the cause, help raise money for The Lancaster Dyslexia Center. Our goal this year is to raise over $10,000 dollars. The event is to be held: AUGUST 10, 2019 9 AM to 4:30 PM 161 Museum Drive Hershey, PA 17033 www.detailingfordyslexia.com If you’d like to make a donation to this worthy cause, please visit the website and click the registration tab where you can follow the links to donate. District Deputy Grand Master’s April Address BROTHER RONALD B. CARSON, DDGM OF THE FIRST MASONIC DISTRICT SHARES HIS INSIGHT AND MESSAGE FOR THE UPCOMING MONTH AND BEYOND

It has been great to see you at Lodge and the other activities over the past month. The Blue Lodge meetings during March have been exciting and well planned. For those of you who missed the Charles M. Howell Lodge, No. 496 Official Visit missed a very unique and fun evening. The Irish dinner; bagpipes during Lodge, played by Brother James Diener from Ephrata Lodge, No. 665; having a dispensation to allow the Worshipful Master, Jonathan Welsh, PM to change his normal attire from a tuxedo to a kilt; and a great evening of fellowship all came together for a wonderful evening. The Academy of Masonic Knowledge had great presentations that gave all of us a lot to think about. So that you do not miss out on future events with our Brothers, please look at the links provided in this Newsletter. Also, visit our Facebook page, for more details about what is going on in our District and Fraternity. Some links will also send you to our website, www.FirstMasonic.org Last year our District was very successful in raising money for the DeMolay, Jobs Daughters, and the Squires program. I would like 8

to extend a sincere appreciation for everyone’s contributions to meet all of our goals. This year with the money that we raise we will be sending 4 young men/ women (ages 12 to 16) to the Life Skills course at Patton Campus. They must be a son, daughter, or grandchild of a member of one of our Blue Lodges or Eastern Star. Please contact your Worshipful Master for details.

Please stay tuned for more information from the District Deputy Grand Master, the schedule of his Official Visitations for the month of May can be located in the back of this Magazine.

The Empty Chair Ceremony comes to A.C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 BROTHER CHRISTOPHER GIBSON, PM WASHINGTON LODGE NO. 156 WILL BE PERFORMING THE EMPTY CHAIR CEREMONY AT A.C. TREICHLER LODGE NO. 682’S STATED MEETING

Image: Web In an upcoming Stated Meeting of Treichler Lodge No. 682 Brother Christopher Gibson, PM of Washington Lodge No. 156 will be performing the “Empty Chair Ceremony”. If you have not seen Brother Chris perform this beautiful ceremony, we suggest you plan on attending the Stated Meeting held May 20th, 2019 at 7:00 PM. What is the “Empty Chair Ceremony” you might be asking? Traditionally the ceremony dates back to around 1875, at the close of the American Civil War and was meant for Masonic lodge to pay tribute to its members that did not return from the war. The ceremony is known as “The Empty Chair” or “Vacant Chair” ceremony and is conducted with beautiful solemnity. Since then the ceremony has been modified slightly and used by some lodges on Remembrance Day, 10

paying homage to Brother Masons who fell during WWI, WWII, or any other wars. Some lodges have adopted this ceremony to honor not only its veterans of war who have since passed, but also to honor the memory of deceased Past Masters, Members of Distinction, and Members who have since passed. In some forms of the ceremony it is conducted by the Master, Wardens, and Chaplain and remains one of the most honorable and memorable ways to have honored our deceased Brethren. Following the program, Brother Robert Martin, PM will be providing the Masonic Education on “The Staircase Lecture”. Meeting: Monday, May 20th, 2019 at 7:00 PM Abraham C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 77 Freemason Drive Elizabethtown, PA 17022

Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation OUR MASONIC YOUTH GROUPS ENSURE THE SUCCESS AND WELLNESS OF OUR FRATERNITY AND CONTINUE THE TRADITIONS OF THE CRAFT FOR GENERATIONS TO COME

Job’s Daughters is an organization created to unite girls and train leaders. Job’s Daughters enables young ladies between 10 and 20 to learn leadership skills, organizational methods, and the importance of fulfilling individual responsibilities within a group. By planning their own activities the members have fun doing what they want to do and at the same time creating life lasting friendships. Over the Easter Holiday Bethel No. 15 of Job’s Daughters gathered at Masonic Villages in Elizabethtown to assist in the Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Jobies helped “hide” Easter Eggs in various spaces on the grounds of Masonic Villages where hundreds to young and eager children came to hunt eggs, win prizes, and meet the Easter Bunny! All-in-all the event was a huge success, many thanks to the Masonic Villages for hosting this event, as well as all of the people involved to make this possible. 11
