Moments

Precious moments spent with her mother in her child hood, when her mother wove magic with her dexterous fingers, and sowed purses and artifacts out of bandhani to gift to friends and family gave rise to MOMENTS. Riona Biyani runs a thriving business where she freely expresses her creativity making beautiful and intriguing items that you can buy to gift your loved ones, or buy to decorate your home to make it look prettier.

The ambitious Riona started earning her living at the age of 13. Success always met all that she did.

“There are no short cuts. You really have to make sure you have to work hard and then nobody stops you.” Ambitious she may be;

Face Mag | 25 extremely lucky to have great family support. My kids are very understanding. I cut off from everything when I am at home. One of the reasons I have 2 phones. My kids are the future of tomorrow. I need to give them the right culture now.” Although an independent and strong individual that she is, woman’s liberation or feminism as an ideology is not what she lives by. When at work Riona is unstoppable. I wondered what she further saw for herself. However, it does not blind her to the needs of her family. Riona has created a beautiful work life balance for herself. Her passion for her work remains at MOMENTS when done with the day at work, only to spend marvelous Moments at home with her 2 children and her very accommodating husband. She is all praise for them. “I am lucky to have a great partner, “Well I intend doing some good work for the next 4 or 5 years, and then go and settle down somewhere in a quiet and tranquil place. And yes go back to studying and learning.” Deeply Spiritual, the lovely Riona has a terrific regime for herself. She wakes up at 3.20 and prays for an hour and a half. Goes to the gym. Has her vegan protein shake. Then ofcourse spends time with her family before she starts her day at MOMENTS. After a hard day’s work Riona wants only to go back home, put her feet up on the couch, be surrounded by her husband and 2 delightful children and soak it all in. This rejuvenates those tired muscles and she is all set the next day to spend meaningful Moments at MOMENTS.

While studying psychology a friend suggested she join an interior designing course. She had time on hand and so conceded. There was no looking back. Poonam Mehta then went on to study Masters in London. A passion for interiors, a degree in hand, and rich Marwari parents, it all looked rosy. However, Poonam chose the hard way. She decided to work with other interior decorators. To her it was the only best way to garner experience.

Face Mag | 28 She chose the best…Panti and Talati; however, it took a call to Akash Mehta to confirm if it was the right choice. He was a friend then, the best in lighting design and owned a store that sold Italian artifacts. Poonam travelled to Mumbai, and like every other girl who leaves home and works from another town experienced the hardships. Yatin Patel another friend made an offer to take up

an assignment in Chennai whilst giving her the liberty to function in Mumbai also. How could Poonam resist? Whilst building the mall on the lines of a small town called Burgamo in Itally, cupid struck. Akash her friend was called in to help with the lighting. Their coffee meetings led to an engagement and then a quick marriage leaving of course her boss in Mumbai stunned. Moving to Poona was a

big step and starting Am Pm even bigger. 6.5 years the leap of faith yielded results. AmPm is a quirky way of saying we are round the clock. I wondered, what is the design they follow?

“We are truly service providers. We give the client exactly what he wants. There is no pattern no concept etc. we do minimalistic, dramatic, we do classic and that is what keeps us excited.”

“What we do different with our projects is the level of detailing in terms of luxury. Obviously we take in what the client gives and what he wants…we just give the little touch of detailing. We look at a home that stays at least 30 years. We don’t follow a trend.”

So what happens when you get a difficult customer? Someone you would have to explain to that what he or she is saying may just not suit the décor? “Psychology helps….so how I overcome with my psychology. I give the customer suggestions but whilst doing so I give them feeling that he or she has come up with the suggestions.”

“Decorating homes is more of a challenge than decorating commercials”, says Poonam. When decorating a home one has to bear in mind the choices of the members of the home. With a commercial area one is interacting with just the CEO. In the last 6.5 years Am Pm have worked with a variety of clients.

They have besides homes and commercial areas decorated fashion studios, men’s wear fashion stores in many parts of India- Delhi, Bangalore and ofcourse Pune. They don’t mind going international also. They designed a restaurant in Norway and have done some work in China. I was now browsing through their coffee table book.

The book is used mostly as a presentation to the clients. I like the idea and what I saw in the book. Firstly, the book was tastefully done. ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ holds true here. One needed no explanation nor an assurance of what Am Pm can offer its customers as interior decorators.

Face Mag | 34 From their signature design AmPm designed by Akash Mehta, to the clock that depicts 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and switches of at sunset, I marveled at their ideas. The Hyundai show room in Hadapsar is another marvel, especially when having to work with norms strictly laid down by their policy. However, the clever couple did not limit themselves, yet worked within boundaries earning the accolades of the Head of Hyundai who said that Hyundai would use their idea at all

Hyundai showrooms. At Hyundai you are not allowed to change the flooring, the ceiling, and one has to have a lot of light in every box that showcases the car. Imagine the limitations that Poonam and Akash Mehta had to work with. “We added a staircase which was lit up…gave it a shade of light. You have to use a 1000 Lux. That is a lot of light; we reduced the light by 8 times. We focused the light only on the car and removed it from everywhere else. Just the

car has about 1000 Lux…so when you open the door about 30 percent of the car is lit. And everywhere else the spill is used so you are actually saving energy…sustainability” explained Akash.

“We focus a lot on Uber Luxury. Uber luxury does not mean you buy a Fendi, or a Versace. It is about you. So we create a crest for the house, and every crest goes on the furniture, on your tapestry etc. you become a brand, and that is what we do, instead of buying a Fendi, or a Versace.

Poonam and Akash are going back to the days of aristocracy where every item in your home had your mark! From tapestry to crockery to clothes etc. It is the experience that counts.

This is Uber Luxury for you! Akash and Poonam Mehata are very approachable. It is their ingrained culture stemming from families that had no pretense about themselves!

And it is this culture that keeps them ticking round the clock!

There was no way I was going to do a telephonic or send a questionnaire to Sameer Belvalkar. One of the best and fashion photographers and also an expensive in the country; and yes worthy of his work, Sameer Belvalkar and I met at the J.W Marriot late afternoon. We broke the ice over a cup of coffee. I rattled on letting him know who I am. 16 years in the profession here was a man completely down to earth, unabashed as he spoke without mincing words, and honestly. He traversed the path to be where he is.

Sameer Belvalkar

A wasted year in commerce, a degree in organic chemistry, a failed attempt at an entrance exam for Mass Communication, and then an MBA, he followed his heart and most importantly his friends to finally realize his dreams of being one of the best photographers. Photography happened when his little sister picked up a DSLR lying at home and went up to the ‘tekdi’ a hillock

with her dog to click photos. Extreme criticism from Sameer of how bad her pictures were (there was an ulterior motive) led her to giving up the DSLR which he happily took for himself to prove to her how much better he is ....

‘‘Sibling Rivalry led him to become one of the best Photographers in the country.’’

Winning over the little sister was not the goal. The camera became his best friend. It travelled with him where ever he went. Sameer Belvalkar clicked relentlessly.

He had neither the time not the money to go through a formal training. He self- taught himself by reading, watching tutorials, and assisting a photographer for 6 months.

Face Mag | 69 He became a press photographer shooting page 3 parties, open man holes, fallen down trees etc. He never lost an opportunity to click pictures. His passion ruled. He became his own best critic.

“I love the medium, the process of shooting, adding creativity to it. Then getting it developed, printed and not even knowing what I am going to get. The whole thrill of the entire process is far more than what I actually shoot.” He having an artistic bent of mind, and love for photography actually led him to leave a job of Rs.13,000 at a time when he really needed the money.

“Everything I have done has been via my gut feeling. My whole career is gut feeling, and also the abilty to take the risk even if it was giving up Rs.13,000. Giving that up for a middle class family was a big thing. I had to take this leap of faith and let go of one thing for the other thing to work out for me. I still had my academics in place, and am a street survivor; so let’s take a chance, I told myself!

The crucial question now played on my mind. I wanted to know more about the media world, the many young ones aching to become models and actors, especially young girls; the many boys who are trying their hands at photography. What did he have to say of the existing culture? “It’s a world of deception!”

“With everyone wanting to look beautiful, that is how lots of my biz runs; I take great pride in the fact that I can make them look good. Young aspiring models want to look good with flawless skin even if they don’t have it. It’s a make believe world with filters and apps.

Media with its technology has done this to the culture out there.” What about you? Do you edit a lot?

“NO! I edit the least! Say 5 percent! 90 percent of my work is minimalistic. It is about using less light, less makeup, hairstyling and the place where I shoot. 90 percent of the job is done on the screen. One has to decide whether you want to be a photographer, or a photo editor.”

“As a photographer I work with my client’s psyche, confidence and selfesteem. I flatter a little. I flirt a little. So when they start feeling good about themselves the photographs are only a by-product. My clients need to look 30 to 40 percent better than what they look in real life. I give them that.”

It is the digital age and most of the so called photographers take to editing the photos.

What do you have to say to that? “My message to the young aspiring photographers is decide whether you want to be a photographer or a photo editor. There is nothing wrong in being photo editors, but you cannot pose as a photographer and wanting to be a photographer if you end up editing 90 percent of your work. 90 percent of your job is done on the screen.”

“My first instinct was to become a wild life photographer. In touch with nature and animals. I also realized I need to earn money. Wild life photography does not pay you much. It is my retirement plan. I had gone with my pictures to Nat geo; however, they said their photographers come with 50 years of experience.”

To satisfy his creative side Sameer packs up on and off and goes off to the jungles to absorb the wild life on his very expensive lenses bought specially for this event.

Her calling started at the age of 12 when she began playing basketball in class 7. It took her to the Nationals. Netball happened later in college at the camp of CWG 2010. Prachi Tehlan was the captain of the team for 4 years where the team won their first medal in the South Asian Beach Games 2011. This certainly was an achievement that left her feeling proud and worthy.

Her Nani and mother were both active in sports and they were her inspiration. Priyanka chopra she says with her terrific journey in the film industry has left a lasting impress.

Prachi Tehlan started her journey with Diya Aur Baati Hum on Star Plus which was followed by Ikyawaan. Television is close to her heart as it gave her a learning curve.

Her roots she says she will never forget. However, she sees herself doing films and web series. So was she working on any films presently?

“The focus now is on the promotions of the film Mamangam, one of the biggest projects done by me, which is releasing on the 21st of November 2019. Preparation for the release of my Telugu film Trishanku is also on.”

I wanted to know which of the cultures did she prefer, the television or the film industry? She said, “The Film industry is more creative. Every scene is practiced and rehearsed, beautifully designed, created and framed.”

In all her busy schedule Prachi Tehlan makes time to play basketball whenever she gets the time. Must say it is very commendable.

“I love playing sports- Basketball, swimming, squash and badminton. Functional training and a good work out is a part of my regime. I love dancing … I think I need to dance more often.”

Being an athlete she feels it is necessary for all to keep a regime to stay fit through out.

“One hour of any physical workout of your interest is very important in a day. It will keep you happy, make you feel more positive thus being more productive at work. Have 2 glasses of hot water waking up and 7-8 glasses in a day. It will help your skin glow.”

Every actor brings his/her style to the screen. I was curious to know hers! “Hands on experience,” she said. Prachis is a director’s actor and learnt along the way in front of the camera.

Roles in Aarzoo in Diya aur Baaati Hum, Susheel in Ikyawann and Unnimaya in Mamankam are responsible for her growth as an individual and as an actor. Any challenging role, adrenaline pumping is what she is waiting for to experiment with.

“I don't feel I am an actor who is very restrictive. I am fairly versatile and the advantage of being a director's actor helps too!” According to her a Positive Attitude in all situations always works the best to achieve your goals. At a very young age Prachi Tehlan has achieved much success. I wanted to know her success mantra. HOW! Hardwork, Opportunity, Willpower.

My hardwork, sincerity, and talent have yielded fruits. I am a product of hardwork, will power and destiny.

“There is absolutely no shortcuts in life. Follow your passion, work towards it. What life offers you is for the best! There is nothing known as overnight success. Just stay strong, focus of yourself, groom yourself and remember you are your best friend.” Is Prachi Tehlan’s message to the youth of today.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, formerly known

deriving from Indian traditional architecture.

The building, designed by the British architect

CULTURE

O.ne of the main reasons for India’s rich culture has been the influence of the varied settlements here over the centuries. Being the fertile land full of opportunities, Indian art, craft, labor, climate, resources – living and non living were used to its maximum potential.

And these rulers left behind a reminiscent of their culture on ours in architectural wealth. Temple architecture, one India is known worldwide for is spread across almost all regions. Nagara or the Northern style, Vesara or Mixed style Architecture which evolved in the state of Karnataka during the medieval centuries and combines

both the Dravida and the Nagara architectural styles. Dravida or the Southern style, primarily consisting of pyramid shaped temples called Kovils (a Tamil word). The Mughal architectural style is a unique blend of Islamic, Persian and Indian styles. This era left behind some of our most prominent tourist locations.

Sikh architecture is all about beautiful curves and straight lines. Most prevalent is the vernacular style which is based on traditional building methods with local craftsmenship.

Hawa Mahal is a palace in Jaipur, India. Made with the red and pink sandstone, the palace sits on the edge of the City Palace, Jaipur, and extends to the Zenana, or women's chambers. The structure was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh.

Hawa mahal has 953 small windows (Jharokas), they were built to keep the wind blowing inside the palace. It was a summer retreat for many Rajputs families during olden times.

A treat for the tastebuds, Indian cuisine consists of herbs and spices that leave you craving for more.

And contrary to global beliefs, it is not a spicy cuisine. Only certain regions indulge in spice however they too have their mild options. From the Mughal influence in the North to the Portugal taste in the West,

The Oriental sway on the Eastern Belt, to the Native American and West African touches in the Southern Ports.
