HYDE COLLECTION

OVERVIEW

From North Africa to Greece, the Hyde collection is a tour of textures, saturated colourways, and creative interpretations. Following the footsteps of ancient artisans and craftspeople — Moroccan bead-workers, Tunisian textile-makers, and Egyptian architects — Hyde bridges the gap between traditional artistry and modern design. It’s also a study in contrasts, beginning with a deep, dark colourway that bleeds into a palette that’s bright with personality. Right angles and soft curves, masculine and feminine, earthly and the divine… Hyde embraces its dualities and delights with newfound depth and dimension. And the collection is rich with new applications, too: chalky rotary prints on foiled grounds, grasscloth embroidered with raffia, hand-sewn seed beading… There’s much to be explored — and more to fall in love with.

CHENINI: DUNE, FOREST, TWINKLE & MIDNIGHT.

CHENINI

Perched high on a hilltop ridge in southern Tunisia, the village of Chenini was once used as a fortified granary by nomadic Berbers. Inspired by the intricately woven, Bakhnoug wool wedding shawls worn by its people, each one hand-woven to express declarations of belonging and faith, as well as messages of goodwill and hope. These shawls flaunt spectacular geometric and abstract motifs. Our Chenini wallcovering is an homage to these textile masterpieces, and features like shapes embroidered with naturally dyed raffia across a grasscloth ground.

HESIONE: CHARCOAL, POMEGRANATE, TWINKLE, FOREST, MIDNIGHT & PARCHMENT

HESIONE

Named after the princess of Troy, who Hercules saves from the wrath of Poseidon’s deadly sea monster, Hesione is a dramatic wallpaper that artfully depicts her kidnapping and rescue as a pawn in the Trojan War. Implementing a technique called rotary printing, in which a giant cylinder is engraved with the original design’s negative before being dipped into a chalky ink and rolled onto the nonwoven paper, the mythical story arch unfolds line by line. But rather than being immortalised in marble, it’s as if each figure has been carved out of ink, allowing the golden foil ground underneath to shine through.

MAMOUNIA

Inspired by a collection of hand-carved, wooden boxes with intricate inlays of bone and mother of pearl, and the artisanal tilework at La Mamounia hotel in Marrakesh that adorns its keyhole arches and burbling fountains, this mosaic-like wallcovering abstracts these stunning patterns to beautiful effect. The product of rotary printing on a fibrous, nonwoven paper, the repeat is at once timeless and wildly modern, while the coordinating colourways — Midnight, Twinkle, Forest and Pomegranate — are the perfect alchemy for the foil ground.

TENDRIL

Acanthus leaves have long been an ornamental element in Roman architecture and interior design, the earliest known example being the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae (450-420 BC). Carved into stone throughout ancient Greece, particularly in Corinthian columns and friezes, and flowering from the crowns of great emperors, Tendril is a modern take on the vining motif.

Backed in foil and rotary printed, this perennial wallcovering’s large-scale repeat coordinates well throughout the Hyde collection.

ACANTHUS

Identical to the Tendril wallcovering in terms of its leafy repeat, this multipurpose linen fabric is embroidered with metallic threads and comes in 3 organic colourways.

ACANTHUS: COBALT, COPPER & FOREST

ZIGGY

Harnessing the rainbow of colours that converge at Souk Semmarine in Marrakech — the rows of vibrantly dyed babouches, the kaleidoscope of spices — and in a playful nod to the abstract shapes that emerge from traditional Moroccan weaving techniques, Ziggy amplifies the bright side of this collection. Printed on a grasscloth ground for organic texture, this whimsical wallcovering’s pattern was originally created with cuts of construction paper that were glued to the ground. Softened geometrics materialised, some that appear imperfectly perfect courtesy of the hand-cuts.

ZIG ZAG EMBROIDERY

Identical to Ziggy wallcovering in terms of its geometric repeat and dynamic colourway, Zig Zag is a natural embroidered linen that’s just the thing for making a playful drapery statement or adding pops of colour across coordinating cushions.

MENKAURE

Menkaure is a luxurious, printed linen fabric for upholstery and drapery that comes in four current colourways. A nod to the peaks of the Egyptian pyramids and the hieroglyphics carved within, Menkaure is named after the ancient Egyptian pharaoh of the fourth dynasty whose pyramid is the smallest of the three main Pyramids of Giza. The pattern boasts a large, geometric pattern that draws the eye in. As the pattern was originally drawn in ink, and saturated with water before being turned into a digital print. There’s a softness to its shapes that makes this multipurpose fabric highly liveable.

FELIX

A collaboration with Lala Curio, a Hong Kong-based home decor brand that revives ancient artisanship for modern-yet-timeless interiors, this is The Vale’s first, truly bespoke wallcovering — and our first foray into Surrealism.

Koi fish encapsulated in bubbles, children in school-uniform building a sand pyramid, a monkey perched atop a slice of grapefruit blowing bubbles from a conch shell, a llama floating away on a bundle of balloons… The illogically uplifting seascape was inspired by the work of collage artists Mohanad Shuraideh and Joe Webb, and is meant to spark immense joy. Hand-painted on pink Thai silk before being hand-embroidered and beaded for dimension and depth, each Lala Curio for The Vale panel is exclusively made-to-order.
