Welcome to our Spring Series 2020, starting with the traditional Messiah and Ceremony of Carols on Monday 30 December and running all the way through to a May Bank Holiday Monday grand finale. During that time we’ll be presenting 52 concerts spanning the worlds of classical, pop, folk and jazz in a host of unique central London venues. If you can sing it, it’s got a home somewhere in the Brandenburg Festival. Jazz and gospel take a particular centre stage this season as the London International Gospel Choir, On That Note, Addison Jazz Choir, Take 20 and London Gospel Factory make eagerly anticipated returns to the Festival. Having launched the Festival 11 years ago at St Martin-in-the-Fields, we’re delighted to present two of the church’s resident choirs as their music director Andrew Earis joins the Festival as Associate Musical Director. Our Come & Sings give you a wonderful opportunity to make the music yourself, joining the choir for Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Vivaldi’s Gloria or Goodall’s The Gravity of Kindness. And that just scratches the surface of everything we have on offer – read on to find out more. As ever, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who is involved in bringing the Festival together, in particular this year’s Artistic Patron James Macmillan. So over to you – take a look through the brochure, head to our website www.brandenburg.org.uk to book tickets and join us as we celebrate all things choral. While you’re at it, pick up a Brandenburg loyalty card for discounts on future events and join our Friends mailing list so you’ll be first to know about our future plans. We’ll see you at a concert soon!

VENUES Cadogan Hall

5 Sloane Terrace, Belgravia, London SW1X 9DQ www.cadoganhall.com Victoria (18-20 mins ) Sloane Square (3 mins ) Set in a fantastic location in the heart of Chelsea, Cadogan Hall has become one of London’s leading venues. The Hall’s 950 seats, excellent acoustic and luxurious surroundings make it the first choice for some of the UK’s top orchestras, as well as a favourite London destination for international touring orchestras. Cadogan Hall is the chosen venue for the world-famous BBC Proms Chamber Music Series and also offers a vibrant selection of contemporary, jazz, folk and world music events as well as talks, debates and conferences.

Corpus Christi

1-5 Maiden Lane, London WC2E 7NB www.corpuschristimaidenlane.org.uk London Charing Cross (5 mins ) Covent Garden (4 mins ) A hidden gem of Covent Garden in London, Corpus Christi is the Westminster Diocesan Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament, and was elevated to this dignity by Cardinal Nichols in 2018. Built in 1874 as an act of reparation for sins against the Blessed Sacrament during the Reformation, the church holds a very special place in the hearts of Catholics around the world. The hymns Sweet Sacrament Divine and O Sacred Heart were composed here by a former Parish Priest, Fr. Francis Stanfield. Corpus Christi has also become known as the Catholic Actors’ Church.

Holy Sepulchre London

Holborn Viaduct, London EC1A 2DQ www.hsl.church City Thameslink (1 min ) St Paul’s (3 mins ) There has been a worshipping community at Holy Sepulchre since at least 1137 when a charter records that Rahere (the founder of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital) appointed ‘Hagno the Clerk’ as priest of Holy Sepulchre. Situated near to the Old Bailey and Newgate Prison, St Sepulchre’s shares some pretty gruesome history. The Execution Bell – a hand bell on display in the church – was rung by the St Sepulchre’s bellman at midnight of an execution day. More happily, in the Twentieth Century St Sepulchre’s has become known as the National Musicians’ Church. A young Henry Wood learned to play the organ there, and was appointed Assistant Organist aged 14. In 1944 his ashes were laid to rest in what is now called The Musicians’ Chapel.

St Bartholomew the Great

Cloth Fair, London EC1A 7JQ www.greatstbarts.com Farringdon (7 mins ) Barbican (4 mins ) The Priory Church of St Bartholomew the Great is London’s oldest parish church, founded in A.D. 1123 as part of a monastery of Augustinian Canons. The Priory was dissolved in 1539 and the nave of the Church was demolished. The monastic buildings were largely intact and the Canons’ choir and sanctuary were preserved for parish use. Under Queen Mary, there was briefly a house of Dominican friars here, before it reverted to being a Parish Church under Queen Elizabeth I. Various parts of the building were damaged or destroyed through the centuries until the restoration began in the 19th century, first in the 1860s and then, under Sir Aston Webb, in the 1880s and 90s and on into the 20th century.

BRANDENBURG CHORAL FESTIVAL OF LONDON | SPRING SERIES 2020

VENUES St Gabriel’s Pimlico

Warwick Square, London SW1V 2AD www.stgabrielspimlico.com London Victoria (9-10 mins ) Pimlico (9-10 mins ) In a rapidly growing corner of 1850s London the Marquis of Westminster, who then owned all the land, granted the freehold of a plot at the South-West end of Warwick Square and £5,000 for the building of a church. The building was designed by Thomas Cundy Junior, Surveyor of the Grosvenor Estates, and consecrated in May 1853. Over the years various improvements and extensions followed, including the addition of the Lady Chapel at the south of the chapel, and insertion of the beautiful East window designed by C E Kempe, one of the great Victorian stained-glass window designers. During the Second World War a single bomb blew out most of the windows, but spared the East window – which now forms a magnificent centrepiece in this light, airy cathedral-like venue.

St James’s Sussex Gardens

Sussex Gardens, Paddington, London W2 3UD www.stjamespaddington.org.uk Paddington (6 mins ) Lancaster Gate (4 mins ) St James’s Sussex Gardens is the Parish Church of Paddington. The site dates back to before 1222 as a chapel, followed by the church of St Katherine and later St James’s. The 1843 church was deemed too small by the early 1880s and G E Street – architect of the Law Courts in the Strand – was engaged to redesign the church, which was reconsecrated in December 1882. In May 1884, Constance Mary Lloyd married Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde in St James’s.

St John’s Waterloo

Waterloo Road, London SE1 8TY www.stjohnswaterloo.org London Waterloo (2 mins ) Waterloo (2 mins ) The Church of St John was built to the designs of the architect Francis Octavius Bedford in 1824 in a Greek style inspired by Bedford’s background as a well-respected Greek scholar. Bedford’s churches were fiercely criticised by contemporary critics at a time when the tide was turning away from the Greek revival towards Gothic. St John’s however gained more critical appreciation mainly because of its fine spire which used classical detail to build up a more traditional English parish church shape. The Church was struck by a bomb in 1940, when the roof and much of the interior was destroyed. The building stood open for ten years until it was restored in 1950. In 1951 the Church was rededicated as the Festival of Britain Church.

St Martin-in-the-Fields

Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 4JH www.smitf.org London Charing Cross (3 mins ) Charing Cross (3 mins ) Overlooking Trafalgar Square, St Martin’s lies at the geographical, artistic and spiritual centre of the Brandenburg Choral Festival of London. The Brandenburg orchestras have enjoyed performing many concerts in its superb acoustics over the years here and the recent refurbishment has transformed it into a wonderful venue for concerts. St Martin’s is also home to the Café in the Crypt, host to Jazz in the Crypt.

VENUES St Stephen’s Gloucester Road

Gloucester Road and Southwell Gardens, London SW7 4RL www.saint-stephen.org.uk Gloucester Road (3 mins ) St Stephen’s Church is a Grade II* listed Anglican church in South Kensington’s tourist and museum district, and for nearly 150 years it has served the needs of the local community and visitors from all over the world. The church was built in 1867, and is one of the best remaining churches by the ‘rogue’ Victorian architect, Joseph Peacock. St Stephen’s was the parish of poet TS Eliot, and he served as Church Warden from 1934 to 1959.

St Stephen Walbrook

39 Walbrook, London EC4N 8BN www.ststephenwalbrook.net Cannon Street (2 mins ) Bank (2 mins ) In the second century A.D. a temple of Mithras stood on the bank of the Walbrook, a stream running across London from the City Wall near Moorfields to the Thames. In this temple Roman soldiers sought valour and virility in shower-baths of hot blood from slaughtered bulls. After the recall of the legions to Rome in 410 A.D. the building became a quarry; the locals left only the foundations. These were discovered when Bucklersbury House was built in 1953-1957, and they are preserved to this day. However, there were no foundations of the Christian church which stood on the site and was a going concern in 1090 A.D. when it was given to the monastery of St. John by Eudo, Dapifer (cupbearer) to Henry I. It was Saxon, not Norman, and must have been built on the Mithraic foundations to hallow a heathen site. By 1428 this church and its graveyard were too small for the parish, and licences were obtained to build a larger church on higher ground some twenty meters to the east, the ground having risen about six meters; and Walbrook, no longer a stream, was now a street.

Wellington Hotel by Blue Orchid

71 Vincent Square, London SW1P 2PA www.blueorchid.com London Victoria (8 mins ) Pimlico and St James’s Park (8 mins ) In 1828 the Duke of Wellington, victor of the Battle of Waterloo and then Prime Minister, chaired a public meeting which led to the launch of King’s College London. The College was granted a royal charter by King George IV a year later, and eventually became a place of theological study in 1846, as a dedicated Halls of Residence for training Church of England clergy. In 1923 an additional wing was added to the West side of the building, which included The Chapel. The Wellington Suite, once known as the Refectory, still contains the religious coat of arms. In 2003 the buildings were acquired by Grange Hotels and in 2019 were transferred to the Blue Orchid Group. The Festival uses both the Chapel and the Wellington Suite as innovative performance spaces.

2020 ARTISTIC PATRON JAMES MACMILLAN picture credit Andy Holdsworth

“Congratulations to all at the Brandenburg Choral Festival on reaching it’s 10th Birthday. The emergence and development of the project has been immensely exciting this past decade, and reflects the inspiring blossoming of interest and affection in choral music throughout the land. The sheer diversity of the festival is impressive and I would like to wish all my best to the choirs taking part, and to their lucky audiences. Choral music, and especially it’s growth at amateur and volunteer levels, is the great success story in British music, reflecting a healthy musical ecology in our society. The Brandenburg Festival is imaginative proof of that.” Sir James MacMillan

SPECIAL MUSICAL THANK YOU 2020 ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR ANDREW EARIS “I am thrilled to be this year’s Associate Musical Director for The Brandenburg Choral Festival of London. It’s a delight to have an ongoing collaboration between Brandenburg Sinfonia and the Sound of St Martin’s Concert Series at St Martin-in-the-Fields throughout the year. St Martin’s is also the venue for a significant number of concerts in the Brandenburg Choral Festival and it’s exciting to see such a range of choirs involved as the festival goes from strength to strength.”

Andrew Earis www.brandenburg.org.uk/festival

HISTORY Now we are 10! The Brandenburg Choral Festival began in Spring 2009 with 6 concerts at St Martin-in-the-Fields. Although the Brandenburg Sinfonia had been playing at St Martin’s regularly, the concerts were usually spread throughout the year, but these were close enough together to go on one leaflet. Looking at the layout, Artistic Director Bob Porter muttered the immortal words: “That needs a title - let’s call it a Festival!” - and the rest is history! We then started looking for other venues and by the following year the pattern for the Festival as we know it was in place. Some of the first choirs who performed that year are still regulars, including Twickenham Choral Society, the Addison Singers and Medici Choir. By 2012 the Festival had over 40 concerts and the venues included St Clement Danes and The Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy. 2013 was a significant year for the Festival: we introduced the Fringe Club, John Rutter became our first Artistic Patron and the Autumn Series was born. The 11th November 2014 saw a major highlight as the Brandenburg Festival Chorus and Brandenburg Sinfonia performed Mozart’s Requiem in the Royal Courts of Justice. This Armistice Day concert was a mesmerising event which none of us will ever forget. That was the year we also started partnering with charities and so far we have helped and supported over 250 groups to raise funds and awareness for some excellent causes. In 2015 a rebrand saw us become the Brandenburg Choral Festival of London, and the Spring and Autumn Series combined brought the total number of concerts to over 100 a year. Along the way we have had the help and advice of the great and the good of the contemporary choral world, as John Rutter, Howard Goodall, Morten Lauridsen, Bob Chilcott, Eric Whitacre, Will Todd and James MacMillan have carried the baton of Artistic Patron. We have also had the support of our Associate Music Directors and volunteer Ambassadors, who all give their time and experience and without whom we simply couldn’t exist. The Festival has grown and flourished in an economic climate where even survival is a success. We continue to expand with bespoke Christmas concerts and the Choral Cruises, and remain the premier showcase for choral singing in London. 12

BRANDENBURG CHORAL FESTIVAL OF LONDON | SPRING SERIES 2020

2020 FESTIVAL CONCERT GUIDE Our Vision To bring a little bit more harmony to the world What do we do? We bring choral music of all shapes and sizes to as many people as possible Why do we do that? We think the world needs more harmony and music brings us together How do we do that? By finding as many ways as possible to allow people to experience, hear, get involved in and enjoy beautiful choral music What do we focus on? • Organising the UK’s largest choral festival • Finding ways for people to enjoy what we do whilst they travel • Partnering schools to give more young people more opportunity to get involved in what we do How do we do it? • Working with corporate organisations to amplify their own choral experiences • Using choirs and choral music to help teams hit the right note through immersive executive training • Raising money for charity by offering unique charity auction packages • Using music to bring communities together How do we behave? • We love creating connections between people and music, choirs and venues, our product and anyone that will listen! • We are always curious to discover new ways of enjoying choral music and new ways of finding more people to enjoy it too • We want music to be fun and uplifting and we behave like that ourselves; always smiling and always wanting to see the opportunity in everything www.brandenburg.org.uk/festival
