Inspired by Historia Naturalis Palmarum (The History of Palms), a illustrated folio publication by Karl Friedrich von Martius issued in three volumes between 1823-1850. This catalog is noteworthy because of its focus on a single plant group, palms, and that the illustrations are placed in the setting of the Brazilian landscape of that time. In creating Island Palms, many illustrations in the book were referenced to tell the story of these various Brazilian palms and the landscape from which they are indigenous. Printed on a linen/cotton canvas, the slubs in the ground cloth complement the beautiful rendering of Island Palms.

An architectural framework pulled directly from 17th century formal french garden designs is the basis for Jardinage. Flora, interlaced with garden tracery, was developed from botanical color plates in the New York Botanical Garden’s library and is illustrated in a two-dimensional style associated with textiles from the Arts and Crafts movement in decorative art. Printed on a lustrious linen satin, Jardinage is colored with the stronger shade in the motif area to convey a new and fresh approach for this design.

Musa paradisiaca is the scientific name for the hybrid species that most popular (edible) bananas are cultivated from, hence we shortened the name to Musa Paradis. Spectacularly rendered in the artists expressive hand, the drawing interprets classical botanical etchings of banana plants through a modern lens. Color charcoal captures the artists original drawing on a tumbled two-tone washed linen ground. Colors Black Pearl, Aqua Citrine and Persimmon, have the mesmerizing effect of splattered color tones moving behind as part of the captivating banana plant.
