“Cárdenas belongs to a group of kindred spirits who during the 20th century have made sculptures an intellectual activity, “a mental thing” according to Leonardo’s principles, but without cutting off contact with beauty, beauty that discovered its fundamental truth in the primitive art of Africa, native America and the Pacific. Thus the true peers of Cárdenas are Brancusi, Arp and Henry Moore…” José Pierre, Paris, 13 September 1988

Fine Art Auctions Miami (FAAM) is honored to present the first curated auction dedicated to a private collection of drawings and sculptures of famed Cuban sculptor, Agustín Cárdenas. This season we have decided to start our week of Art Basel sales by paying homage to one of the major figures of modern sculpture. The following exhibition examines the early stages of the artist’s career with his first studies in Fine Art while he was still a scholar in Cuba, all the way to his middle-age modernist and avant-garde style sculptures, which were influenced by the work of Constantine Brancusi, Hans Arp and Henry Moore. This unique Collection of early drawings, sculptures, photographs and archives, built over time by the artist’s sister in law in Cuba, was acquired by the present collector after Cárdenas’ death. The visitor will be able to experience the artist’s creative process by taking a look at figurative sketches that later influenced the artist’s first abstract sculptures carved before leaving for Paris in 1955. The letters and correspondences his family preserved show the emotional attachment between the artist and his relatives while he was abroad and his desire to return to his motherland to spend the remainder of his life. Harmony, voluptuous curves, femininity and sensuality are dominant themes present in the artist’s works. The drawings and sculptures in this curated auction are full of intimacy and vitality. We hope that this collection reflects the importance that is due to Agustín Cárdenas in the history of art. We hope you enjoy the exhibit.

Cárdenas was born on April 10, 1927 in Matanzas, Cuba, a city on the island’s Western coast. Son of a tailor, Cárdenas was exposed to the human form from an early age, and the proportions he learned are evident in his work as an artist. Cárdenas’ father quickly recognized his son’s artistic ability and supported him through his Fine Art studies at the “Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro” from 1943 to 1949 under the supervision of mentor Juan José Sicre – a former student of Antoine Bourdelle. During his years at the Fine Art Academy, Cárdenas was chosen by Sicre to assist him in his academic endeavors. Sicre always encouraged his creativity and talent throughout his studies and greatly influenced his artistic growth. It is interesting to notice the physique of the young Agustín around 1945, at the age of 18; he was an accomplished athlete1 and his passion for sports had an impact in his artistic research. He studied the Ancient Greek and Roman sculpture’s torsos and busts as well as the representation of the body in the 30s, which is how Cárdenas developed his Classical style. His sketches and drawings depicting athletes and the male figure (p.23-27) often highlight their beauty, importance, or a heroic quality. 1

“A work must have first of all a vitality of its own… independent of the object represented” Henry Moore, 1934 “Mother and Child” has been a beloved theme in Cárdenas’ career. His first drawings and sketches show stout, plump and curvaceous women. José Pierre believes that Cárdenas’ sculptures are representative of men’s ideal of female beauty in Cuba at the time.2 Wood was Cárdenas’ medium of choice to carve sensual, lyrical forms that depict the maternity theme (p. 34-49; 132-133). In each piece, he always made a point to highlight femininity and maternal warmth. Most of the sculptures on display are accompanied by the artist’s preliminary sketches and drawings, revealing the various stages of Cárdenas’ artistic process that started with a figurative and classical drawing, but culminated with abstract sculptures, both representing the same scene. 2

(José Pierre, La Sculpture de Cárdenas, 1971, p. 131).

In 1952, Agustin Cárdenas began to explore the use of two colors in his sculptures. As illustrated in the sculpture shown here, the artist applies white paint to create a contrast with the dark wood. The use of black and white reflects the artist’s choice to later carve marble instead of wood. These two opposite materials are respectively noble and humble, but more importantly, they are the essence “of a desire for synthesis between 4 the maternal principle (stone) and the paternal principle (wood)”. 4

“In his hands the wood ‘sings’ as it rarely has had the opportunity of doing….” José Pierre

The arrival of Cárdenas in Paris, Christmas day of 1955, marked a moment that would alter the course of his entire life. At the age of 28 he encountered André Breton, who, a year later, invited Cárdenas to participate in his first Parisian exhibition at Galerie L’Etoile Scellée. The exposure Cárdenas received from this show brought him international recognition among surrealist artists and the Parisian art scene. During the years he spent in Paris, Cárdenas sought to deconstruct the human form by carving sculptures that are fluid, play with negative space and, while static, appear to move. In the decade that followed, Cárdenas participated in approximately 100 group and 34 solo exhibitions, including Suzanne de Coninck and the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture. In 1957, and 1961, he took part in the Realités Nouvelles exhibition and in the International Surrealist exhibition at Daniel Cordier Gallery, organized by André Breton and Marcel Duchamp. He was awarded both Chevalier of Arts and Letters medal and the Bill and Noma Copley Prize. From 1968 to the early 1990’s, he lived and worked in the Parisian suburbs of MeudonBellevue and Nogent-sur-Marne. Within this timeframe he was also inspired by his trips to Canada, Austria, Israel, Japan, Korea and especially Italy. He spent each summer in Tuscany - in Carrara where he sculpted marble and in the medieval city of Pietrasanta where he carved the bronze in foundries. In 1994, he returned to Cuba and lived in Havana until his death in 2001.

“[In Paris] I discovered what a man is… what African culture is… what it is to be a Negro.” Agustín Cárdenas, La Gaceta de Cuba, 1967

“Here, sprung from his fingers, is the great flowering totem which, more efficiently than the saxophone, arches the back of beautiful women.” André Breton, Exhibition Preface at gallery La Cour d’Ingres Paris, February 27, 1959

From the beginning of his artistic career, Agustín Cárdenas established his own creative rhythm, whereby he invented organic and sensual sculptures. After he left Cuba, he explored Surrealist tendencies, African spirituality and rituals, which led to his artistic development toward abstract forms, influenced by the European environment. While in Paris, Cárdenas discovered, due to his Afro-Cuban roots, a culture he always felt tied to spiritually. In 1957, he carved the first of many wooden sculptures inspired by elongated African totems, which reflected his temper: humble and perfectly quiet in nature 3. His works glorified the material he used – wood – as well as its smell and texture. The artist’s eternal quest was to find the balance between his early circular forms and those of his later works, depicting the ascension between heaven and earth. 3
