In the last years I lived in a different country and travelled quite enough. I understood that architects can really change the world. A great awareness of current social and economical issues is fundamental to shape the future of our cities, as well as the implementation of new technologies, methods and materials in the design.
I always work hard to reach my goals and I never stop learning. I feel comfortable to work in multidisciplinary and international environments, thanks to several experiences I had, the Erasmus exchange at TU/Eindhoven and the collaboration with the MIT. I am inclined to work in group, as well as in complete autonomy. I strive to meet deadlines and work long hours if required. I have specific knowledge in BIM, architectural composition, urban morphologies, and graphic design. I am experienced with a wide range of design software.

MARS GARDEN An engineered greenhouse for Mars
ÂŤAs global interest in deep space exploration rises, new mission architectures and new dwelling solutions must be sought for to accomplish longer and safer permanence in space.
The project proposes an innovative space habitat concept that combines a residential module and an original greenhouse module which are integrated in a near closed-loop ecosystem to support human life on Mars. The residential module is the Mars Ice Home designed by NASA. The greenhouse module is a novel concept proposed in this work and specifically developed to address the critical dependence from Earth supplies characterizing current space exploration, together with the poor physical and psychological conditions of astronauts. To achieve these goals, our greenhouse module combines three key elements: a crop cultivation system through hydroponic technologies, the optimal use of internal space through a unique helical internal layout that optimizes space usage, and the integration of technology solutions chosen and adopted by NASA in the Mars Ice Home program, to guarantee full compatibility and efficient coupling with the design solutions developed for the residential module, such as the implementation of an ice layer for radiation shielding. The design of the greenhouse module addresses the choice and cultivation of crops, the internal and external layout of the module and its systems equipment and integration.Âť

THE FOOD SMART CITY The revitalization of Porta Genova in Milan
Impressive data show that cities all over the world are devouring 75% of Earth’s resources. At the current rate, the urban population is predicted to be double by 2050, meaning the 70% of the total global population, thus raising serious questions about how cities could feed themselves in the future.
The project set the goal to reach three main objectives: • Study how food can influence the urban morphology; • Find a solution to manage a vast empty space in the city of Milan, as part of a wider system; • Design an original system of food production in urban environments, which could be used as a device to foster renovation of degraded or abandoned areas. The project was approached through three topics: administration, retail and production of food in the city. These macro-topics were declined in three architectural projects within the framework of the circular economy. The first topic transforms the former railway station in an innovative place of catering, with specific attention to the new food habits and the delivery methods. The second one renovates and expands the former railway warehouse, placing a food market. The third one proposes a novel prototype of vertical farm, a future food hub, which serves the other two spaces. The quite small scale, the compactness and the low construction budget of the farm (compared to similar concepts) supports the attempt of making it a replicable prototype. The three projects are connected by a general redefinition of the entire area of Porta Genova through a new agricultural park, with urban gardens and crops, bridges, a fish basin and a new water reservoir, the Darsena Nova. All the buildings are also designed with the specific purpose of being circular, with completely dismountable wooden and metal structure. The general organization of the masterplan is also thought as a closed-loop system of energy and resources.

BUILDING THE FUTURE MASTERPROJECT Tu / E i n d h o v e n P r o f . B a r b a r a K u i t , To r s t e n S c h r o d e r
In this context this interdisciplinary research and design master project explored, tested and experimented with bio-based composite materials and innovative design strategies through the design of a pavilion situated in the park of the former Zoo in Emmen/Netherlands. From the outset, this project was a collaboration of both chairs architectural design and engineering and innovative structural design. The project was enabled through the intensive and enthusiastic collaboration of the involved Dutch and international students and through the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), Creative industry - Knowledge Innovation Mapping (KIEM) project funding and in close cooperation with its project partners. The pavilion is conceived as a place of passage in which it is possible to walk through, discover and experience the transparency and enclosure of the space simultaneously. The structure consists of three elevated and curved walls that are constructed from hempcrete blocks. The shape of the curvature tries to resume the organic aspect of the park. The composition of blocks is based on a process of parametric shifting and opening in order to create that peculiar curvature and inclination of the walls as well as the the gaps between each of them. These gaps allow to experience the pavilion inside out and vice versa, giving the project a sense of permeability from each side. The three walls partially come together at the top in order to give a sense of a unified whole to the composition but still leaving the visitor the freedom to wander.

JOIN(T) Design and making of a circular detail
(Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2013)
The Tiny Pavilion Office, located at the Rondeweg in Vught, Netherlands, was designed by the dutch architecture firm Prototype studio. The building stands inside the garden of a red brick villa from the thirties. The pavilion was redesigned in order to become fully circular. The main action was the replacement of the steel structure for a completely wooden structure that can be easily disassembled. This change affected mainly the roof, as it was mainly supported by steel trusses. The redesign of the roof structure started by creating a structural element that could be repeated along the entire roof of the pavilion. This element can be assembled and disassembled, as it is composed by pieces of wood in a junction system, making it circular. A grid was defined, creating a three dimensional strong and stable wooden structure. Another important element of the building was the concrete foundation, replaced with grinded concrete, recycled from demolished buildings. After studying and redesigning the pavilion, the detail of the roof was reproduced in 1:1 scale with mostly real materials in order to understand how important are those lines that seem weightless in the paper.

F O L LO W T H E R O O F Renovation of the chinese city
Nowadays, urban public space is one of the most important issues in the debate around the Chinese cities as well as in the debate about European cities. Chinese urban culture attributes a fundamental role to the street as a place of sociality, while it knows nothing comparable to the European square as a community space.
The project was about the refurbishment of an ancient settlement in the periphery of the city of Nanjing: the Pukou district. The area was built along the backbone of the commercial Left Street and surrounded by the highway and the Zhujiashan river. The concept of public space is very hard to define. Its use has radically changed over the last years and after the exploit of the cars and the uncontrolled development of the urban slums and periphery all over the world, now the public space of the square and the street has been rediscovered and protected again, even enhanced with new functions. The project area is one of the few left pieces of the old town. Using as reference the old maps, it is possible to recognize that the left settlement was located in the eastern part outside the ancient city walls. The area is characterized by two longitudinal main streets, the so called “left street” and “the left backstreet”. The importance of the street in the morphology of the place is underlined by the fact that the traditional houses are placed along it. The project aimed at protecting and enhancing the existing heritage in a new creative way, focusing on the street as space of sociability and interactions. In the case of the new buildings, based on the reinterpretation of the traditional Chinese courtyard house, the refurbishment was carried out both by designing shared courtyards with agricultural vocation and by opening part of the courtyards, thus creating a network of commercial spaces. The idea of small public spaces spread inside the buildings was mainly driven by the strong value of street food in the Chinese culture.

LO O K I N S I D E Redesign of Kahn’s motherhouse
The re-design of a non-built project by Louis Kahn - the Dominican Motherhouse on the top of a hill in Pennsylvania increased my awareness of the inextricable relationship between architectural forms and structural elements.
DESIGN UNIT STRUCTURAL FORMS Po l i t e c n i c o d i To r i n o Prof. Michela Barosio
The project consisted in using the complex typology of the Dominican Motherhouse to design, in the same location, a contemporary monastery characterized by brick vaults. The project focused specifically on the relationship between contemporary architectural language and structural value of architecture, considering the structural scheme not only as a constructive issue, but as the basis of the meaning of architecture. The first action was to establish some rules. The main idea was to keep the complex closed towards the outside, but completely opened to the inside, through contemporary porches, that trace back to the cloysters of the old convents. Therefore, the external wall is a ventilated facade with finishing stone panels, sometimes replaced by very thin windows, that grant sufficient privacy, while also providing sufficient light. The masonry vaults are placed at the most important points of connection. The colours of the complex are mainly the grey of the stones and the white of the plaster of the internal walls, so that the red bricks of the masonry emerge quite clearly. The entrance hall is therefore a big open space, covered by the vault, where a ramp and a circular stair start to lead to a lower level. This first courtyard is surrounded by all the public accesses, to the auditorium, in the basement level of the school building, the church, the shop and the reception. The final part of this lower courtyard is enclosed by some steps, that can be used for praying outside or some events. This open-air “theatre” is partially covered by the second vault, which assures the visual connection between the public spaces and the more private ones.

D E L I C AT E LY B R U TA L I S T A lifestyle hotel for Torino
The project, through a radical but careful reinterpretation of the building and through a deep knowledge of the Turin context, seeks to maximize the soul and potential of the building.
Starting from these conditions, the project aims to create a hotel capable of enclosing the three souls of the city of today, and tomorrow: - Turin as historical city; - Turin as post-industrial city; - Turin as city of contemporary art; The project foresees a complete renovation of the facades, instead of proceeding with new coverings and predictable “make-up”, the design strategy foresees a different work: a radical restoration by subtraction. All the façades are lightened with their heavy and dated stone cladding, increasing the width of the windows without altering their design. The concrete structure of the building is left completely exposed, without cladding. A light, terracotta-coloured surface treatment is provided to protect the surface and to mitigate the radical nature of the intervention. The top floor is enriched by a series of metal pergolas, which complete the crowning of the building, currently unresolved, without changing the shape of the building. The restaurant is designed to be as open as possible to the city: its interior is treated as an extension of the public space, in particular of Piazza San Domenico, on which it directly overlooks. Inside the rooms, the materials are consistent with the approach of the rest of the hotel and are mostly natural. In particular, the “inner coat” required for energy efficiency, is made of a natural material obtained from hemp, suitably treated to be washable and resistant to wear and tear.

The complete renovation of the Pagoda Hotel, located on the headland of the Island of Ischia, in close proximity to the harbour, involves the enlargement and reorganization of the internal and external spaces with the aim of improving the offer for the clients and obtaining the fourth star. The project is defined by the hybridity between the traditions of the island and the charm of the Thai style, which will embrace the clients in a unique experience. The new layout involves the creation of new internal spaces, among which there are a new spa, a new hall with an American bar and a corner shop for the retail of local products, and a new restaurant. The latter acts as the core of the common spaces at ground floor, with two extensions, one on the external covered terrace and the other on a seaside private bay. The hotel counts also several external spaces, which will be redesigned with new canopies, such as the Thai inspired pagoda-style roof of the breakfast area and the central green courtyard with the entrance to the wellness area. External lounges, a beach bar, a pool bar and a fitness area will be realized too. All spaces, outdoor and indoor, from common areas to rooms, will have elegant and cosy furniture, with Mediterranean inspired colours, such as white and light blue, and warm materials, such as wood and fabrics, designed to provide an unforgettable experience to the clients, thanks also to the welcoming spirit of the people of the island of Ischia.
