righton Holiday Properties is excited to work with home-owners to empower them to make the most out of their property. They specialise in the short-term lettings market and have a wealth of experience in turning properties into places that customers can’t wait to stay. They provide a range of services to clients who want to get their property on Airbnb from interior design, guest management, cleaning and maintenance. Brighton Holiday Properties can offer bespoke packages depending upon the individual client’s need. Allan and Toni Robinson are two Brighton and Hove residents who decided to take advantage of the exciting Airbnb market. After deciding to semi-retire, Allan and his wife decided to put their home in Clifton Hill on Airbnb. Their plan was to spend time travelling and let the house out on Airbnb whilst they did so. Because it was their home, it was

so important to Allan that they could work with a company they could trust: “We’ve only got the one property and it’s our home, it’s not a business.” Allan has been working with Brighton Holiday Properties, a company of the Khalil Property Group, led by Ahmed Khalil. Allan said that feeling comfortable within that working relationship was hugely important: “We decided that he was someone who we could trust. And that was very important, that the trust was there. Because - I’ll reiterate it - it’s our home. We live in it and we’re very proud of it. And because of that, we had to have someone to work with who we could trust, and someone who knew the business, knew how it had to run and had a good team behind them.” Brighton Holiday Properties work with Allan to handle the guest management - from communication, cleaning to maintenance. Allan spoke to the convenience that a hosting

company provides so that he doesn’t have to worry about it: “If there are any problems certain things will go wrong, things will break, things will stop working…these are things that Ahmed can handle for us while we’re away. So it’s very important that he’s got a solid network behind him. And it’s been proven true! So we’re really happy with the service that we get from them and we’re really happy with the way they look after things.” So is Allan happy? That’s a resounding yes. “The reviews on Airbnb speak for themselves, really. They do a really good job. We need Ahmed and his team to be on the top of their game and they are.” If you’d like to speak to Ahmed and his team about getting your property on Airbnb, go to brightonholidayproperties.co.uk or call 07984 015 669.

Fringe Festival 2022. By Samantha Harman

T

he highly anticipated Fringe and Brighton Festival returns to Brighton this month and Discover caught up with CEO and Fringe Director Julian Caddy for a quick chat about festivals past and present. How long have you been at the helm at the Fringe? I started at the end of October 2011, so just over a decade. Time flies! Can you recall your first ever Fringe? My first ever visit to Brighton Fringe was in 2006 but it wasn’t until 2009 that I produced a show: Serendipity by Le Navet Bete at the Brunswick Hive. It was quite a different Brighton Fringe back then but a brilliant experience. My first Edinburgh Fringe came in 1996 though, which was when my Fringe journey really began and I’ve never looked back.

The past two years have been tricky because of lockdown - are you looking forward to things returning to normal? We certainly are. We have some really exciting work this year and I can’t thank the artists, venues, tech teams and everyone else involved enough for making the festival happen. It won’t be the same ‘normal’ that we had in 2019. This is not such a bad thing though as we’ve learned a lot from the pandemic. And we have put on two festivals since March 2020, so we have been keeping ourselves pretty busy! How has lockdown affected the performing arts industry? The lockdowns and restrictions have been hugely challenging on so many levels, particularly from a creative, financial and mental health perspective. We have also seen many people leaving the industry as they’ve needed to pay the bills. We are still feeling the effects as well and costs, supply

chain logistics and recruitment are a real challenge. In many ways the post pandemic time has been the hardest actually. I think, going forward, we will see a leaner, more focussed industry now and we are pulling together a lot more. What do you think performing arts bring to society? The performing arts, and indeed all the arts, reflect us. They are our collective identity and help us to reconnect with each other, ourselves and our culture. Without the arts, there is a fundamental absence of humanity, and indeed no society at all. I love this quote: “Before a child speaks, they sing. Before they write, they paint. And as soon as they stand, they dance.” brightonfringe.org

Marrocco’s Italian Restaurant & Gelateria By Nancy Duckels If you’ve ever walked along Hove seafront on a sunny (or even not so sunny) day, you’ve probably seen the long lines of people queuing for Marrocco’s ice cream. This place is a bit of a Brighton and Hove institution - it’s been open since 1969 and has seen generations of happy customers. First opened by Renato and Maria Marrocco, and now with their son Peter and business partner Altin at the helm, this is an iconic Hove location for food and drink. First famous for their ice-cream (which we will get to, don’t you worry), Morocco’s also enjoys a splendid reputation for their spectacular seafood platters, available by pre-order. But this is all on top of their standard menu of authentic Italian food, cooked fresh on the premises. We eagerly went along to sample some. The menu is a who’s who of classic Italian cuisine - pizza, pasta, risotto, as well as steak on the grill. Considering the reputation of seafood at Marrocco’s, we decided that we had to try some seafood starters - the Calamari

ISSUE THREE | MAY 2022

Discover May 2022.indd 17

Fritti and the king prawns, Gamberoni in Padella. The calamari came in a generous portion, delicious little bits of beautiful squid deep-fried in a light, crispy batter. Dipped in lovely garlic aioli, they were a real delight. The king prawns were huge beauties of crustaceans, that came on a bed of salad leaves dressed in a flavoursome tomato sauce. Any self-respecting customer in an Italian establishment has to try the bread - so we went for the bruschetta starter, too. The bread was crusty yet light and soft, topped with good olive oil, chunks of garlic and chopped cherry tomatoes. Simple Italian flavours at their best and absolutely delicious. For the mains, we decided to try some of the specials section of the menu. First, the sea bass - a beautiful whole grilled fish garnished with lemon, served with buttered seasonal vegetables and a choice of potatoes. We went for the homemade chips, which were golden and thick-cut.

We had to try some pasta Paccheri Con Frutti Di Mare - sheets of wonderful homemade pasta, piled with generous servings of mussels, king prawns and clams, all finished with a tomato cream sauce so good that we mopped the plate with bread at the end. To finish, we simply had to try the Marrocco’s ice cream. We enjoyed a selection - pistachio, chocolate, blueberry cheesecake, strawberry, vanilla, cookies and cream, salted caramel and mango sorbet. What can we say? Those queues are well-deserved. Our particular favourites were the pistachio, blueberry cheesecake, salted caramel and cookies and cream. Although we could just list all of them as they were so good. If you’re after delicious food in a welcoming atmosphere - go to Marrocco’s. It’s as simple as that. marroccos.co.uk 8 Kings Esplanade, Hove BN3 2WA 01273 203 764

The Breakfast Club.

By Nancy Duckels

T

hey say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day - so we had high hopes for The Breakfast Club. The Breakfast Club describe themselves as a ‘caf’ that serves comfort food - lovingly cooked, ethically sourced and served with warmth and hospitality. First founded in Soho by childhood friends Jonathan and Ali in 2005, the Brighton location is one of their rare spots outside of London - a real treat for us here in Brighton and Hove. Located on Market Street, The Breakfast Club is a glorious yellow-fronted building that promises a cheery reception. And this promise was not broken - we were greeted cheerfully by the friendly and welcoming staff and shown to a comfy booth. The smells coming from the kitchen were delicious - we needed to get in on this action. The menu is a marvellous composition of cooked breakfast classics, alternatives and treats pancakes, full English breakfasts, veggie and vegan alternatives,

ISSUE THREE | MAY 2022

french toast dishes, breakfast burritos, as well avocado and egg toast dishes. A proper feel-good menu. We knew that we absolutely had to try the pancakes - described on the menu as ‘locally world famous’, these fluffy delicacies have a great reputation. In order to conduct the most thorough research, we went for both sweet and savoury options. It’s a hard life but somebody has to do it. For the savoury, we had the ‘Bacon, Egg and Cheese McLovin’ - a stack of pancakes with crispy bacon, hash brown, cheese, golden caramelised onions and topped with a beautiful fried egg. It was a delicious combination the light, sweet, fluffy pancakes worked brilliantly with the rich, savoury flavours of bacon and egg. This also came with maple syrup on the side. On the sweet side, we had the classic ‘Pancakes and Berries’ another pancake stack complete with vanilla cream, a variety of berries, lemon and maple syrup. This was quite simply, heaven on a plate. It tasted as beautiful

as it looked (and it looked very beautiful.) Let us assure you that the Breakfast Club pancakes deserve their reputation. We also tried more of a wildcard option, as recommended by our server - the ‘Disco Hash’, a medley of delicious things mixed together to create a party for the mouth: fried potatoes, harissa cheese sauce, pickled onions and red cabbage, spring onion, jalapeños and another beauty of a fried egg. This had a bit of a kick and was a fun alternative to the more traditional breakfast. As well as their fabulous variety of breakfast dishes, The Breakfast Club serves burgers and Saint Elmo’s Fire wings. We’ll be returning to try more - they are open 8am to 4pm Monday to Thursday and 8am to 5pm on Friday to Sunday.

Park fitness with Paul @fasttwitchfitness_ Do you want to get fit? But does the gym sound intimidating? Well, you’re in luck - we’ve spoken to Paul Halpin, former professional boxer and now personal trainer at Brighton’s Underground Gym, to hear about how we can get fit in a more accessible way. We’re so lucky in Brighton and Hove to have plenty of beautiful outdoor space to enjoy. The seafront and the parks across the city are great places to start your fitness journey. Paul says: “We’re so blessed with the parks nowadays, with the way that the council is putting gym equipment in the parks. And we’ve got the internet - you can google anything! There’s no reason why you can’t go work out.” But Paul reminds us that it’s important to check that you’re doing exercises correctly: “Before you start lifting anything, you should make sure that your movement patterns are correct - that you can squat correctly, that you can lunge correctly, you can do a press-up properly.” If you haven’t got time to go to the gym, try Paul’s “simple park circuit” to work up a sweat and get your muscles working! 10 squats, 10 press-ups, 10 lunges, 10 bench dips, 20 plank shoulder taps, Run approximately 200 metres (repeat 3 - 5 times).

Clear-Airways clear-airways.co.uk Local ladies Debi and Kirsty worked for a major UK airline for a number of years until Covid-19 halted their working lives. With time on their hands, and mouths to feed, Debi and Kirsty couldn’t sit around and do nothing! This is where Clear Airways was born. As cabin crew, they needed to be highly trained in many areas - whether it be a medical emergency, fire or security risk on board as well as being childminders and social workers - cabin crew don’t just serve tea and coffee! They realised that their first aid skills were transferable to their everyday lives and wanted to share their knowledge. They’ve seen first-hand that life-saving skills really do work. Debi and Kirsty say: “We saw a niche in the market for First Aid Training and decided to go back to college, retrain to get our teaching qualification and become first aid instructors.” Over the last 18 months, Clear Airways has really taken off! We have gone into numerous local businesses to train their staff: restaurants, the fitness industry, school teachers, as well as new parents. We are a fully regulated company and our courses are in line with insurance. Please contact us for a bespoke quote, we promise it will be fun and informative!

The Power of Cold By Nancy Duckels

C

ryobright is a wellness business with an icy twist - cryotherapy. Independently owned and family run, Cryobright is the first and only clinic in Sussex to specialise in whole body and localised cryotherapy. Cryotherapy harnesses the power of extreme cold to activate the body’s natural healing capability, by triggering a number of physiological responses. Whilst the benefits are far-reaching and varied, they include reducing inflammation, anti-ageing effects, boosting mood, energy, metabolism and immune system, aiding sports recovery and pain relief. Run by Shelley and Rob Tregidga, Cryobright is a light, airy and modern space on Church Road in Hove. They tell me that business is going well: “We’ve had a great start since we opened our doors… it’s been incredibly rewarding to see how people have benefited from our services, from athletes seeking faster recovery and people struggling with symptoms of autoimmune conditions such as arthritis. We have invested in the very best science backed technologies to help people optimise their mental and physical health and wellbeing.” Time to get these benefits for myself - first, the cryotherapy

chamber experience. As I changed into the clothes I’d been given to wear (sports gear, gloves and socks to protect the extremities!) I felt excited and a little nervous. However, Rob talked me through the science and what to expect, as well as taking some basic health information. Feeling reassured, I chose a song to play inside the chamber (nice touch) and then stepped inside. What can I say? Well - it was cold! Considering it’s -85 degrees celsius in there, it would be. I remembered that Rob had recommended having a wiggle and found that this helped. Rob counted down the minutes for me via hand signal and three minutes, 45 seconds later, opened the door. I stepped out feeling exhilarated - I sensed that my body had just been through something extraordinary, and felt a rush of tingles and warmth. It was a buzz. Next up, leg compression therapy - these are sleeves that go over the legs and apply pressure through inflation and deflation. This clears metabolic waste build-up and helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the leg muscles, perfect for post workout recovery. I sat and chatted to Rob while the compression therapy did its work. He told me that they’ve built up

a great relationship with their customers: “We have built such a loyal, friendly and supportive community of people who come and see us regularly, recommend us to their friends and networks and encourage and support us.” Shelley added: “I absolutely love running a business in my home town. Brighton and Hove is amazing, the people are amazing, everyone is so friendly and supportive and people genuinely care about their health and wellbeing and that of others.’’ The final stop on my tour of Cryobright was the CryoFace mask. This face mask uses cooled air and LED light therapy to trigger a natural healing response in the skin. The benefits include boosted collagen production, pore shrinkage and reduced inflammation - yes please! Sadly, this visit had to come to a close. I walked back to my car with a definite spring in my step, feeling positive, energised and bright! Cryobright also offers hands-on therapies, including massage and assisted stretch as well an infrared sauna - I think I might need to go back to try those. cryobright.co.uk 197-199 Church Road, Hove 01273 777 474

Hanky Panky Pelirocco Style By Samantha Harman

F

eatures Editor Samantha Harman checks out the new kinky themed room ‘Taboo’ and breakfast at Hotel Pelirocco. Anyone who knows me will tell you I’m obsessed with the Pelirocco - visit and you’ll know why. This quirky, boutique hotel embodies the ethos of Brighton, it’s sexy and cool with themed rooms, a cute tiki bar and iconic artwork. As luck would have it a new room has been created giving me an excuse to return to one of my favourite Brighton haunts. The Taboo room, created by sex shop owner of the same name and former star of Channel 4’s, A Very British Sex Show, Tim Richardson, is a glamorous take on kink. Everything is there to encourage the mood including mirrored ceiling, velvet chaise longue, cuffing points on the bed and a St Andrew’s cross adorns the wall. To say it’s an introduction to the lifestyle is fair and whether you’re a seasoned kinkster or just curious this is the perfect room for you. One of my favourite touches ISSUE THREE | MAY 2022

Discover May 2022.indd 37

is the room door which is a giveaway to what lies behind it, bright red velvet with a pair of fixed handcuffs… Marco, hotel manager extraordinaire, wanted to create something tongue in cheek, and designer Tim understood the sexy but fun assignment perfectly - the room wouldn’t be intimidating if it was the only room available on a busy night. Anyone over 18 could stay here and feel comfortable. (Or uncomfortable if you wished winky face...) Breakfast is an essential part of your stay and the menu is impressive. Also, word to the wise - if you book directly through the website then it’s included in the price. My partner and I chose the classics; Eggs Benedict and a full English. We opted to sit downstairs in the bar area on comfy retro armchairs and were offered tea, coffee and juice. You don’t have to eat downstairs, guests can upgrade and have a Lovebird package for only £99 which includes; breakfast in bed, a late checkout, Bolney Estate Sparkling Wine, chocolates and

fresh flowers. (other packages are available.) The food arrived without delay and both portions were huge. On my plate was sausage, bacon, two fried eggs, mushrooms, a grilled tomato, fried potatoes and a slice of toast. All high quality local produce is used, the meat comes from the Brighton Sausage Company, and the eggs are free range. Everything was cooked to perfection and I couldn’t eat it all. The Eggs Benedict were a triumph, perfect runny orange yolks sitting on top of a toasted muffin smothered in the creamiest Hollandaise sauce. We were both pleasantly full and decided to walk it off on the seafront, which is just a stone’s throw away. I can’t emphasise how amazing this place is - you’re guaranteed a warm welcome and a unique experience every time. Like a homing pigeon, I hope to return soon.
