The People Behind The Business Jools and Jane Chaffer. Co-Founders of dizzy: Support for Diabetes dizzy: Support 4 Diabetes founders, husband and wife team Jools and Jane Chaffer, dizzy is a personal mission to raise awareness of a disease, which affects millions of Britons every single day. And the couple knows first hand what it means to have the disease. Jane has lived with Type 1 diabetes for more than 28 years. It was her experience that inspired the creation of the South Coast-based Social Enterprise in 2005. As Jools explains, “I could see first hand that the profile of diabetes as a major disease was very low. Most people had no idea who it affects, the impact it has on people’s lives, how those diagnosed can learn to deal with it and just how widespread it is. It’s an illness which affects over three million people in the UK, plus around half a million who don’t even realise they have it! We felt driven to change that lack of knowledge. With my 25-year background in retail, and business, a chain of dizzy stores seemed an obvious foundation for our mission.” Eight-plus years on from opening the first store in East Preston, dizzy now has three more outlets and also has its thriving headquarters in the West Sussex coastal town of Littlehampton. The stores are far from the stereotypical charity shop image as you can imagine – no whiff of mothballs, chipped china or dog-eared paperbacks. dizzy stores are light, bright and branded. Jools comments, “Although we mainly sell second-hand goods, there is nothing second class about what we do. We think of ourselves as top-notch recyclers! Goods are donated, given a new home and the proceeds of the sales are passed on to a very worthy initiative.” The Social Enterprise now has a combined total of way over 100 people on board, working hard to spread the dizzy message! But their efforts go far beyond the work in the stores – dizzy undertakes a vast range of other activities to fulfil its aim of raising awareness, offering support and providing education of diabetes and has a very active social media presence. He adds, “Our stores, as well as support groups, educational programmes, peer-to-peer sessions, awareness days, leaflets and networking are essential for improving education of what diabetes is and highlight other initiatives that can help all of us.

Perhaps not surprisingly, dizzy’s activities and the way it goes about its “mission” has already gained widespread recognition. This has included a raft of awards in both the Business and Charity sectors. But dizzy is not complacent. As Jane Chaffer says, “We actively try and work with other Community Groups, Social Enterprises and Charities. I can’t wait to work on new projects and other exciting initiatives that are in the ‘pipeline’ for 2014 and beyond!” Mr. Jools Chaffer FRSA Chief Executive Officer Dizzy HQ : 01903 300200 email(s): jools@dizzy.org..uk or jane@dizzy.org.uk Website(s) : dizzy.org.uk ‘dizzy: Support for Diabetes’ and the soon to be launched d-beatz.org.uk ‘Supporting Young People with Diabetes’

Working Well... Message from Bob Smytherman - The Worshipful Mayor of Worthing aka #CoolMayor It has been an incredible honour to have been elected as Mayor of the Borough of Worthing for 2013-14 in May this year.

Worthing has also always been important to me as I was born and grew up locally and worked here all my working life and currently represent the historic village of Tarring in the heart of Worthing where I spent many happy childhood memories with my grandmother. I went to St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary school and currently attend St Mary’s of the Angels Parish church where I am a Minister of the Eucharist and our Parish Priest Father Chris Benyon is my Mayor’s Chaplain for my year of office. The ‘Smytherman’ family moved to Worthing in West Sussex from a small village called Marden in Kent over 200 years ago and what I love most about West Sussex is being so close to the sea and the countryside both within easy walking distance from my home. I am very much enjoying working Best of Worthing along with business and community groups to raise the profile of Worthing that has bucked the national trend in a recent report by the Office for National Statistics and championing everything that is great in our town. Worthing residents and businesses play an important role in the life of West Sussex and it is great to live, work and visit. Some of the highlights this year to far have included Worthing hosting the World Blind Bowls championship and the English Bowls Association celebration of 40 years coming to the town as well as meeting countless volunteers doing amazing work for other people to enhance the quality of life for so many people in our area.
