CANTEEN, OFFICE, LIBRARY, SCHOOL, ART INSTALLATION, EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR BRANDING Interiors for public buildings and spaces require a high degree of functionality. Communications, production, recycling and sustainable requirements are taken into account during the design phase.

The challenge working on public projects, is the scale of the project and the large audience with different needs it shall serve. There are strict design specifications on quality, functionality, sustainability along with tight financial constraints. Therefore we use both strategic design experience and marketing communication skills.
co m m u n i c at i o n Corporate branding design is important in the public sector to communicate identity and profession, and the design will often communicate how a building or a room is to be used. Where to go or what to do. Where is the quiet- zone or where to meet for a quick meeting and coffee. Specific color, shape and structure also communicates on a subconscious level. Our society is based on visual codes we unconsciously follow because they are designed to communicate across language and culture. We stop at red lights and walk on green. We know the symbol for exit, lift, stairs and toilet.

Emerged from the shelled window sills we discovered the clear blue colour that once again will be the schools cooperate colour. Doors, chairs and fabrics picks up these bright shades of blue to give the school a fresh look. In combination with the warm yellow and orange tones of the school building the staff room revives new energy.

s ch oo l Oslo Cathedral School has long traditions and history. It has survived both the Black Death, a union with Sweden, two world wars and various city fires. FabLab Design took part in the restoration process of the old school building and furnishing the new extension. The school has now a big beautiful auditorium, library and cafeteria, meeting rooms and a new playground. Walking in the footsteps of former pupils such as the great writer and poet Henrik Wergeland and the math genius Nils Henrik Abel, we were inspired to combine history with modern expression.

DECOR Many famous people has attended Oslo Kathedral School and one of them was Henrik Wergeland. Few people are aware that in addition to having great writing skills, Wergeland could also handle a paintbrush. After a deep dive into the National Library’s collection of pictures we found original illustrations that Wergeland painted to accompany his political essays and articles. The illustrations have been enlarged and decorates the walls in one of the many meeting rooms. 17
