Right for ea each age Throughout our lives, our bodies and minds are changing. Life is a dynamic process with demands that must be met in order to achieve further development. In other words, life is about learning. In this learning process, increasingly differentiated mental structures are trained. Each phase of life stands for more or less characteristic effects of development. In the learning processes of the first year of life, however, our personality develops particularly rapidly and is additionally characterized at an elementary level. If we know at what age children will be faced with what development tasks, we can support them with corresponding games and materials in an enthusiastic learning process.

At this age they want to know everything and don’t miss any opportunity to discover something new. Children between three and five years old live in the here and now, have either all the time in the world or want to find out something right now. At this age, children are establishing their little world. At the same time they are developing their social skills such as communication and empathy with others. They learn as they play, and their motor skills become more varied.

Off to s ool! Children now want to know everything. They are proud of their new academic knowledge, and want to share and apply it. School is the beginning of a significant stage of development, as the new requirements, such as learning to write or being a member of a group, provide important incentives for personal development. Nosey Parkers and sma Alecs “Mum, how big was the Tyrannosaurus Rex? Why doesn’t the sun fall on the earth?” At this stage children want to know all the facts. They start by becoming interested in a particular subject and wanting to find out everything about it. The development of the child’s drawing is completed in this age group and at about 11 years of age the transition to adolescence begins.

Incey-wincey Incey-wincey spider … spider Growing up

At nursery school, children learn different forms of communication and experience many new situations and feelings. They learn to deal with conflicts, to play with one another, to paint, to have tantrums and to empathize with others. At pre-school age, children experience the first physical development. During this growth spurt, the proportions of the body change. The motor skills, especially gripping, are more clearly differentiated. Early experiments with colour pens and wax crayons: typical scribbles are created.

“Faces with arms and legs” are the first representations of people.

Storekeeper and Co. Almost from the very start, children play first by moving and adapting their bodies and then objects. Then they examine objects to find out their function and start creating things. During this time, painting and drawing are among the most important educational pastimes. Between the second and fifth years of age, children imitate whatever they experience and whatever moves them. From about the age of three, role play becomes more significant. Children play together in groups – mother, father, child. In doing so they learn to obey the first simple rules.

Drawing is one of the most important means of expression for every child. Inner experiences become visible.

The emotional world of ildren´s drawings Towards the end of their third year, children start drawing their first pictures of people. Previously to that, in the “scribbling phase”(from the first year onwards), they have discovered that you can leave a mark with a pen. The first people drawn by children will probably have no body. It is typical during this phase of development that the arms and legs are drawn directly onto a circular shape – usually containing a face. At this stage the first animals, houses and trees are also being drawn. During the fourth year, the “pre-planned” stage begins, i.e. the objects on the paper are presented in an ordered arrangement and with greater detail. Children like their drawn images to resemble the real thing. The picture elements are positioned in relationship with one another – while action and narrative structures are created. From the age of four, the phase of “mature work” begins. The child’s drawings are used more consciously for communication – the structure and objects express a mood for example. Picture designs and graphical interpretations of persons and objects are based on the individual experiences of the child.

O to s ool!

One big step

Moving events are recorded not only in the drawing, but also in words or short texts.

Daddy sees the awning on the house at eye level – proportions are often unrealistic, but instead reveal something about the importance of the objects or people represented.

Practice makes perfect Starting school is a great adventure for every child. They are proud to be schoolchildren at last. Reading, writing and arithmetic are waiting to be learned and a new environment to be discovered. Children start to focus on organising themselves into groups. This development is of great significance in establishing their self-image. Playing with rules Whereas role-play still dominates at six years of age, it soon afterwards becomes less important. Children can now understand rules and act accordingly – the basis for more sophisticated playing with rules. Here they learn in the game, how to pursue a goal tenaciously and to find their place within a group.

6+ Grandma is the greatest Drawing now reaches the schematic phase and children integrate their own knowledge into the images. For example, a house can be viewed from outside, yet still reveal a glimpse of the interior. In most cases proportions are not represented realistically – they are an indicator of importance. Also typical for this phase is that images of people are given details, such as glasses, so that individuals can be recognised and distinguished from one another. Learning to write through play Most children start learning to write before starting school. They “sign their pictures with large letters or they imitate writing movements as they comment out loud. The interest in writing has long been aroused and can be encouraged before school with stimuli appropriate to the age of the child. The three-fingered grip facilitates detailed drawing and writing movements. The middle finger supports the pen, while the index finger and thumb guide the movements. The lower arm and hand should be resting on the table. This ensures gentle and even writing movements.

Into motion The initially rough motor-movements of the child are gradually refined during the first few years of life. The development progresses by means of movements from the arm, then from the whole hand and finally detailed movements of the fingers in the three-fingered grip.

6+ The FABER-CASTELL mechanical pencil boasts the best properties for the first writing exercises. It has a soft, non-slip surface. The ergonomic triangular profile is specially designed for children’s fingers: Three large gripping surfaces ensure an even distribution of pressure and reduce the stress on the middle finger on which the pen rests. A simple rotating mechanism means that the lead does not have to be sharpened.

Extra thick pencil lead (1.4 mm) for early writing exercises Thumb and index finger are placed on the two rings. Ergonomically designed shaft encourages the three-fingered grip

Nosey Parkers and Sma Alecs.

When painting and drawing, it is now important that everything is the right colour and size. It is now important that the painting and drawing materials match the differentiated motor skills of the child.

S mp collecting, judo, ble tennis At school at this age the foundations of cultural skills have now been learnt with reading, writing and arithmetic and social concepts have been taken on board. At this age children are developing an ever greater interest for individual fields of knowledge or types of sport. Leisure time with others of the same age is becoming more important, social skills are improving – the diminishing bond with the parental home is becoming apparent. Between the ages of 9 and 12 the second growth spurt takes place – the childish figure appears to lose its proportions. On the quest for new adventures Even in play behaviour a growing, occasionally dangerous, cognitive interest for certain objects and subjects can be observed. The rules of play become more complex, creating excitement and challenge again and again, complicated investigations with experimental construction kits can bring beads of anxious sweat to the brows of the parents. As before, children still enjoy letting off steam in action games, which provides a good and important contrast to the school day. At this age perhaps a child will discover a love for a particular type of sport.

8+

New painting and drawing techniques are tried out, opportunities for expression are extended.

Precision in painting and drawing Children’s drawings now reach the second phase of schematic design. Typical of this last phase of development is that the pictures become richer in detail and closer to reality. The child draws less schematically and emphasises real differences in the picture, for example between grandmother and grandfather. A person can now appear tall and thin, while another is short and fat and wears a hat. Towards the end of this phase, the love of detail can peak in extremely formal representations such as outlines. Relationships in size are considered to an ever greater extent. From the age of 9 an attempt is made to present three-dimensionality in the picture. For example, a path can wend its way towards the horizon appearing smaller and narrower in the distance. Exaggeration, caricature and irony are all characteristic of this phase.
