A Long Way from Home Peter Carey Irene Bobs loves fast driving. Her husband is the best car salesman in rural South Eastern Australia. Together with Willie, their lanky navigator, they embark upon the Redex Trial, a brutal race around the continent, over roads no car will ever quite survive. A Long Way from Home is Peter Carey’s late style masterpiece; a thrilling high-speed story that starts in one way, then takes you to another place altogether. Set in the 1950s and painting a picture of the age of Empire – of kings and queens and their subjects, black and white – this brilliantly vivid novel illustrates the strands of an ancient culture spiralling through history, and the love made and hurt caused along the way. ‘Carey is an extraordinarily clever, able writer. He is one the writers, personally speaking, that I feel most pleased to be alive at the same time as . . . like being alive at the time Dickens was writing.’ Andrew Motion

PETER CAREY received the Booker Prize for Oscar and Lucinda and again for True History of the Kelly Gang. He has won the Commonwealth Writers Prize and the Miles Franklin Literary Award three times. He was born in Australia and lives in New York.

The Fountain in the Forest Tony White

The Last Ballad Wiley Cash

Distant revolutions echo through time in this Oulipoinspired novel about the moment when Thatcher’s militia fatally wounded the British political counter-culture. When a man is found hanging in a theatre, Detective Sergeant Rex King becomes obsessed with the case. Who is this anonymous corpse, and why has he been ritually mutilated?

Ella May Wiggins has a hard life. Her husband has run off again, and she must keep her four young children alive with the only work she can find, the night shift at American Mill No. 2 in Bessemer City, North Carolina.

But as Rex explores the crime scene further, the mystery deepens, and he finds himself confronting his own secret history instead. Shifting between Holborn Police Station, an abandoned village in rural 1980s France, and Stonehenge’s Battle of the Beanfield, The Fountain in the Forest transforms the traditional crime narrative into a dizzyingly unique fusion of avant-garde linguistic experiment, thrilling police procedural, and bildungsroman. ‘Rejecting familiar influences of the past twenty years, White joins a handful of contemporary writers who are proving that the novel has never been more alive. He is a serious, engaging voice of the modern city.’ Michael Moorcock, Guardian 4

When union leaflets start to circulate, Ella May begins to hope for a better life. But the mill owners, backed by other nefarious forces, will use every means in their power – including bloodshed – to maintain their control.

WILEY CASH is the prize-winning and New York Times bestselling author of A Land More Kind Than Home and This Dark Road to Mercy. He and his wife live in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Seventy-five years later, Ella May’s daughter Lilly, now an elderly woman, tells her nephew about his grandmother’s remarkable story. From the prize-winning, New York Times bestselling Wiley Cash, The Last Ballad is lyrical, heartbreaking and haunting, and the novel which confirms his place among America’s finest writers today. ‘A gorgeous, gut-wrenching novel.’ Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk

Lullaby LeÏla Slimani

Don’t Skip Out on Me Willy Vlautin

The baby is dead. It only took a few seconds.

Meet Horace Hopper, a twenty-one-year-old farm hand in Tonopah, Nevada, who works for Mr Reece and his wife, the nearest thing he’s had to family in years.

Translated by Sam Taylor

When Myriam, a French-Moroccan lawyer, decides to return to work after having children, she and her husband look for the perfect caretaker for their two young children. They never dreamed they would find Louise: a quiet, polite and devoted woman who sings to their children, cleans the family’s chic apartment in Paris’s upscale tenth arrondissement, stays late without complaint and hosts enviable birthday parties. The couple and nanny become more dependent on each other. But as jealousy, resentment and suspicions increase, Myriam and Paul’s idyllic tableau is shattered. Lullaby, a number-one bestseller in France and winner of its most prestigious prize, the Prix Goncourt, is a compulsive, riveting and bravely observed exploration of power, class, race, domesticity and motherhood.

Horace, half-white half-Paiute Indian, dreams of bigger things, however, and leaving behind the stability of the farm, heads south to re-invent himself as a boxer. Slowly, painfully, the possibility emerges that his dreams might not just be the delusions of a lost soul . . . but at what cost, and what of those he’s left behind? An extraordinary work of compassion – a novel about the urgent need for empathy and understanding – Don’t Skip Out on Me is essential reading, now more than ever.

Originally from Reno, WILLY VLAUTIN lives in Scappoose, Oregon. He has published four acclaimed novels, The Motel Life, Northline, Lean on Pete, which was shortlisted for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and The Free. He also founded the band Richmond Fontaine , who produced nine studio albums, and more recently The Delines. Andrew Haigh’s film of Lean on Pete is set to be released in early 2018.

The Book of Chocolate Saints Jeet Thayil Jeet Thayil’s follow-up to his bestselling Booker-shortlisted debut Narcopolis is a strange, beautiful hymn to the artistic life lived fearlessly. Francis Newton Xavier has lived a wild existence of excess in pursuit of his uncompromising aesthetic vision. His paintings and poems embodying the decadent jeu d’esprit of his heroes like Baudelaire are the bedrock for a singular international reputation, which is to be celebrated at a show in Delhi. Approaching middle age, Xavier leaves Manhattan following 9/11, and his journey home to India becomes a voyage into his past. From his formative years with an infamous school of Bombay poets – documented by his biographer, Diswas – to an uncertain future of damnation or salvation, Xavier’s story shows how the artist’s life itself can become the final monument. ‘In ambition, Narcopolis is reminiscent of Roberto Bolaño; but it is Denis Johnson’s Jesus’ Son – the best junkie book of the last quarter century – that is its closer kin.’ Daily Telegraph

The thrills and dangers of such a journey lie with the unexpectedness of life’s undercurrents and our uncertain, unknowable selves. The Madonna of the Mountains Elise Valmorbida 1923. Maria Vittoria is embroidering a sheet for her dowry trunk. Her father has gone to find her a husband. He’s taken his mule, a photograph and a pack of food: home-made sopressa sausage, cold polenta, a little flask of wine. No need to take water – the world is full of water. There are no eligible men in this valley or the next one, but her father will not let her marry just anyone, and now, despite Maria’s years, she is still healthy. Her betrothed will see all that. He’ll be looking for a woman who can do the work. Maria can do the work. Everyone in the contrà says that.

Patient X The Case-Book of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa David Peace Ryūnosuke Akutagawa was one of Japan’s great writers – author of the stories ‘Rashomon’ and ‘In a Bamboo Grove’, most famously – who lived through Japan’s turbulent Taisho period of 1912 to 1926, including the devastating 1923 earthquake, only to take his own life at the age of just thirtyfive in 1927. These are the stories of Patient X in one of our iron castles. He will tell his tales to anyone with the ears and the time to listen. Inspired and informed by Akutagawa’s stories, essays and letters, David Peace has fashioned a most extraordinary novel of tales. An intense, passionate, haunting paean to one writer, it also thrillingly explores the act and obsession of writing itself, and the role of the artist, both in public and private life, in times which darkly mirror our own. ‘David Peace is a writer of such immense talent and power.’ The Times

MARIO VARGAS LLOSA was born in Peru in 1936. He is the author of some of the last half-century’s most important novels, including The War of the End of the World, The Feast of the Goat, and Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter. In 2010, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, and he has also won the Cervantes Prize.

The Neighbourhood Mario Vargas Llosa

Alone Chabouté

A politically charged detective novel, The Neighbourhood is a thrilling tale of Peruvian corruption and desire. During Fujimori’s turbulent presidency in Lima in the 1990s, two wealthy couples become embroiled in a disturbing vortex of erotic adventures and political sabotage. When a high-profile businessman is blackmailed by a notorious magazine editor, he is plunged into a scandalous exposé that culminates in murder. As his wife embarks on a secret affair with his best friend’s wife, the two couples suddenly find themselves descending into Peru’s dark underbelly . . . Provocative, ironic, and deeply sensual, this is both a scathing indictment of Fujimori’s regime and an addictive crime thriller from the Nobel Laureate.

On a tiny lighthouse island far from the rest of the world, a hermit lives out his existence. Every week a supply boat leaves provisions, yet the fishermen never leave their boat, and never meet him.

‘Vargas Llosa has remarkable gifts. He demonstrates the super-abundant vitality of the Latin American imagination in its most challenging form.’ Sunday Times

Years spent on this deserted rock, with imagination his sole companion, has made the lighthouse keeper something more than alone, something else entirely. For him, what lies beyond the horizon might be . . . nothing. And so, why would you ever want to leave? But, one day, as curiosity gets the better of him, a new boatman steps onto the island . . .

Christophe CHABOUTÉ was born in Alsace and studied Fine Arts at Angoulême and then Strasbourg. He is the author of many books, including The Park Bench, his UK debut in 2017.

Intertwining tenderness, despair, and humour, Alone captures how someone can be an everyman, and every man is someone. ‘His masterpiece. A visually stunning humanist fable.’ Publishers Weekly, starred review

ANNA BURNS was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She is the author of two novels, No Bones and Little Constructions, and of the novella, Mostly Hero. No Bones won the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize and was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction. She lives in East Sussex, England.

Milkman Anna Burns

Caroline’s Bikini Kirsty Gunn

Set in an un-named city but with a palpable sense of time and place, Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness, of inaction with enormous consequences and deferred decisions for which people are judged and punished.

Art needs a sense of lack to bring about its own effects; where there is no feeling of need to make up a shortfall, there will be no work.

Middle sister is our protagonist. She is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her nearly-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with milkman (which she herself for the life of her cannot work out how it came about). But when first brother-in-law, who of course has sniffed it out, tells first sister, middle sister becomes ‘interesting’. The last thing she ever wanted. To be interesting is to be noticed and to be noticed is dangerous . . . This beautiful and painful novel blends shades of the evocativeness of early Edna O’Brien with Eimear McBride’s exquisite ability to capture voice.

The story of falling in love is the greatest tale ever told, repeated through centuries and across continents, as captivating and mysterious in contemporary London pubs as in Petrarch’s Renaissance Italy. Caroline’s Bikini reinvents the narrative of unrequited love as experienced by a middleaged financier and filtered through his amanuensis. How does the lover imagine and idealise the loved one? In her mischievously intelligent novel about Petrarch and Laura, Dante and Beatrice, Evan and Caroline, Kirsty Gunn explores the abstract nature of courtly love in the modern world. Ready. Steady. Go!

‘A masterclass in technique, Burns’ powerful, disturbing novel considers mental health during the Troubles with an unflinching narrative voice.’ Irish Times for No Bones 18

The Tempest Steve Sem-Sandberg Translated by Anna Paterson

In this hypnotic, shimmering novel, Le Prix Médicis Étranger-winning author Steve Sem-Sandberg reveals the power of secrets to destroy generations of families. After many years away, Andreas returns to his childhood home on a small island off Norway’s coast. Searching through the belongings of his late foster father, Andreas uncovers the sinister events of the island’s past as a summer colony for deprived children, and learns about the disappearance of his parents. Rich in echoes from Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest is a majestic novel from one of our most celebrated European writers, exposing the inherited guilt that haunts an island overgrown with myths. ‘Steve Sem-Sandberg is . . . a kind of Prospero in his own right with mastery of intrigue, characters and plot twists . . . Shakespeare’s play echoes and vibrates through the pages . . . The result is a tale that both shimmers and threatens.’ Svenska Dagbladet

OK, Mr Field Katharine Kilalea Mr Field, a concert pianist travelling back from a performance in London, fractures his left wrist in a train crash. On a whim, he uses his compensation cheque to buy a house he has seen only in a newspaper, a replica of Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye built on a stretch of coast outside Cape Town. When he moves there with his wife Mim, the house – which Le Corbusier designed as ‘a machine for living’ – has a disturbing effect. Mim disappears without apology or explanation and Mr Field can barely summon the strength to search for her. OK, Mr Field is funny and beguiling and like nothing you’ve ever read. It dwells in the silences between words, in the gaps in conversation, and in the distances between people. It confidently guides us into new fictional territory. ‘Katharine Kilalea is to literature what ceramic knives are to cookery. Sleep No More Six Murderous Tales P. D. James The acknowledged ‘Queen of Crime’, P. D. James, was a past master of the short story, weaving together motifs of the Golden Age of crime writing with deep psychological insight to create gripping, suspenseful tales. The Mistletoe Murder and Other Stories contained four of these perfectly formed stories, and this companion volume contains a further six, published here together for the first time. As the six murderous tales unfold, the dark motive of revenge is revealed at the heart of each. Bullying schoolmasters get their comeuppance, unhappy marriages and childhoods are avenged, a murder in the small hours of Christmas Day puts an end to the vicious new lord of the manor, and, from the safety of his nursing home, an octogenarian exerts retribution. Once again, P. D. James shows her expert control of the shortstory form, each with a satisfying twist in the tail. Praise for The Mistletoe Murder and Other Stories: ‘They show James at the height of her powers, gleefully defying expectations.’ Guardian 23

P. D. JAMES (1920–2014) was born in Oxford and educated at Cambridge High School for Girls. From 1949 to 1968 she worked in the National Health Service and subsequently the Home Office. She won awards for crime writing in Britain, America, Italy and Scandinavia, including the Mystery Writers of America Grandmaster Award and The National Arts Club Medal of Honor for Literature (US). She received an OBE in 1983 and was made a life peer in 1991.

Closer Than You Know Brad Parks

What kind of woman walks out on her family? The kind of woman Gregg picked up in a bar three years ago precisely because she had that kind of wildcat energy.

Disaster, Melanie Barrick was once told, is always closer than you know . . .

And now she’s vanished – at least from the life that he and his kid will live. We’ll follow her, to a new town, a new job, and a new friend who thinks he has her figured. So who is this woman who calls herself Polly, how many times has she disappeared before, and who are all the shadowy figures so interested in her whereabouts? Laura Lippman’s brilliant new novel – Anne Tyler’s Ladder of Years as if written by James M. Cain – will ensnare you in the life of one of crime fiction’s most unforgettable heroines.

This was a lesson she learned growing up in the constant upheaval of foster care. She survived, though, and thought she’d put all that behind her – until she arrives at childcare one evening to pick up her son, only to find he’s been removed by Social Services. And no one will say why. Her nightmare deepens when she returns home to discover the police have found drugs on her property. Her case is assigned to Amy Kaye, a no-nonsense assistant commonwealth’s attorney obsessed by a cold case no one wants her to pursue: a serial rapist she believes has victimized dozens of women in the area – including Melanie. Now it’s this mystery man who could be the key to both their futures. ‘Alarmingly plausible and consistently impressive . . . the plotting in particular matches [John Grisham] at his best.’ Sunday Times Thriller of the Month, Say Nothing

All the Beautiful Lies Peter Swanson

Escape and Evasion Christopher Wakling

In a dark and brilliant guessing game of a novel – evoking Patricia Highsmith and Agatha Christie – Peter Swanson once again displays his unique gift for lovingly reprising and refreshing mystery writing’s greatest tropes.

Escape and Evasion is the story of city banker Joseph Aschroft, who, in the book’s opening pages, steals $1.34 billion from his own bank, gives it untraceably to impoverished strangers worldwide, and flees.

On the eve of his college graduation, Harry is called home by his step-mother Alice, to their house on the Maine coast, following the unexpected death of his father.

Why has he done this, and will he get away with it?

But who really is Alice, his father’s much younger second wife? In a brilliant split narrative, Peter Swanson teases out the stories and damage that lie in her past. And as her story entwines with Harry’s in the present, things grow increasingly dark and threatening – will Harry be able to see any of it clearly through his own confused feelings? ‘He’s the real deal . . . in the ranks of the killer elite alongside Tana French, Gillian Flynn and Lauren Beukes.’ Joe Hill

An ex-soldier, Joseph discounts leaving the country in favour of hiding close by, first in the city, then in the woods near the home of his estranged family. He is hunted by Ben Lancaster, the bank’s head of security and, as it happens, a former army friend. The two men share a violent, guilt-ridden past.

CHRISTOPHER WAKLING’s six previous novels include The Devil’s Mask (a Sunday Times Book of the Year) and What I Did (‘the novel that should have won the Booker Prize’ – Daily Mail ). He has worked as a lawyer and travel writer and teaches fiction at Curtis Brown Creative. Married with two children, he lives in Bristol.

Escape and Evasion is a tragicomic tale about buried secrets, the lengths a man will go to to win back those he loves, and the fallout from a monumental change of heart.

The Blinds Adam Sternbergh

Martinique, 1765: brothers Emile and Lucien are charged by their master with a mission – they must return home to Grenada and smuggle back the forty-two slaves claimed by English invaders. While Lucien sees the trip as a great adventure, the older and worldlier Emile has no illusions of the dangers they will face . . .

An astonishing debut on the Faber list, described by Dennis Lehane as ‘witty, electrifying, vivid and thoroughly original.’

Based on a remarkable and little-known true story, Jane Harris’s third novel is both a heart-breaking trip into our troubled colonial past, and a stunning act of literary ventriloquism. ‘Compelling, suspenseful, and highly enjoyable.’ John Burnside, The Times on Gillepsie & I ‘Harris’s voice is an original one, and her rollicking yet delicate narrative pitch sets the book apart.’ Joanna Briscoe, Guardian on The Observations

Imagine a place populated by criminals – but ones who have been granted new identities and a second chance, their violent memories erased. Welcome to The Blinds, a dusty town in rural Texas populated by misfits who’ve opted into an experimental programme, agreeing to the condition that they can never leave.

ADAM STERNBERGH is the culture editor of the New York Times Magazine. Formerly an editor-at-large for New York, his writing has been featured in several other publications including GQ, The Times, and on the radio program This American Life. He lives in Brooklyn.

Simmering with violence and deception, The Blinds is a provocative, keenly intelligent thriller never to be forgotten.

Say Nothing Brad Parks

Twelve-year-old Yuri Zipit is the official food-taster for the leader of the Soviet Union. He sits quietly through another excessive state dinner and witnesses it all – betrayals, body doubles, buffoonery. He’s starting to get the hang of this politics thing, but there is so much to learn. Who knew that a man could be in five places at once? That someone could break your nose as a sign of friendship. That people could be disinvented . . . The Zoo is a cutting satire told through the refreshing voice of one gutsy boy who will not give up on hope.

Translated by Srinath Perur

Marcel Theroux takes the reader on a spellbinding journey through nineteenth-century Paris, the Russian Empire and the high plateau of India, through a world of spies and double-cross, propaganda and revolutionary violence, lost love and antisemitism, and into a modern world where lies have the power of truth.

Waldo, a fêted film-maker, is confined by old age and ill health to his London apartment. Frail and frustrated, he is cared for by his lovely – and younger – wife, Zee. But when he suspects that Zee is beginning an affair with Eddie, ‘more than an acquaintance and less than a friend for over thirty years’, Waldo is pressed to action. Determined to expose the guilty couple, he sets out to prove his suspicions – and then to enact his revenge . . .

A beautiful new edition of one of P. D. James’s most-loved works – the ideal place to start for a reader new to P. D. James’s books.

A normal Wednesday afternoon, and Judge Scott Sampson is preparing to pick up his six-yearold twins from school.

When Adam Dalgliesh visits Larksoken, a remote headland community on the Norfolk coast in the shadow of a nuclear power station, he expects to be engaged only in the sad business of tying up his aunt’s estate. But the peace of Larksoken is illusory. Someone is terrorising the neighbourhood, and Dalgliesh finds himself drawn into the lives of the isolated headlanders in an attempt to uncover what sinister forces are at work.

His wife Alison texts with a change of plan – she will be collecting them instead. But when Alison arrives home later she is alone, and denies any knowledge of the text.

‘The Zoo is exquisite. A biting satire that broke my heart.’ Nathan Filer, author of The Shock of the Fall ‘The energy and originality of Christopher Wilson’s imagination is at its most striking in this fascinating novel. Its narrator and central character is so engaging that it’s impossible to put the book down.’ Diana Athill

In this masterful novel a closeknit family is delivered from near-destitution to sudden wealth after the narrator’s uncle founds a successful spice company. But with this new-found prosperity comes a shift in the family dynamics: allegiances and desires realign, marriages are arranged and begin to falter, and conflict brews ominously in the background. ‘One of the finest literary works you will ever encounter . . . Literary perfection is elusive, yet it is possible, as Vivek Shanbhag demonstrates in his magnificent novella.’ Eileen Battersby, Irish Times ‘A story that packs a powerful punch . . . Shanbhag is the real deal, this gem of a novel resounding with chilling truths.’ Independent ‘Vivek Shanbhag is one of those writers whose voice takes your breath away at the first encounter.’ Yiyun Li, author of A Thousand Years of Good Prayers

Based on real events, The Secret Books is at once a page-turning adventure, a meditation on the nature of belief and an examination of the stories that humans are willing to kill and die for.

‘Hanif Kureishi’s short, sharp tale of revenge is diabolical fun.’ Fiona Wilson, The Times

‘The Secret Books, ingenious, stylish, at once sardonic and accommodating, is a meditation on our abiding need for stories, which itself has a gloriously entertaining story to tell.’ John Banville

‘Waldo’s imaginative life in The Nothing may be destructive, but his creator’s is as nourishing as ever.’ Maggie Fergusson, Newsweek

‘P. D. James at better than her best . . . so interesting are her characters, so absorbing her depiction of time and place, so rich the texture of the tale she tells . . . She has exceeded herself.’ New York Times

Then the phone rings: a voice warns them that if they want to see their children again, Scott must do exactly what he is told in an upcoming court case and, most importantly, they must ‘say nothing’ . . . ‘Alarmingly plausible and consistently impressive . . . The plotting in particular matches Grisham at his best.’ Sunday Times Thriller of the Month ‘This twisted tale is written with such power and intelligence that you have no option other than to read it under your desk at work.’ Daily Mail

Killing and Dying Adrian Tomine

The Lucky Ones Julianne Pachico

The Golden Legend Nadeem Aslam

The Devil and Webster Jean Hanff Korelitz

The Intrusions Stav Sherez

Every Day Above Ground Glen Erik Hamilton

In his first full-length work since Shortcomings in 2007, Adrian Tomine has produced another unforgettable collection of stories and characters. From the master of the small gesture, it is a fraught, realist masterpiece about the weight of love and its absence, the pride and disappointment of family, the anxiety and hopefulness of being alive in the twenty-first century.

The Lucky Ones is Julianne Pachico’s haunting debut work of fiction. Set in lush, heady Colombia – and also in a junglelike New York City – it brings together the fates of guerrilla soldiers, rich kids, rabbits, hostages, bourgeois expats, and drug dealers. Exploring what makes a victim and what makes a perpetrator, these stories show lives fatefully entwined, despite deep cultural divides.

For weeks, someone has been broadcasting people’s secrets from the minarets of the city mosques, striking fear into the hearts of Christians and Muslims alike. And when shots ring out on the Grand Trunk Road, and Nargis’s husband Massud is caught in the crossfire, she is unable to confess to him her greatest secret before he dies . . .

At Webster College, on an elite New England campus, a student protest is underway. Initially supported, the protest begins to grow and fester, attracting the media. Attention is focused on one charismatic student, a Palestinian immigrant named Omar, and as tensions on the campus rise, those involved face an impossible and ultimately tragic conflict.

When a drugged and distressed young woman arrives at their station claiming her friend has been abducted, Detectives Carrigan and Miller are thrust into the terrifying world of stalking and obsession. From a backpackers’ hostel in Bayswater, to the emerging threat of online intimidation, hacking and control, The Intrusions explores themes of dark psychology as Carrigan and Miller hunt for the shadowy figure behind a frightening and spiralling campaign of intrusion . . .

Former Army Ranger Van Shaw is out of money, and struggling to keep on the straight and narrow. When an old contact shows up on his doorstep, fresh out of prison and claiming to know the whereabouts of a hidden stash of gold, Van feels the powerful pull of his past. The trouble is, some things are too good to be true . . .

‘Adrian Tomine can draw, think, write and feel. He sees everything, he knows everything; he’s in your apartment, he’s on the subway, he’s in your dreams . . . He has more ideas in twenty panels than novelists have in a lifetime.’ Zadie Smith

‘Innovative and arresting . . . Each story in this dazzling collection is filled with snarling prose and bravura narrative moves: astonishing jump cuts, thrilling imaginative flights, sudden stabs of surrealism.’ Sunday Times ‘Astounding . . . just breathtaking: bizarre, beautiful, and brutal. I could not put it down.’ The Pool

From the acclaimed author of Maps for Lost Lovers and The Blind Man’s Garden, The Golden Legend is a brave, timely, searingly beautiful novel set in contemporary Pakistan. ‘Remarkable . . . a work of quiet rage and searing beauty.’ Economist

‘An engrossing, thought-provoking must-read.’ Daily Mail ‘A sharp and insightful novel . . . with a clever plot twist. This ought to be the start of a golden age for the campus novel.’ New York Post

‘A Silence of the Lambs for the internet age.’ Ian Rankin

‘Exquisite [and] exhilarating.’ Guardian

‘Engaging . . . Deftly tackles protest throughout the generations.’ Observer

‘Stav Sherez is a master storyteller and a brilliant stylist . . . and Geneva Miller is fast becoming my favourite fictional female detective since Prime Suspect’s Jane Tennison.’ Erin Kelly

‘Hamilton has crafted a compelling new hero in Van Shaw.’ Gregg Hurwitz, author of Orphan X ‘Jack Reacher may just have a fresh rival in Hamilton’s Van Shaw . . . There will be more, Shaw is too taut and smart a hero for there not to be.’ Geoffrey Wansell, Daily Mail on Hard Cold Winter

The Contract A John Q Thriller

JM Gulvin

In New Orleans, Texas Ranger John Q is out of his jurisdiction, and possibly out of his depth. After a series of murders it seems that every time he asks questions there’s trouble. But who could be trying to set him up, and why, and who can he turn to in a city where loyalties and family ties rule? Infused with the rhythms of its iconic setting, The Contract is a thriller to keep even the most seasoned crime readers gripped and guessing all the way to its endgame.

Fateful Mornings Tom Bouman

Walk in Silence John Gordon Sinclair

For fans of James Lee Burke and Cormac McCarthy, Tom Bouman is the new must-read author exploring the outer darkness of contemporary America.

Keira Lynch is a lawyer who’s no stranger to trouble; but having only just landed in Albania on the trail of a kidnapped boy, she’s already up to her neck in it. She thought money would help her, but in a brutal underworld where anything can be bartered – trust, loyalty, even lives – his kidnappers have other ideas . . .

Officer Henry Farrell’s life is getting complicated – widowed and more traumatised than he cares to admit, he is also caught up in an affair with a local woman. Then when a troubled old acquaintance becomes the prime suspect in the disappearance of his girlfriend, the ensuing investigation threatens to upend Farrell’s hidden wilderness.

Can she walk away in silence, and save the boy? Or will she have to play the game, fight and risk losing everything? ‘A hard, tough ride on the wild side that lingers in the mind.’ Daily Mail on Blood Whispers

‘Gulvin hits bullseye on plot, characters and style. His writing is pared-down yet atmospheric, with echoes of Elmore Leonard and even Cormac McCarthy.’ Thriller Books Journal

‘A terrific writer. Definitely one to keep an eye on.’ Dennis Lehane ‘Brings pastoral America to life as surely as if it were written by William Faulkner . . . A tour de force.’ Geoffrey Wansell, Daily Mail on Dry Bones in the Valley

‘An impressive debut . . . Fast and bloody, though with some moving touches, and Sinclair scores top marks for the exceptionally vivid dialogue.’ The Times on Seventy Times Seven

BRIAN GLANVILLE, novelist and journalist, is one of the UK’s best writers on football. He spent nearly thirty years as a football correspondent for the Sunday Times to which he is still a contributor. He has also written for The People as well as contributing obituaries of prominent players to the Guardian.

The Story of the World Cup Brian Glanville

Letter to Louis Alison White

Brian Glanville’s dramatic history of the world’s leading football tournament has become the most authoritative guide to the World Cup. His classic account is a celebration of the great players and famous matches in the competition from Uruguay in 1930 to Brazil in 2014 – as well as a bold attack on those who have mismanaged the ‘beautiful game’. Fully revised and updated in anticipation of Russia’s hosting of the event in 2018, this is the definitive book on the World Cup for football fans and novices alike.

I’ve never quite known where to begin when someone asks me what I’ve been up to. I’ve never quite known how to explain what our daily life is like. I wanted to write how it is in order to give others a greater understanding of disability and caring. And to be totally honest, I wanted to write something that would make people consider being Louis’s friend.

‘It’s the gold standard of sports writing . . . It’s got match reports and polemic [like] a reference book, but it gives more of a perspective, more vision.’ David Baddiel

So here is me introducing you: Louis, this is your story. Readers, this is my son. ‘I only meant to have a quick look and I’ve finished it. It’s so good – a beautiful piece of writing that really did have me gripped from the first page. I was worried I’d find it upsetting and of course it is very moving but so compelling and Alison’s voice is so strong that I couldn’t help but read on. I loved the occasional jokes. I also loved the cast of characters – Louis himself but everyone else, too, especially Spike. What an achievement.’ Cathy Rentzenbrink

The Pixels of Paul Cézanne is a collection of essays by Wim Wenders in which he presents his observations and reflections on the fellow artists who have influenced, shaped and inspired him. ‘How do they do it?’ Wenders asks as he looks at the dance work of Pina Bausch, the paintings of Paul Cézanne, Edward Hopper, and Andrew Wyeth, or the films of Ingmar Bergman, Michelangelo Antonioni, Ozu, Anthony Mann, Douglas Sirk and Sam Fuller. He works towards the answer by writing about them, trying to understand their individual perspectives and, in the process, he reveals his own art of perception. These are texts of rare poignancy by one of the masters of cinema.

Owl Sense Miriam Darlington A shadow strays over the grass. The owl swerves and hovers briefly on moth-light wings. No sound comes from its flight, and it swivels its course as if lifted on a ripple of air. Owls have captivated the human imagination for millennia; as predator, messenger, emblem of wisdom, portent of doom or something sweet to print on a tote bag. Darlington sets out to tell a new story. Her fieldwork begins with wild encounters in the British Isles and travels to the frosted borders of the Arctic, identifying every European species of this charismatic and elusive bird. In her watching and deep listening to the natural world, she cleaves myth from reality and brings this magnificent creature to life. ‘Otter Country is proper nature writing, revealing as much about the writer’s obsession with otters as of the animal itself and leaving us in awe of both.’ Sir John Lister-Kaye

01/02/18

MIRIAM DARLINGTON is a poet and author of Otter Country. Reviewers hailed her as a successor to Gavin Maxwell and Henry Williamson, and as a central part of the new nature writing movement. She has a PhD in English from the University of Exeter and a particular interest in the tensions, overlaps and relationships between science, poetry, nature writing and the changing ecology of human-animal relations. She writes for ‘Nature Notebook’ in The Times.

Whether writing on Titanic, Margaret Atwood, or The Wire, her pieces offer elegant and surprising insights. Moore is a practitioner who writes criticism; her discussion of other people’s work is based on her understanding of what it really takes to make something out of nothing: of what it takes to make art. In sparkling prose – studded with hilarious insights – Moore’s meditations are a rare opportunity to witness a brilliant mind thinking things through and figuring things out on the page. ‘The best American writer of her generation.’ Nick Hornby

The Spirit of the Age, the revelatory second instalment in Michael Broers’s definitive life of Napoleon, sheds new light on this remarkable chapter in the life of an extraordinary man. Using Napoleon’s newly edited diaries, Broers brings the great ruler to life with energy, style and brand new research.

STEPHEN WALSH is an Emeritus Professor of Cardiff University, where he held a personal chair in music from 2001 to 2013. He was for many years deputy music critic of the Observer, a frequent reviewer for the London Times, Daily Telegraph and Financial Times, and a well-known broadcaster for the BBC. He now reviews for the arts website theartsdesk.com. His most recent books include a two-volume biography of Igor Stravinsky and a study of the Russian kuchka, Musorgsky and his Circle: A Russian Musical Adventure (Faber). 01/03/18

Debussy A Painter in Sound Stephen Walsh Claude Debussy was that rare creature, a composer who reinvented the language of music without alienating the majority of music lovers. He is the modernist everyone loves. How did he manage this? Was it through the association of his music with visual images, or was it simply that, by throwing out the rule book of the Paris Conservatoire where he studied, his music put beauty of sound above the spiritual ambitions of the German tradition from which those rules derived? Debussy’s life was of extraordinary interest because he crossed artistic boundaries, associating as much with poets and artists as with musicians. Stephen Walsh’s thought-provoking biography – the first major study of the composer for forty years – is told partly through the events of Debussy’s life, and partly through a critical discussion of his music, shedding new light on one of the most influential composers of the early twentieth century.

Music Lessons The Collège de France Lectures Pierre Boulez The influence of Pierre Boulez owes as much to his formidable talents as a writer and polemicist as to his gifts as a composer and conductor. He died in 2016 but remains one of the most revered figures in the world of classical music. During his lifetime he published several influential books with Faber, perhaps most notably Orientations (1986). Translated into English for the first time, Music Lessons contains the complete texts of Boulez’s Collège de France lectures, his most significant writings from the 1970s to the 1990s, which will make a major contribution to the discussion in English about Boulez’s aesthetic legacy. In addition to composers, music historians, theorists and music students, this book will be invaluable to those interested in the history and aesthetics of twentieth century music, musical manifestations of artistic modernism, the history of ideas and French intellectual and cultural history.

PIERRE BOULEZ (1925–2016) steered the course of post-war contemporary concert music. Not only was he one of the most gifted and ground-breaking composers of our times, but he conducted some of the world’s greatest orchestras and founded some of our most enduring musical institutions. His provocative pronouncements made him a hotly discussed cultural figure not only in France but worldwide.

The Happy Brain Dean Burnett Do you want to be happy?

Mrs Moreau’s Warbler How Birds Got Their Names Stephen Moss

Well, of course you do. But why? What does happiness actually mean? Where does it come from? And can you buy it?

We use names so often that few of us ever pause to wonder about their origins. What do they mean? And where did they come from?

In The Happy Brain, neuroscientist Dean Burnett delves deep into the inner workings of our minds to answer these fundamental questions – and many more besides. From whether happiness really begins at home [spoiler alert: yes – sort of] to what love, sex, money and success actually do to our brains, Burnett offers a uniquely entertaining insight into what it means to be human.

From the common starling to the many-coloured rush tyrant, the names we have given to birds are some of the most vivid and evocative words in the English language. They can carry whole stories – of arctic expeditions, pitched battles between rival ornithologists or touching romantic gestures.

‘Compelling and wise and rational. You know you can trust him . . . a great read.’ Jon Ronson (on The Idiot Brain)

Through fascinating encounters with the bird kingdom and the rich cast of characters responsible for coming up with their names, in Mrs Moreau’s Warbler Stephen Moss shows how these words reveal as much about ourselves and our relationship with the natural world as about the creatures they describe. ‘Vibrant, fascinating, poetic.’ Chris Packham, on Wonderland

Mothers Jacqueline Rose Why are mothers blamed for our political and personal and failings; the ultimate scapegoat for everything that is wrong with the world and who we are? Jacqueline Rose, one of our most important contemporary thinkers, argues that mothers today are held accountable for the breakdown in the social fabric, the threat to welfare, the health of the nation – from the funding crisis in the NHS to the influx of foreigners of our shores. But mothers are also expected to redeem us: to protect us from everything that is hardest to contemplate about our society and ourselves. Mothers considers this cruel paradox. From the firing of pregnant women in the UK, to Roald Dahl’s Matilda, and back to motherhood in slavery and in the ancient world, Rose issues her plea: unless we recognise what we are asking mothers to perform in the world – and for the world – we will continue to tear both the world and mothers to pieces.

Football Leaks

Writing a Novel

Rafael Buschmann and Michael Wulzinger

Richard Skinner

The Dirty Dealings in International Football

The explosive story of the biggest leak in sporting history. In 2016, a whistleblower known only as ‘John’ leaked 18.6 million confidential documents to Der Spiegel, revealing the shadowy dealings of clubs and individuals at the highest echelons of international football. And the story the leak tells is astonishing. In Football Leaks, Spiegel journalists Rafael Buschmann and Michael Wulzinger reveal the secrets they uncovered. From the eye-popping contracts of players such as Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic and Özil to exorbitant agent fees, and from third-party ownership to opaque tax structures, this is a tale rife with greed, loopholes and corruption. Simultaneously, it is the gripping story of a whistleblower who wanted to liberate football – and now finds himself on the run.

Bring Your Ideas to Life Pulling together his years of experience as a novelist and a teacher, Richard Skinner provides in Writing a Novel not a set of rules and regulations but an atlas: a guide to finding your own way over the treacherous passes of your first novel. He covers the basics – narrators, characters, settings – with charm and rigour. But he also shows that the journey towards a final manuscript is as important as the finished article itself. Many of Skinner’s students have gone on to secure publishing deals and many more have left with work to be proud of. Writing a Novel will give students the confidence to face any number of blank pages.

RICHARD SKINNER is the Director of the Fiction Programme at Faber Academy. He has taught the Faber Academy’s flagship six-month course, ‘Writing A Novel’, since its inception in 2009, and has helped hundreds of people to tell their stories, including Baileys Prize–shortlisted Laline Paull and international bestselling author S. J. Watson. Richard is also a talented novelist in his own right: his most recent book, The Mirror, was described as ‘beautifully written . . . immersive . . . captivating’ by the Guardian.

The Disappearance of Émile Zola Love, Literature and the Dreyfus Case Michael Rosen

Period Piece

Pronounced guilty of libel and sentenced to a year in prison, novelist Émile Zola went on the run. Zola’s crime had been to defend a wrongly convicted man, in what became known as the Dreyfus Affair. Fleeing France he ended up living in the suburbs of south London unable to speak a word of English. Michael Rosen brings to life the sleepy world of late Victorian suburbia, Zola’s turbulent politics and his tangled private life, in an incredible true story of a great writer’s personal bravery in the face of the greatest political scandal of the age.

This new edition celebrates the 65th anniversary of the publication of Period Piece, which has never been out of print.

A new and updated paperback edition to celebrate the centenary of the foundation of the Royal Air Force.

Period Piece is the classic memoir of a Cambridge childhood, written by Charles Darwin’s granddaughter – a shrewd, touching and comic portrait of eccentric relations and of Cambridge society. It evokes a time when long summer days where disturbed by nothing noisier than a horse, and long winter nights were lit only by candle or gas lamp. The small incidents of life are recorded here in delightful prose and beautiful illustrations.

In 1945 Britain was the world’s leading pioneer and builder of jet aircraft. Design geniuses dreamt up and built astonishing new planes, and test pilots were the rock stars of their age. But by the late 1960s, the designers, the pilots and the legendary companies they worked for were gone. James Hamilton-Paterson captures the season of glory, celebrating the time when Britain’s aircraft ruled the world.

‘This engaging book draws on letters, photographs and journals to recreate Zola’s fugitive life in London, capturing the fraught relationship between his wife and mistress, the avid press coverage and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death.’ Financial Times

Confessions of a Recovering A Book of Untruths Environmentalist Miranda Doyle Paul Kingsnorth A Book of Untruths is a family story Paul Kingsnorth was once an activist, an ardent environmentalist. But as the environmental movement began to focus on ‘sustainability’ rather than the defence of wild places for their own sake and as global conditions reportedly worsened, he grew disenchanted with the movement that he once embraced. Provocative and urgent, iconoclastic and fearless, this ultimately hopeful book poses hard questions about how we’ve lived and how we should live. ‘Kingsnorth at his best, a tremendous combination of the personal and the political . . . There’s plenty to enjoy, learn from and even inspire.’ Observer

John Julius Norwich

The James Bulger Case

Friday, 12 February 1993. Two outwardly unremarkable tenyear-old boys began the day by playing truant and ended it running an errand for the local video shop. In between they abducted and killed a two-yearold boy, James Bulger. In search of an explanation, award-winning journalist David James Smith looks behind the misinformation, misunderstanding and sensational reporting to an exact account of the events of that day. A sensitive and definitive account, The Sleep of Reason achieves a unique understanding of the James Bulger case, and comes as close as may ever be possible to explaining how two ten-year-olds could kill. ‘The most harrowing, heartbreaking and definitive account of the murder, its aftermath and legacy.’ David Peace

‘An important and stimulating collection of essays by a radically original writer.’ Geoff Dyer

1016–1130

The Normans in the South is the first of two volumes that recount the dazzling story of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily. It tells the story of Robert Guiscard, the extraordinary European adventurer who, in one year, 1084, had both the Eastern and Western Emperors retreating before him and one of the most formidable of medieval Popes in his power. The Normans in the South details the creation of a cosmopolitan kingdom whose remaining monuments still dazzle us today. ‘Diligence, narrative skill, and a scholarship fired by enthusiasm.’ Sunday Telegraph ‘Very enjoyable indeed. It is beautifully written.’ Nancy Mitford

1130–1194

This is the second volume of John Julius Norwich’s scintillating narrative history of the Normans in Sicily. When on Christmas Day 1130 Roger de Hauteville was crowned first King of Sicily, the island entered a golden age. Norman and Italian, Greek and Arab, Lombard, Englishman and Jew all contributed to a vibrant cosmopolitan culture; and to an atmosphere of racial and religious toleration unparalleled in Europe. But sixty-four years later, to the day, the sun set on the Sicilian Kingdom. ‘Instructive throughout, as well as consistently entertaining.’ New York Times Book Review

Shakespeare’s Kings John Julius Norwich Shakespeare’s Kings is a brilliant narrative survey of a nation’s history as portrayed by the nation’s greatest writer, William Shakespeare, recounting the story of what really happened between 1337 and 1485 by examining the history plays. Just where did history stop and drama begin? John Julius Norwich establishes just how real Shakespeare’s characters and events are and what liberties he took with the facts to entertain his audience. ‘Colourful . . . Lively . . . Turns the history of England in the Middle Ages into a tempestuous chronicle of family feuds and political machinations.’ New York Times

To Throw Away Unopened Viv Albertine At the launch party for her memoir, the musician Viv Albertine received news that her mother was dying, and spent a few final hours with the woman who was, in a sense, the love of her life. In the turbulent weeks after the funeral, Viv made a series of discoveries that revealed the role of family conflicts in propelling her towards the uncompromising world of punk. Part radical reinvention of the memoir form; part feminist manifesto; part domestic noir; part polemic on motherhood; To Throw Away Unopened is an indefinable book exploring the nature of intimacy. Unapologetically honest, this is a story of human dysfunctionality which miraculously reveals how we do manage to function, live and love.

Songwriter and musician VIV ALBERTINE was the guitarist in cult female punk band The Slits. Her first solo album The Vermilion Border was released in 2012, and her memoir, Clothes, Clothes, Clothes, Music, Music, Music, Boys, Boys, Boys was a Sunday Times, Mojo, Rough Trade, and NME Book of the Year in 2014, as well as being shortlisted for the National Book Awards.

Raw: My Journey Into the Wu-Tang Lamont U-God Hawkins The Wu-Tang Clan is American hip hop royalty. Rolling Stone called them the ‘best rap group ever’ and their debut album is considered one of the greatest of all time. Since 1992, they have released seven gold and platinum studio albums with sales of more than 40 million copies. So how did nine kids from the Brownsville projects go from nothing to global icons? Remarkably, no one has told their story – until now. Raw is the incredible first-person account of one boy’s journey from the Staten Island projects to international stardom. Part social history, part confessional memoir, U-God’s intimate portrait of his life – and those of his WuTang brothers – is a brave and unfiltered account of escaping poverty to transform the New York hip hop scene for ever. ‘Bona fide hip hop royalty . . . You can’t simply file away the Wu-Tang in a corner of your world. They’re too total, their demands on you too huge to negotiate without obsession. They seep into your body, affect the mind, burrow into your soul, colour your whole experience.’ Guardian 66

All Gates Open is a music book like no other. It comprises two elements of equal weight: a biography of the group by Rob Young and a kiosk curated by Irmin Schmidt. The latter explores the tentacular influence Can have had upon not just music, but also the visual arts, poetry and film. Can have been a direct source of inspiration for numerous genres. Their music was created entirely on its own terms, and All Gates Open describes their history and continuing legacy with unparalleled originality and insight.

Mars by 1980 The Story of Electronic Music David Stubbs

2023 a trilogy The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu

Electronic music is now ubiquitous, from mainstream pop hits to the furthest reaches of the avant garde. But how did we get here? In Mars by 1980, David Stubbs charts the evolution of synthesised tones, from the earliest mechanical experiments in the late nineteenth century, through the musique concrète of the futurists and radical composers such as Pierre Schaeffer and Karl Stockhausen, to the gradual absorption of electronic instrumentation into the mainstream, be it through the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, grandiose prog rock or the DIY approach of electronica, house and techno. It’s a tale of mavericks and future dreamers, malfunctioning devices and sonic mayhem. But above all, it’s an essential story of authenticity: is this music? Mars by 1980 is the definitive account that answers that question.

The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu Well we’re back again, They never kicked us out, twenty thousand years of SHOUT SHOUT SHOUT Down through the epochs and out across the continents, generation upon generation of the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu have told variants of the same story – an end of days story, a final chapter story. Three Poems Hannah Sullivan

Black Sun Toby Martinez de las Rivas

Hannah Sullivan’s debut collection is a revelation – three poems of startling intensity, ambition and length. Though each poem stands apart, their inventive and looping encounters make for a compelling unity. ‘You, Very Young in New York’ is a study of romantic possibility and disillusion in a great American city. ‘Repeat Until Time’ begins with a move to California and unfolds into a philosophical essay on repetition. ‘The Sandpit After Rain’ explores the birth of a child and the loss of a father with exacting clarity.

Toby Martinez de las Rivas is regarded as one of the most distinctive voices to have emerged in recent times; to some, a modern-day William Blake. The Guardian described Terror, his first book, as ‘visionary’ and ‘exciting’, the New Statesman as ‘remarkable’, and all combined to praise its brave and lucid intensity. Black Sun is a sequel of poise and clarity that is, if anything, more open and accessible than its predecessor. Beginning where Terror left off, it pursues that book’s fascination with history and with theology, with preservation and redemption.

Readers will experience her work with the same exhilaration as they might the great modernising poems of Eliot and Pound, but with the unique perspective of a brilliant new female voice.

‘Terror’s ambitious reach leads the reader into all manner of interesting territory . . . It’s early days, but this is certainly exciting work.’ Sean O’Brien, Guardian

‘Provocative, timely and a welcome contribution to the study of Modernist writing.’ TLS on The Work of Revision

Anecdotal Evidence Wendy Cope

Soho Richard Scott

In her first collection of new poetry since 2011’s acclaimed Family Values, chosen as one of the Telegraph’s 15 Best Poetry Books of All Time, Wendy Cope celebrates the halfforgotten stories of our lives. With curiosity, wisdom and compassion, she captures the everyday happenings that our fast-paced, technology-fuelled lives risk missing. Cope continues to be the most generous of authors, sharing her experience of childhood, marriage and the passing of time, reimagining Shakespeare in unorthodox fashion, and offering heartfelt tributes to friends and public figures including Eric Morecambe and John Cage. Her gift is for making the ‘big world’ feel not only astonishingly real, but bearable, too.

In this intimate and vital debut, Richard Scott creates an uncompromising portrait of love and shame against the backdrop of London’s Soho. Examining how trauma becomes a part of the language we use, Scott takes us back to our roots: childhood incidents, the violence our scars betray, forgotten forebears and histories. The hungers of sexual encounters are underscored by the risks that threaten when we give ourselves to or accept another.

‘Cope, like all the best poets, has the ability to twist the mundane and workaday into something new and enchanting.’ Sunday Times

But the poems celebrate joy and tenderness, too, as in a sequence reimagining the love poetry of Verlaine. The collection crescendos to the title-poem, where a night stroll under the city street lamps becomes a search for ‘true lineage’, a reclamation of stolen ancestors, hope for healing, and, above all, the finding of our truest selves. ‘Brave and aching poems, yes, but not merely so; Scott’s resonant language veers between the plain and the rapturous, testifying to the persistence, no matter what, of pleasure.’ Mark Doty

The Poem Lyric, Sign, Metre Don Paterson Don Paterson is not only one of our great poets, but also an esteemed authority on the art of poetry. In illuminating prose, he offers his treatise on the making and the philosophy of ‘the poem’. Paterson unpicks the process of verse composition with ambition, scholarly flair, and occasional scurrilities, exploring the mechanics of how a poem works and, essentially, what a poem is. His findings take the form of three essays that make up the three sections of the book: ‘Lyric’ attends to the sound of the poem; ‘Sign’ envisages ideas of poetic meaning; while ‘Metre’ studies its underlying rhythms. For all those intrigued by the inner workings of the art form and its fundamental secrets, The Poem will surprise and delight.

In the Blood is Andrew Motion’s beautifully written prose memoir of growing up in postwar England and capturing a moment in time before the loss of childhood innocence. First published in 2006, it is now reissued in a fresh contemporary design to sit alongside its biographical sequel in verse, Essex Clay.

ANDREW MOTION was Poet Laureate from 1999 to 2009 and is cofounder of the online Poetry Archive; in 2015 he was appointed a Homewood Professor in the Arts at Johns Hopkins University. He has received numerous awards for his poetry, including most recently the Ted Hughes Award (2015), and has published four celebrated biographies, a novella, The Invention of Dr Cake (2003), and a memoir, In the Blood (2006). tells the story of his mother’s riding accident, long unconsciousness and slow death; in the second he remembers the end of his father’s much longer life; in the third he describes an encounter that deepens the poem’s tangled themes of loss and memory and retrieval. Although the prevailing mood of the poem has a Tennysonian sweep and melancholy, its wealth of vivid physical details and its narrative momentum make it as compelling as a fast-paced novel: a settling of accounts which admits that final resolutions are impossible.

Having left UK shores and the bounds of his laureateship, in Essex Clay Andrew Motion rekindles, expands and gives a tragic resonance to subjects that have haunted him throughout his writing life. In the first part he

Selected New Jersey Poems / Selected San Francisco Poems August Kleinzahler When August Kleinzahler won the 2004 Griffin Poetry Prize for his collection The Strange Hours Travelers Keep, the judges referred to his work as ‘ferociously on the move, between locations, between forms, between registers’. They might also have added ‘between New Jersey and San Francisco’, the places Kleinzahler has spent his life travelling between, both on the road and on the page. This collection assembles the best of his New Jersey and San Francisco poems for the first time, organised according to place. Providing readers with a gorgeous guide to Kleinzahler’s interior geography, these selected poems function as both word-maps and wordanatomies of one of our greatest poet’s lifelong passions and preoccupations. ‘A poet who inhabits the energies of urban life more fully than anyone currently writing.’ Judges’ Citation, Griffin Poetry Prize 2004.

Enter, Fleeing Mark Ford ‘Intriguing, Funny, Prophetic’ ran the New York Review of Books headline to an admiring survey of the poetry of Mark Ford by the American critic Helen Vendler. The same words could describe Enter, Fleeing, the fourth collection of poems from one of the UK’s most distinctive poets. The work gathered here displays Ford’s power to amuse and startle, to move and disconcert. A number of short poems recreate moments from the poet’s peripatetic childhood, while others dramatise more general states of fear and desire, of excitement and anxiety. As Vendler noted, Ford’s recent work frequently addresses post-colonial issues arising from the collapse of the British Empire, as well as the paradoxes and information loops of today’s globalised economy. Enter, Fleeing is Ford’s most exhilarating and powerful volume to date. ‘Intelligent, restless originality.’ Guardian

House of Lords and Commons Ishion Hutchinson

The Forward Book of Poetry 2018 Various poets

Awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award 2016, Ishion Hutchinson’s book is a profound engagement with culture and landscape, seascape and language, inheritance and race. It speaks – as its title implies – to a pursuit of justice and rebalance of a world in which lords and commoners must live side by side, and where the distance between those who ‘have’ and those who ‘have not’ is a more breaching and surprising journey than we perhaps once thought.

The Forward Book of Poetry 2018 showcases a selection of the best contemporary poetry published in the British Isles over the last year, including the winners of 2017’s prestigious Forward Prizes for Poetry. It is introduced by Andrew Marr, chairman of the Forward Prizes judges. Their final recommendations give a strong sense of the variety, vitality and wit of poetry today, making this anthology – the twentysixth in an annual series – valuable to both first-time poetry readers and those keen to find more new poetry to enjoy.

The poems convey the complex allure of Hutchinson’s native Jamaican landscape, and the violent forces that shaped its history, with remarkable lyric precision. But they speak far beyond Caribbean experience, thanks to the author’s uncanny ability to reach the universal within the local.

Contributors include: Emily Berry, Tara Bergin, Michael Longley, Sinéad Morrissey, Ocean Vuong, Simon Armitage and Daljit Nagra.

‘Ishion Hutchinson’s darkly tinged yet exuberant new poems are the strongest to come out of the Caribbean in a generation.’ William Logan, New York Times Book Review

New Selected Poems Tom Paulin

Pearl Simon Armitage

Drawing on nearly four decades of his poetry and translation, this selection explores the Ireland of Paulin’s childhood to form a complex picture of a country in turmoil and in recovery. But his concerns are as international as they are local, reflected in his long-standing appetite for European writers, histories and languages.

Pearl is an entrancing allegorical tale of grief and lost love, as the narrator is led on a Dantean journey through sorrow to redemption by his vanished beloved. Retaining all the alliterative music of the original, a Middle English poem thought to be by the same anonymous author responsible for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl is here brought to vivid and intricate life in the care of one of the finest poets writing today.

Paulin is one of the defining voices of his generation: brilliantly varied and utterly compelling. ‘Spontaneity is difficult to pull off in poetry but it is a Paulin forté.’ Observer ‘Erudite, playful, obscure, dramatic and didactic by turns.’ Irish Times 18/01/18 PB | 978 0 571 30799 9 | 200pp | £12.99 World All Languages

Aeneid Book VI Seamus Heaney

The Unaccompanied Simon Armitage

The sixth book of Virgil’s Aeneid, in which Aeneas travels into the underworld to meet the spirit of his father, captivated Seamus Heaney from his schooldays. It took on a special significance after his own father’s death, becoming a touchstone to which he would return. His Book VI bears the fruit of a lifetime’s concentration upon it, and marks the end of Heaney’s own poetic journey.

After more than a decade, Simon Armitage’s eleventh collection of poems returns to his trademark contemporary lyricism. Set against a backdrop of economic recession and social division, The Unaccompanied documents a world on the brink, shaped as ever through Armitage’s gifts for clarity and detail as well as his characteristic deadpan wit. A bold new statement of intent.

Muscovy Matthew Francis

Six Bad Poets Christopher Reid

Matthew Francis’s fourth Faber collection explores a world of marvels, real and fantastic: a man takes off for the moon in an engine drawn by geese, a poltergeist moves into a remote Welsh village. The joys of the world and of the imagination find their equivalent in Francis’s joy in the possibilities of language.

Six Bad Poets is a farce-in-verse from 2009 Costa Book of the Year winner, Christopher Reid. It follows the exploits and mishaps of a group of poets in their attempts to navigate London literary society. Six Bad Poets is a fast-paced romp through a world the author has observed closely over many years, and from which he reports with merciless accuracy, zest and humour.

‘Francis has a taste for finding the exotic within the mundane and loves tall tales.’ Sunday Telegraph ‘These tales of the unexpected are a treat . . . full of suspense and charisma.’ Guardian

‘Reid’s phrasing is impeccable.’ Guardian ‘Instantly and compellingly rereadable.’ Spectator ‘The modern master of the long narrative poem.’ William Boyd

The Cure at Troy Seamus Heaney

British Museum Daljit Nagra

Seamus Heaney’s version of Sophocles’ Philoctetes tells of the wounded hero marooned upon an island by the Greeks during the Siege of Troy. As the conflict comes to a climax, the Greeks begin to realise they cannot win the Trojan War without Philoctetes’ invincible bow, and turn back to seek his help. The Cure at Troy is a sharp, fast-paced retelling of the Greek original, shot through with Heaney’s own Irish speech and context.

Daljit Nagra’s contemplative and inquisitive third collection marks a significant departure of style. His political edge has been honed in a series of meditations upon our heritage and the institutions that define them: the BBC, Hadrian’s Wall, the Sikh gurdwaras of our towns. British Museum asks profound questions of our ethics and responsibilities at a time of great challenge to our sense of national identity.

‘A purifying play, in the great tradition of modern Irish drama.’ Sunday Times

‘We need this kind of exemplary theater in which ethical action is struggled for and achieved, despite ambiguity.’ Liz Diamond quoted in the New York Times

‘Exquisitely judged . . . with some beautifully subtle touches.’ Sunday Times ‘Nagra pushing the puckishness of his style to address social themes of increasing significance.’ Guardian ‘Energy, wit and bold imagination.’ New Statesman 17/05/18

The Rockingham Shoot and Other Dramatic Writings Sinclair; The Sisters; Swallows; The Rockingham Shoot; The Power of Darkness

John McGahern

Edited and with an introduction by Stanley van der Ziel John McGahern, the leading Irish novelist of his generation, wrote a substantial number of compelling scripts for radio and television. This volume brings together five of his produced works, at the heart of which sits the previously unpublished The Rockingham Shoot, a powerful play for television concerning a Nationalist teacher whose attempt to prevent his pupils assisting at a pheasant shoot held in honour of the British Ambassador leads to a shockingly violent incident. Collectively, these dramatic works offer an evocative and often stark account of a deeply troubled and divided nation. ‘Like Heaney, or Patrick Kavanagh, or Raymond Carver, or Joyce, he was able to take the stuff of ordinary lives and create of it the highest art.’ Joseph O’Connor, Independent ‘Arguably the most important Irish novelist since Samuel Beckett.’ Guardian 91

JOHN MCGAHERN (1934–2006) was brought up in the west of Ireland and graduated from University College, Dublin. He wrote six highly acclaimed novels and four short-story collections. He received numerous awards and honours, including a Society of Authors Travelling Scholarship, the American-Irish Award, the Prix Etrangère Ecureuil and the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Amongst Women won the GPA and Irish Times Award, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and was adapted for BBC television. His Memoir was published in 2005. 01/03/18 HB | 978 0 571 33663 0 | 208pp | £16.99 World English Language

Travesties Tom Stoppard ‘Tom Stoppard’s Travesties is witty, playful and wise. Forty years on, it is starting to look timeless as well.’ Sunday Times

CHRISTOPHER HAMPTON wrote his first play When Did You Last See My Mother? at the age of eighteen. Later plays include The Philanthropist, Savages, Tales from Hollywood, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, White Chameleon, The Talking Cure and Appomattox; and numerous translations. Musicals include Sunset Boulevard and Stephen Ward. TV and film: The History Man, Hotel du Lac, The Honorary Consul, The Good Father, Dangerous Liaisons, Mary Reilly, Total Eclipse, The Quiet American, A Dangerous Method, Carrington, The Secret Agent and Imagining Argentina, the last three of which he also directed. DANIEL KEHLMANN was born in Munich in 1975 and lives in Berlin and New York. His novels and plays have won numerous prizes, including the Candide Prize, the Doderer Prize, the Kleist Prize, the Welt Literature Prize and the Thomas Mann Prize. His novel Measuring the World has been translated into more than forty languages and is one of the greatest successes of post-war German literature. He is currently a fellow at the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers of the New York Public Library.

‘It is a champagne cocktail, compounded of a balletic nimbleness of invention, a bewildering intricacy of design which reaches the sublime heights where mathematics merge with poetry, and the audacious juggling of a master conjuror.’ Sunday Telegraph ‘A dazzling pyrotechnical feat that combines Wildean pastiche, political history, artistic debate, spoof reminiscence and song-and-dance in marvellously judicious proportions. The text is a Joycean web of literary allusions; yet it radiates sheer intellectual joie de vivre, as if Stoppard were delightedly communicating the fruits of his own researches.’ Guardian Travesties was first performed by the RSC at the Aldwych Theatre, London, in 1974. This edition includes a new preface by the author and revisions made for a revival at the Menier Chocolate Factory, London, in October 2016.

The Mentor Daniel Kehlmann

My Country A work in progress Carol Ann Duffy and Rufus Norris

Benjamin Rubin is a cantankerous old writer still basking in the glory of long-ago success. Martin Wegner is a rising literary star. When Martin is given the opportunity to develop his play under the mentorship of his idol, two massive egos are set on a collision course.

Britannia calls a meeting. Caledonia, Cymru, East Midlands, North East, Northern Ireland and the South West bring the voices of their regions. The debate is passionate and opinions divided. Can there ever be a United Kingdom? Following the Brexit vote, a team from the National Theatre of Great Britain spoke to people aged 9 to 97, nationwide. These testimonials are interwoven with speeches from party leaders of the time.

Translated by Christopher Hampton

The Mentor premiered at the Ustinov Studio, Theatre Royal, Bath, in April 2017 and transferred to the Vaudeville Theatre, London, later that year. ‘A witty comedy of writerly egos . . . Daniel Kehlmann, a bestselling novelist, poet and screenwriter as well as dramatist, knows whereof he writes. There can be no greater tribute to the painful honesty of his play than that it has attracted the attention of translator extraordinaire, Christopher Hampton, who provides a superbly colloquial English version.’ Sunday Express

In the words of people across the UK

My Country opened at the National Theatre, London, in March 2017 before playing at venues around the UK. ‘Carol Ann Duffy brings a major poet’s ear to the music of the text . . . The uncategorisable brilliance of this show . . . therapeutically unkinks your brain and lets you hear at the end a more reverberant and ionised silence. It’s a political intervention; not a retreat into aesthetics. Roll on the next instalment.’ Independent

Don Juan in Soho Patrick Marber

Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour Lee Hall

Inspired by Molière’s farcical, tragic, anarchic Don Juan (1665), Patrick Marber’s Don Juan in Soho transports the action to contemporary London and follows the debauched protagonist’s final adventures.

A bunch of Catholic schoolgirls go wild for a day in the big city, the singing competition a mere obstacle in the way of sex, sambuca and a night back home with the submarine crew in Mantrap.

Don Juan in Soho premiered at the Donmar Warehouse, London, in 2006. This new edition of the text incorporates revisions made for the play’s revival at Wyndham’s Theatre, London, in 2017.

Lee Hall’s musical play adapted from Alan Warner’s novel The Sopranos, premiered at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in 2015 and transferred to the National Theatre, London. The play won the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy 2017 and transferred to the Duke of York’s, London.

Guilty or not guilty?

A play with songs about searching for life’s magic formula, The Sum premiered at the Liverpool Everyman in May 2017. ‘Poignant, powerful and timely.’ The Stage ‘Lizzie Nunnery’s scathing social commentary with songs carries a powerful message . . . a strongly delivered expression of solidarity with hard-working people disadvantaged by a politico-economic system that favours the rich and powerful.’ Guardian 18/05/17

The Country Girls Edna O’Brien

Meet Me at Dawn Zinnie Harris

Edna O’Brien’s wonderful, wild and moving novel shocked the nation on its publication in 1960. Adapted for the stage by the author, The Country Girls, the play, is a highly theatrical and free-flowing telling of this classic coming-of-age story.

Two women wash up on a distant shore following a violent boating accident. Dazed by their experience, they look for a path home. But they discover that this unfamiliar land is not what it seems – and that, though they may be together, they have never been further apart.

This new edition of The Country Girls was published to coincide with its UK premiere at Chichester Festival Theatre in June 2017.

Meet Me at Dawn is a modern fable exploring the triumph of everyday love, the mystery of grief, and the temptation to become lost in a fantasy future that will never be.

Since her debut novel, The Country Girls, Edna O’Brien has written over twenty works of fiction along with biographies of James Joyce and Lord Byron. She is the recipient of many awards including the Irish PEN Lifetime Achievement Award, the American National Arts Gold Medal and the Ulysses Medal.

Meet Me at Dawn by Zinnie Harris premiered at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in August 2017.

CHILDREN’S

A great book for every stage of your life Because every child deserves great books Because there are books no home should be without Because these are the books that will inspire young minds

Faber & Faber has published children’s books since 1929. Some of our very first publications included Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot, starring the now world-famous Macavity, and The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. Our catalogue at the time said, ‘it is by reading such books that children learn the difference between the shoddy and the genuine’. We still believe in the power of reading to transform children’s lives.
