PUBLISHER FROM THE

Blink, blink again and it's JUNE! Looking back over this year, I realise it has really flown by with so much happening! June is an exciting month for our family as we have our first Scott Clan wedding for our daughter Roxy. All three of our kids grew up in Seaward Estate and it is really weird being at the next stage of having them out of the house, all over the world, and now our first BIG first! People, it is a blink from birth to weddings. No matter how hard the sleepless nights are or how hard the daily school routine is, try to enjoy it and burn those memories into your mind.

Back to this edition! Meet the Wilson family of five: two kiddies, Ariella and Lilah; parents Stephen and Kim; and a furry family member, Ozzy the Labradoodle! They recently moved to Seaward for the location and to be closer to family. Thank you for sharing your family with us in this edition. In Let's Grow Part Two, residents Tracy and Averil give us more info about indigenous plants to use in our gardens. It is really interesting to learn about what to plant, and it can also be a great family activity to get everyone out of the house and off the devices (and with it being milder weather, midday or mid-morning planting time could be perfect)!

We also get to know your local real estate agents - in case you need them! Our Security Manager, Shadrack, speaks about entering winter and being vigilant, also sharing numbers to call in case of emergency. It is also school holidays (again), and here are a few nice little DIY ideas for the kids to be kept busy, and it can be a Father's Day gift too, #2in1. And then for the fun stuff, we have included some recipes. Using Parmalat products, you can create some delicious meals - chicken wings with creamy dip and some cheesy roasted cauliflower - great for winter and all dads enjoy chicken wings too, right?!

Our family consists of Stephen, myself (Kim), our two daughters, Ariella (two and a half years old) and Lilah (eight months old), and our very large labradoodle fur baby, Ozzy.

Steve is a plastic surgeon with further specialisation in facial plastic surgery. I work in administration and marketing part-time, allowing me to spend ample time with my daughters. As a family, we love to go to the beach, walk around the Estate and adventure to one of the many play areas in the Ballito area and surrounds (mostly because this is how our two-year-old prefers to spend her afternoons!).

We also enjoy visiting one of our many family members who live in the area, including my parents, Stephen’s parents, both of my siblings and many of my cousins. This is especially exciting for us as we have lived away from Ballito for the past six years, having moved to Pretoria, Hartebeespoort Dam, Port Elizabeth and finally Knysna before coming back home.

We are Seaward newbies, having only moved in at the beginning of March. We chose to make this Estate our home because, firstly, we wanted to live in a place with ample greenery where we could enjoy afternoon walks with our girls. We love the forests, the playground (with a “jumpoline” as our daughter calls it) and the welcoming community of neighbours.

Secondly, Seaward is in an ideal location. As Steve works at Alberlito Hospital, Seaward Estates is perfect for us as it takes him less than five minutes to get to and from work. He often comes home to eat lunch with me and the girls before heading back to the hospital. He is also on call at Alberlito every second week, so it’s very easy for him to pop out quickly during the night to see a patient if needed.

We loved the value we found in Seaward Estates. It was a breeze finding a four-bedroom home that accommodates our family (and large dog). Our house is also at the end of a culde-sac right on the edge

of a large green belt, so our view makes you feel as though you’re living in a private home in the jungle.

We have long planned to move back to Ballito because it is where the majority of our family members live, and family is hugely important to us. We love that Seaward Estates puts us right in the heart of Ballito where we can easily access anything and everything we may need.

We’re so happy to be back in KZN near our families. The North Coast is very special to us as not only did I spend my schooling years living here, but Stephen and I met while working up north near Sodwana Bay 10 years ago, then we got engaged in Ballito and married at Maroupi. We are thrilled to be back home to plant our roots.

Bersama lucens (Glossy Bersama)

Size: 3 - 6 x 2 - 6 metres (wild) / up to 4 x 3 metres (garden)

Natural Habitat: Bersama is found in the warmer parts of the east and northeast. It occurs in evergreen forests, often on the margins, on steep

slopes, and among rocks, where sunshine is more accessible.

Growth form: It is a smallish tree, with a well-developed trunk and crown. Bersama is one of the prettiest of all trees. The leaves are

compound, brilliantly glossy and waxy pink when new, changing later to brownish-purple. The flowers are white, with long, narrow petals, held in vertical racemes, and the fruit are green capsules that split when mature, revealing brilliant red seeds. The fruits can be especially conspicuous, spangling the whole tree red.

Propagation: Seed

Uses: This tree deserves a prime spot in the garden and apart from its other merits, the fruit attracts birds. The growth rate is modest, at about 40 centimetres per year. First flowering occurs at about six years. Bersama likes moderate to high rainfall and a fairly warm summer. Its bark is keenly sought-after for traditional medicine to the point that the tree is becoming rare. Under controlled conditions, this tree could be grown as a very valuable commercial crop.

Bolusanthus speciosus

(Tree Wistaria or Vanwykshout)

Size: 4 - 9 x 2 - 5 metres (wild) / up to 8 x 4 metres (garden

Natural Habitat: Bolusanthus is found naturally in Zululand, as well as in the warmer and drier parts of the far north and east of the country.

Growth Form: This tree grows erect and slender, with a narrow crown, although its branches sometimes droop. Older specimens develop neatly fissured bark. The flowers are mauve and pea-shaped, making a wonderful display in spring, and the leaves are a favourite of baboons. The tree is briefly deciduous in late winter.

Propagation: Seed.

Uses: This tree is widely cultivated,

and thrives in a variety of environments. The ideal is a hot summer with fairly low rainfall, but it can cope with anything except a cool, wet summer. It tolerates moderate frost, growing well in Gauteng, for example. Bolusanthus is greatly recommended

as a form and flowering tree. It is often evergreen in cultivation. Growth is fairly rapid, about 80 centimetres per year. The graceful shape, typical of a mature tree, appears at about four years, and first flowering follows soon afterwards.

Burchellia bubalina (Wild Pomegranate)

This small-sized, evergreen tree grows to 2,5 x 1,5 metres. It is a slow-growing, attractive, ornamental scrub that tolerates partial shade but needs protection from cold winter winds, which is not an issue here in our area. The tubular, orange flowers occur in spring and summer and attract birds like sunbirds, bulbuls, starlings, barbets and mousebirds as well as butterflies as they

produce copious nectar and are edible.

It is suitable for containers as it has non-aggressive roots. Traditionally, the roots are added to body

washes and used to prepare a love charm.

Named for William John Burchell (1782 to 1863), an English explorer, naturalist, traveller, artist

and author. He worked at Kew Gardens. In 1810, he travelled to Cape Town and collected 50 000 specimens which he took back to the UK. His name is also used in Burchell’s zebra and Burchell’s coucal.

Una van Jaarsveldt Property Practitioner

Hello fabulous friends! I'm Una, which means 'one' and, true to my name, I'm one-of-a-kind!

My adventure started at the Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg), where I was knee-deep in test tubes and equations as I pursued a BSc in Chemistry and Mathematics.

Here’s the twist: Marc Anthony once said, "If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life." That hit home! So, I swapped formulas for floor plans and embarked on a thrilling real estate journey. It all kicked off at Lew Geffen Sotheby's, then onto Premier Real Estate, collecting "Best

Agent of the Year" awards like they were going out of style. I then rocked RE/MAX with my team, scooping up accolades such as 'Agent of the Month' and 'Team of the Year' faster than you can say 'sold!'

In March 2021, my dream took root in the form of establishing Property Matchmaker Real Estate Agency. Fast forward to 2024, and we've joined the Keller Williams Family, bringing our unique flair to an already fantastic lineup.

As your go-to Property Matchmaker, my ultimate joy is finding that perfect property that ticks all your boxes. From our first handshake (or high-five!) to closing the deal, I’m all about building lasting friendships and providing

top-notch service. When you work with us, it's not just business, it's like finding your real estate BFF.

Property Matchmaker has access to all the estates in and around the Dolphin Coast and is eagerly waiting to match you with your dream home!

So what are you waiting for? Let’s make magic happen together.
