Preface | PERSONAL STATEMENT FAUP & EPFL - UNDERGRADUATE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO 2008-2013

As a student that passed the last five years studying architecture and developing academic projects, the one challenge that remains as my main purpose is to work in an office and be able to participate in real projects that include real life as one component, instead of rules of exercises that does not have in consideration a client or a final result in a real scale. The responsibility and the persistence that involves a architectural process made by an office are consequences that I am capable of giving. The curiosity of knowing the ambience that you live while producing architecture, the exchange of information, the ambition of being certain that I am cut for this job, make me want this more that anything else for my near future. Being part of a long process that involves many specialities and a lot of people that results in architecture, no matter the scale, it is what I need to continue my journey, that certainly requires more architectural culture and real life challenges. I admit the limits that the few years of learning gave me, but the only thing that I can guarantee right now, with no experience in offices, is the strong will that I find in my self to learn the most I can about this practice. As much as I learn, more I find missing. This personal request that I pursue now, started in my first year in college when my oldest teacher told us students what he consider architecture: architecture is life, he said. And how beautiful “life� he showed us.

This exercise it was my first attempt to develop the collective housing as a growing and transformative factor in the urban scale. It was an exercise that introduced the manipulation of the main typologies. For pedagogical reasons it was not considered a specific urban context. The main focus was always to settle strategies and skills that would prepare us to a future real circumstance. However we knew in advance that we were working in an urban scale. Also one requisite was to have an “L” shape to make us solve the corner of the building, as an exception of the repetition of the basic model. In this project a direct access allow us to enter in two distinctive houses in different levels. They distribute themselves in two floors and have in common this light tunnel that passes trough the all building as a vertical element that in each floor finds its own function. The shadows found in the facades were the decisive element of the all composition.

LOCAL IMPRESSIONS

WIDE SURROUNDINGS PLAN

Following the visit to the site and its enlarged surrounding, I observed the different components that structure the constant transformation of the urban context, which follows the stately line of the Boavista Avenue. In fact, all the parts that can be identified own a distinctive and even contradictory character caused by different times and many authors. Consequently, the sequence of buildings over time, which carries with it a history and an economic in constant change, justify the formalization of such different architectures. In an attempt to interpret the surrounding terrain is possible to highlight some important elements that will surely be strong determinants of any proposed intervention. Among them we find two different paradigms spaced by the ground. If one side is the attitude of the modernist model building of the twentieth century, on the other we are facing a uniform grid of the historic city, more precisely with nineteenth century buildings interlaced with the ones from the mid-twentieth century.

Furthermore, we have to deal with the presence of a land that remains as a big question, which may be transformed into several things. Finally, there is the Burgo of Eduardo Souto Moura as the major exception that is associated with other exceptions, but whish nevertheless distanced himself from our ground because largely overcome the limits of scale of our intervention. Beyond what appears tangential to this land is necessary a more wider understanding of this town in order to recognize the Boavista Avenue at its true scale. Therefore it will be important to walk through the avenue in their totality as an attempt to identify the various intersections with other roads and see how those are resolved in the architectural point of view. 10-11

CONCEPT. PROGRAM. SITE.

After a close analyse to the problems collocated by the site and as well the complexity of the program, arises the intervention strategy that aims with the essence of a gesture that wants to be clear in its intention an in its geometry to respond to the pre-existing elements through the dance academy. There are a lot of noise in general and the accessibilities are bringing even more un-definition to this place so immediately I felt the need to introduce an exterior private space, as a generator of the rest of building, that allows the permanence of the students and the sharing of experiences through a strong felling of interiority.

The program distributes itself around that central space establishing visual relations that connects every parts of the school. Therefore, the shape of the building assumes itself as a built limit that steps back to define accessibilities and public platforms associated with the main entrance. Despite the fact that the building is growing formally as a continuous cloister, programmatically and structurally it’s understood as two autonomous arms that distance themselves through other two parallel arms that are characterized by their lightness and transparency. In the arms that constitute the real barriers, one of them includes the more public spaces of the school as the auditorium, the cafeteria and the library, the other arm is developed the teaching spaces as the studios and classrooms. Though the coverage of the building is flat and stable, the floor is always adapting itself to the different levels and also to the demands of the program as an attempt to produce coherent specialities according to the proportions of the interior spaces. The alignments are determined in relation to the existing medieval block in a way that it could be finished what was once interrupted. GROUNDFLOOR PLAN AND ELEVATION

Of the same extension logic it came out the existence of the strong permeability trough the voids that begin in the existing outer space that is expand until the avenue passing the intermediate private spaces of the academy. Thus, while the building in the north/south axis causes the transition between the proximity of the empty spaces, in the between the sunrise and the sunset it becomes an obstacle while it is assumed as something that defines and stops the surrounding contradictions.

SUSTAINABLE HILL

Trying to achieve a sustainable strategy that reuses the rainwater including them in water channels that are shaping the hill taking advantage of it natural slope, the overall concept of creating a pattern that is directly connected with this water net was born. Therefore this channels would regulate the irrigation of the fields and at the same time would be collected within the units for their own use To allow the natural flow of the water it necessarily would imply the need of releasing the ground floor and the creation of a grid of social spaces and circulation alongside the channels, the units need to rise themselves.

PARAMETRIC INTERVENTION

The unit grows through a vertical “tower” that distributes the built branches at different levels which correspond to the different divisions of the dwelling unit. In fact the overlapped arms that emerge on top of each others refers to the theme of the bridge that cross the channel in an attempt to prolong the habitation to the fields that lie there. In order to make this extension the unit elevates itself supporting and distributing the interior spaces in different arms remaining available the private courtyard that we access through the permeability and continuity that bridges allow.

The core of the unit is the courtyard which illuminates the inside spaces and where the permeability between the interior and exterior reaches its maximum. This space perceived as an individual private space gives to the unit a multigenerational character. In fact depending of the size this unit could accommodate multiple families as well as a single multigenerational family. Depending of the direction of the channel, the slope of the hill and the depth of the unit according to the distance between the channels, a single unit finds a wide range of variations capable of including a gradient of distinctive families. In this way the final multiplication of this units finds a cohesive regular and flexible fabric that growths according to the topography. As a field pattern that covers the hill an engine is created capable of smooth transitions that can define a direct adjustment to the natural existing fields.

The reutilization of rainwater includes a system that recollects the water through the higher terraces and redirects them to a deposit in the top of a vertical structure. The fluidity of the water ends with the irrigation of the fields but in the way it finds multiples homes including them in their route of a continuous exchange. The use of the channel is not only for the functional purpose but also to create a physic and symbolic path that will connect all the units contributing to the actual definition of their aggregation.

WALKINH THROUGH THE VILLAGE

How to intervene in a nostalgic village? Not with a small country house or with some local shops, but with a Campus devoted to sound. One Campus capable of including auditoriums, registrations studios, residences for the artists and even rooms for conferences and seminaries. This type of programme implies a scale that it is not given in the village. The only exceptional building that relates to it is a monumental castle that embodies the centre of the village where we find an immense park covered by trees that represents the distance between this castle and a river that crosses the entire village. The main strategy was to find a way to distribute and disguise the new construction where it already makes sense. With this concept we would be able to make the visitors walk through the village and most important, to cross this giant park that often transforms itself into a ghost courtyard. Since the goal was the walk itself, the space between buildings was so important in this project as the buildings themselves.
