AURORA BOREALIS ARTIC OBSERVATORY An intentionally poetic proposal arises amidst an anonymous forest – a dynamic and ramified im-plantation, initiating the architectural form.

5|6

The challenge made by the student competition of the ARCHmedium encompassed the creation of an Aurora Borealis Observatory, Northern Lights, in Rovaniemi, Finland.

An intentionally poetic proposal arises amidst an anonymous forest – a dynamic and ramified im-plantation, initiating the architectural form.

The proposed site to the intervention was full of flora in its purest form, endless nature, where is possible to see the Northern Lights up to two thousands nights per year.

The idea of this project proposes an intentional path that will lead to a conglomerate of fragmented buildings, organized hierarchically.

It was intended a project which should allow experiences and relations with the mother nature, almost as a escape to routine of the city and to the society, which agglomerated as programme: a planetarium, restaurant and accommodations with two typologies and as fundamental object, the observatory.

In the centre of the implantation, one can find the most influential parts of the path; this space organizes the voyage but also opens the possibility of new trajectories besides the main one, with lodging and expo zones. In the ultimate purpose of this proposal, the path ends at the point of greatest emphasis of the project, the observatory.

To proposed programme by the competition was added, in the subject of Project III/2, an Interpretative Centre.

From the city to the Architecture, from the public space to the private | Project IV/1

MULTIFAMILY HOUSING COVILHÃ In difficult slope of a degraded residential area, emerges a proposal to explore the potentialities of the “neighbourhood” and the relation with the surrounding, contributing to the rehabilitation of the urban environment.

15 | 16

The proposal of multifamily housing, appears in the final phase of one exercise in the subject of Project IV, which began with the idealization of a urbanism plane till the idealization of a private space. The site to this exercise is a sensible part of the city of Covilhã. Although its geographical position, next to the city centre, the accented slope, the difficulties of access and the many abandoned areas, make difficult its integration in the urban development of the city. It was intended interventions, which student could choose the best zone, to explore the local potentialities, contributing to the restructuring and rehabilitation of the urban space, environment and the relation between the buildings.

Portugal, Covilhã

The project Multifamily Housing Covilhã was thought to establish organization to the street, taking in account the disorganization and degradation of the urban space and buildings. The volume is defined through the alignments of the surroundings, giving it an angle, fundamental to the integration in the local and to the spatial organization. Works as a breach between the family typology and the more individualistic typology. It was understood important to draw adapted typologies to “neighbourhood”, with modest typologies, essentially functional, T0, T2 and T3 Duplex. The balconies are the essence of the building, its establish relation with the street and allow a view to the plain that close the mountain. The wood slats and the metal grid allows privacy to the balconies, mainly allow smoothing the natural illumination.

HOUSE IN BANSKĂ Ĺ TIAVNICA ERASMUS Faculty of Architecture STU Bratislava Design Studio Restoration II

A simple approach, that pretends to valorise the historic and traditional habitation and exalt the relation between the contemporary trace and the medieval architecture.

The proposed exercise in the subject of Design Studio Restoration II challenged proposes of rehabilitation of a traditional house in Banská Štiavnica, a city characterized by the medieval architecture and itself traditionally distinct, proclaimed UNESCO World Heritage.

The rehabilitation project to the House in Banská Štiavnica was based in a simple approach, which pretends explore and valorise the historic and traditional residence, and to establish elements as consistent and exalting complements of the medieval architecture and the exterior space.

It was a historic and traditional house, by its not only construction and ornamental elements – type of windows, renaissance ceilings, wood structures, etc. – but also by the date of its construction and alterations, with construction elements since the XV to XX century.

The new wood elements establishes a relation between the contemporary trace and the medieval architecture and allows better access and communication interior/exterior. Its wood structure of the upper level allowed the creation of new windows on the canopy, as a reinterpretation of the traditional windows of the city.

ERASMUS FA STU Bratislava Architecture Desing Studio II

KINDERGARTEN A poetic relation between the equipment and the surrounding nature, foments the children’s interaction with the inhabited space.

31 | 32

The Kindergarten project in Mlynská Dolina emerges on the sequence of the Architectural Design Studio II exercise, which proposed the idealization of an educational equipment to 60 children, which purpose was explore the architecture’s contribution, of the interior and exterior spaces, in the education and childhood with different needs, stimulating the knowledge, the creativity and the social living. The intervention site it is integrated in a university area of Bratislava in gradual development – planned, organized between green spaces – ideal to create a kindergarten that could receive the children of the university employees.

The impression that the education it should be focused in the knowledge, creativity and fraterniza-tion, inspired the creation of a proposal that explores the children’s interaction with the inhabited space, giving priority to the relation with the nature. The shaped “L”, allows a strong connection between the interior and the exterior playgrounds. The multi-purpose room exalts that relation, assumes itself as a transparent element, of transaction and connection. The multi-purpose room is the element that organizes the programme, connects tree different parts: entrance, kitchen and services, classrooms, and administration. Through the auditorium, interior and exterior, connects the two floors and allows the implantation of the equipment in the slope. The final complement of this relation interior/exterior is the wooden slats that covers all the fa-cades, its texture and colour are comfortable to the children and from the architecture’s point of view adds harmony and sensibility to the shape in the relation with the surrounding nature.

An effective infrastructure places the architecture in the strategies to the urban identity. A city backdrop.

BUS TERMINAL IN CAMPANHĂƒ Thesis | Graduate final project Analysis of contemporary urban fluxes in the city of Oporto. Proposal of a Bus Terminal in CampanhĂŁ.

As graduation final project, this work explores some prominent questions of the reciprocal relation between the city and contemporary society, beginning by the central problem of mobility and, consequently, from the use soils transformations and from the condition and territory identity. Before the problems and needs identified in Oporto city related with the circulation and the public transport operation, it is proposed an optimization of the road public transport (buses), with an infrastructure that completes the transport service adjacent to the Estação de Campanhã. It is wished-for an effective infrastructure, which contributes to the local conjecture and dynamic of city.

It is proposed a shaped “L” volume, which the larger body take on the alignment of the railways and, the smaller body flexes, separating the two principal exterior spaces: the terminal access with garden area and the buses arrival and departure space. Oriented to the side of the terminal access, as a prolongation of the larger body, a canopy protect the pedestrian access to the Estação de Campanhã and the street. The equipment figure as a city backdrop, protect and safeguard the surround and the visitor of the logistic of this infrastructure type, meanwhile tries to smooth a scale relation with the station and the west zone of Campanhã. The volume take on a reticulated modulation by the reinforced concrete structure, white and apparent, which exalts the formal simplicity of the material and organizes all the equipment space. The strength and austerity reinforced concrete, which figure throughout the building, exalts its architectonic quality, in a living body, with a distinct plasticity and mutable identity to the passage of time.
