Dear Human Resources Director, I am writing to apply for the position of Architectural Assistant. I have migrated recently from Italy looking for unique opportunities to grow both my professional skills and my career profile by working for a dynamic and international firm, with the aim of building a long and fruitful career among the renowned architects of London. My Master’s Degree in Architecture, which I received from the Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in 2013, has provided me with the skills I require to become an exception architect. I have the capability to develop projects at different architectonic scales and I am particurarly interested in residential and cultural buildings, interiors, public space and technology. In the two years since I have received my Master’s Degree I have gained invaluable experience in architectural firms in Italy. Throughout my roles I was involved in a varied array of projects including retail, interiors, renovations, mixed use buildings and urban planning. I am a very experienced user of Autocad (2D), Archicad (2D-3D) and graphic editors such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. In addition, I have a great working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and more recently I have been building my skills and abilities of Revit Architecture and 3D modeling softwares. My native language is Italian and my advanced English skills have ensured that I am competent enough to discuss architectural issues in English. I hope therefore that you will consider my CV with work samples attached herein and I will have the opportunity to discuss the benefits that my skills and experience can bring to your company in order to improve your business. I am available for an interview at your convenience and l Iook forward to hearing from you. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Fabio Bassani

PUBLIC SPACE
This concept rise from the idea to design a contemporary public space by redefining some traditional elements of chinese culture and architecture. I have decided to focus my project upon few strong ideas, such as lights, signs and flows, in order to develop a strong conceptual space able to provide people an emotional experience, on the limit between scenography and urban space.

CENTRAL SQUARE
PATTERN
The main square have a modern design, flexible to different uses. It is surrounded by three circular benches, designed by considering people flows. The pavement is decorated with spot floor lights and fountains in order to let people live different experiences during day and year. The dimensions allow several uses of the space, for instance an orchestra performance or the positioning of an ice skating rink during winter.
The particular shape of the public space have suggested me the idea to start from a traditional figure of the chinese culture, the dragon, in order to create a pattern for the stone’s pavement of the whole area. The reinterpretation and repetition of the “chip” create a wavy pattern that aim to set continuity and dynamism throughout all the public space. Where people’s flows meet creating squares, I have changed the stone’s shade in order to suggest the presence of a project polarity.

LIGHTING Along the perimeter of the area I have placed corten lamps, with a modern curved design, in order to measure the space and give a fluid rhythm. In the tight inner streets I have reinterpreted the idea of chinese triditional suspended paper-lanterns by creating an installation. The concept of a coloured “lighting cloud”, a suspended wavy tensile structure with led which allow people enjoy different atmosphere while walking along the streets during day or night. Lighting pole sculptures provide the enlightenment of the secondary squares.

SCULPTURES/INSTALLATIONS

I have placed different installations along this project, especially in its polarities. At the south-east entrance I have decided to reinterpret the idea of the traditional chinese portal by placing a corten sculpture to suggest the idea of the gateway as a limit (i.e. Richard Serra at Toronto Airport terminal). In the other polarities (except for the main square) I have set an installations of vertical cor-ten luminous poles (i.e. Martha Schwartz, Dublin) in order to suggest continuity by creating a sequence of landmarks.

I have selected different urban elements (benches, lights and installations), depending on their location in the project. The benches have a minimal design and are made up of stone with a base-gap for the LED fixing to provide a sense of lightness and suspension. Along the perimeter they work with lamps to give rhythm, while the wavy bench in the lateral square define the space throughout a dynamic sign. The lighting sculptures mark the space and provide a sequence.
