ahmed khalil . NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN PROPERTY By Nancy Duckels

Ahmed Khalil, of the Khalil Property Group, is excited to bring his new Airbnb partnership venture to the Brighton and Hove property market. The new venture helps people to get their property into the Airbnb market. From interior design services that get the property looking great, management services that take care of guest maintenance, to investing into the property to really maximise potential - Ahmed’s new Airbnb business has it covered. Ahmed’s company, the Khalil Property Group, already performs a range of services within the property industry. Now Ahmed is excited to work in this exciting new Airbnb market: “I’m always thinking about what’s new and different…and this is a great opportunity for people.” Ahmed has worked in the Brighton and Hove property market since 2007. The Khalil Property Group began as an online agency, and has grown to include busy offices in both Brighton and Hove. Ahmed provides thriving letting agency services, a rental guarantee scheme and property maintenance services. Ahmed says: “The business has grown organically. It started from the ground up. It’s been a fantastic journey.” After qualifying in business law, Ahmed has always had a passion for the business of property. He says that it’s working with people in the property industry that drives him: “It’s a different relationship, it’s not just a customer and a client

relationship. People want to know that you will be there for them.” For Ahmed, customer service is crucial: “It’s all about people…I’ve always believed in customer focus, customer service - develop a good relationship with your clients, always deliver what you say you will deliver.” Now Ahmed is excited to launch the next arm of his business - the Airbnb services. Ahmed is keen to work with people who have a property that they want to get onto the short-term rental market. He says that there is a real demand for Airbnb places to stay in the city: “The need for Airbnb and temporary accommodation is growing - it’s not just attracting the holiday-maker but people from all different backgrounds, in different circumstances.” Husband and father of three Ahmed loves living and working in Brighton. He laughs as he says that he came straight here from Egypt in 2004 and never left: “Brighton is such a fantastic city. I’ve never lived anywhere else here - it just clicked. I didn’t need to try anywhere else!” Ahmed Khalil is excited to continue business in the Brighton and Hove property market, through lettings and his new Airbnb venture. He tells me that Brighton is a special place to live and work: “What I like about Brighton is that it’s cosmopolitan and it’s different. It’s a happy city. There’s life in Brighton.”

filletsfishandchips.co.uk

Located on Lewes Road in Brighton, Fillets is a shiny beacon of hope for those craving a large portion of the quintessential British classic, fish and chips. As you would expect from a seaside city, Brighton and Hove is literally crawling with similar establishments and trying to decipher which ones are worth a visit to satisfy your deep fried cravings can be a minefield. I’d heard great things about Fillets, so when I was invited to sample the delights on offer by owner Nicep, I couldn’t wait to get stuck into some battered loveliness. First impressions, the premises are so clean they sparkle, which is something most of us look out for when buying a takeaway. However, when ordering through a delivery app, it’s impossible to know the cleanliness level of where your takeaway originates. Rest assured, that isn’t an issue here. I ordered a large cod and chips which was cooked fresh. I liked the fact there wasn’t loads of food sitting in the display as quite often it goes soggy and can look a little unappetising. Onto the important part, what was the food like? I can honestly say I’ve never seen such a huge piece of battered cod, it was enormous, so big in fact I had to share it and it wouldn’t fit onto my dinner plate when I got home. The chips were golden and cooked to perfection and again the portion was ridiculously large. I’d definitely order again. You can get delivery through Uber Eats and aside from fish and chips you can also choose burgers, sausages, chicken, pies, drinks and a vast array of sides. ISSUE ONE | MAR 2022

Discover chatted to Tim Richardson, proprietor of Taboo and reality star of accompanying Channel 4 series, A Very British Sex Shop. The documentary chronicled the lives of Tim and his family, while giving viewers a unique look into the sex lives of the UK population. How did being on the TV show affect your business and family life? As far as the business was concerned it was phenomenal. The show was repeated every year since its release and we were ready to start filming a second series but then went into lock-down the week we were supposed to begin recording. The show was also repeated again during the first week of lock-down, so this helped massively with online sales. Footfall into the shop also increased, due to travel restrictions people weren’t going abroad, so consequently loads more people visited Brighton. We fondly call our fans TV tourists, they’ve seen the show and come into the shop and expect us all to be there, which obviously we’re not. Overall the show in terms of business has been incredible for us.

We were sceptical initially in terms of how we would be portrayed as we know things can happen in the editing room and we didn’t want to be shown in a bad light, so that was one of the stipulations for us doing the show. We saw the show the week before it went out, so we knew what to expect and we were very relieved and pleased with the final result. The only negative comments were directed at me because some people assumed I’d lured my family into this dark underbelly of the sex industry, which isn’t true. Are there still plans to do another show? I don’t think there will be now as it was three years ago. Also, we have decided to quit while we’re ahead and I don’t think we’d do another one. Even though it was very good for the business and we are really grateful for the first series, we’ve all moved on with our lives. My daughter has qualified as a solicitor, so I know she definitely wouldn’t take part. The nature of reality TV has changed so much over the years and producers seem to want as much drama and controversy as possible, and that’s just not for us.

Tell me about the room you’ve just designed for Hotel Pelirocco? Another part of my business is called Brighton Dungeon.com, which is an Airbnb BDSM dungeon. We’ve been running that business for three years now. I wanted to expand while staying in the adult sector. It’s been really successful and we’ve recently opened our second one. Essentially they are kinky Airbnbs. On the basis of that, the owner of Hotel Pelirocco approached us and asked if we’d like to create a kinky themed room for them, they didn’t want the room to be too full on, so we created the room as an introduction to kink so we didn’t make guests feel uncomfortable. We are really pleased with the final result. Any advice for a flagging relationship? Come and visit our shops! Be open minded in your sex life, don’t be afraid to consensually experiment. Sometimes relationships can get boring, a bit like eating curry every night, sometimes you have to go out together and eat cheeseburgers.

pod wellness . A NEW EXPERIENCE MASSAGE STUDIO By Nancy Duckels

What do you think of when you think of massage chairs? Depressing-looking things in motorway service stations, perhaps? Pod Wellness aims to change that. It’s a new concept in massage facilities - a massage studio equipped with the very latest in massage chair technology. The “pods” are state of the art massage chairs that incorporate multiple roller and air bag technology. They have a range of specialist programmes designed to ease tension, work stress areas or simply relax you - whatever it is that you’re after. I paid a visit to their beautiful massage studio, nestled in the historic Brighton Lanes. Pod Wellness have a website that you can book a slot through but they also encourage walk-ins. A Pod Wellness massage can be as quick as twenty minutes, for as little as £20.00. The same way that we pop into the high street for a cup of coffee, we can pop in for a massage. “Our whole goal of what we are trying to create is this concept of high-street well-being. So the idea that you can access a well-being offer that is both physically and mentally beneficial, but at the same time is super convenient and affordable,” says Alex Collinson, founder of Pod Wellness. For Alex, the customer’s experience is “a key component of what we do…despite being affordable, you can still make that experience stellar and outstanding. We do everything for the customer,

they don’t have to press any buttons. Once the headphones are on and the eye mask, they should just be able to completely relax.” And relax I do! After consulting with one of Alex’s friendly team, I chose two programmes - first, the ‘SCRUFF’ programme that targets the neck and shoulders and second, the ‘Elevate” programme that’s a full body deep tissue massage, designed to ease tension and uplift body and mind. The results were fantastic - combined with the sound-cancelling headphones playing meditative music and an LED eye mask, it was truly an immersive experience. I felt that I was not in a massage chair in Brighton, but in a massage cocoon in Pod Land. The SCRUFF programme really felt like it was working on my knots, tension and niggly bits. The Elevate programme was perfect to wind me down afterwards but simultaneously uplifting and invigorating. I left feeling rejuvenated, and remembering something that Alex had told me: “the feedback that we have - people feel physically and mentally transformed after the experience.” I couldn’t agree more. I know that I’ll definitely be back to feel transformed again. Discover Brighton readers can enjoy 25% a standard twenty minute massage by going to podmassage.co.uk and entering code DISM22 when booking.

fighting fit . GET HEALTHY WITH SOL GILBERT By Nancy Duckels

Sol Gilbert, owner of Ultimate Training and allaround fitness and nutrition expert, says that now is the time to take charge of your fitness destiny: “when we can master our own body, rather than our bodies dictating how we’re gonna look and how we’re gonna feel…we’re in control about what we can do.” Sol, who has over twenty years experience in the fitness industry, has a range of services designed to help customers achieve their fitness goals. Whether it be in one of his Underground Gym locations or via the range of coaching services that he provides, Sol is excited to help people live better and be healthier. For Sol, it’s all about giving customers the information that they need to change their own lives through exercise and nutrition, tailored to every client’s individual needs. Sol knows that every client has a different story: “there might be something that’s got you to this point where you don’t feel particularly happy about yourself - or you do feel happy about yourself, you feel great, but you just want to get fit!” But it’s all about setting a series of realistic, achievable short-term goals, for Sol. Taking small steps to create big change - whether that’s losing fat, building muscle, whatever that individual health journey looks like: “health is the key metric that I really focus on. Making sure that you sleep better, feel better, your body performs better once we get those things together, everything else

just slots into place.” Sol is the architect of the 21-Day-Cleanse Programme, a nutrition and exercise programme that uses elimination protocols to both detox and sculpt the body. Participants join group fitness sessions (on Zoom or in person) and stay motivated and engaged through daily contact with Sol, his team and the fellow programme members. Participants can join whether they are Brighton-based or from their living rooms around the country. Former combat fighter Sol developed the 21 Day Cleanse out of years of professional experience and personal research. He spent years training as a MMA fighter, and is also a Level 4 nutritional coach. Despite the impressive business that he has built, it’s important for Sol to be with customers, where the action is: “I love coaching people. I like being amongst it - I want to be on the gym floor, personal training people, seeing transformations, helping transformations, empowering people through fitness and nutrition.” Sol is offering Discover Brighton readers an exclusive opportunity - 20% off the 21 day cleanse and a free t-shirt, if you use the exclusive Discover Brighton code. A Hidden Gem

facebook.com/Thevillagekemptown/ Le Village is a one of the many LGBTQ+ venues on bustling St James’s Street, it regularly hosts some of the UKs top drag performers and boasts possibly the most colourful, covered outdoor space in the area. Word has it, you can also find the most delicious and affordable Thai food there too, so I decided to check it out. The food is cooked fresh every evening from 5pm until 9.30pm (from midday on Fridays and Saturdays) by husband and wife chef team, Andy and Tai. Their family owns a very successful restaurant in Thailand, so I knew I was in for a treat. I ordered the mixed platter to start, which is a little bit of everything. Spring rolls, Thai fishcakes, chicken satay, vegetable tempura, prawn crackers, battered king prawns with sweet chilli and plum sauce. All cooked on point and absolutely delicious. The main event was pretty special.I ordered Pla Lad Pric, which in layman’s terms (pardon the pun) is a deep fried Seabass fillet with a sweet chilli and pineapple sauce. It arrived in a fish shaped dish with a love heart shaped mound of sticky rice. Overall, an explosion of colours, flavours and textures, a real assault on the senses in the best way. The dish is slightly spicy with crispy, flaky fish with the sweetness of the pineapple cutting through the chilli. This place is definitely worth a visit, I have sampled many Thai restaurants in the city and this is up there with the best. ISSUE ONE | MAR 2022
