make-up artists

Welcome to the new generation of professionals. The only magazine of its kind. This magazine is for models, make-up artists, fashion designers, photographers and students. it is an oracle of information for the industry and up and coming artists of the future.

“We will praise you all

We all need a chance sometimes, real people in the every day challenge of being discovered and praised for the amazing work we do. my name is Natasha Booth, i have been in the makeup industry for over 14 years. I currently own my own beauty and training college in Essex. The concept of Face on magazine was conceived one evening when i was teaching fashion make-up and asked the learners to try and find some inspiration for homework. They came back with tear outs from magazines. This is not good enough and this is how Face On was created. All artists need inspiration or support at some stage in there career. You can expect great quality advice, pictures, images and knowlede.

a i v i l Watch This Space! O e i d n a Th Thandie Olivia is the creation of 24 year old British born and East London bred designer Thandie Fazakerley. Creating fashion has always been in her blood since her school days when she would sketch and customise clothing and to this day she has been building up to launch her own label.

2009 also sees the launch of her website www.thandieolivia. com which will have an online shop added later on in the year. In the meantime you can email your name and email address to enquiries@thandieolivia.com to be added to the mailing list and receive regular updates, or to enquire about prices and placing orders.

Having studied a Btec National Diploma Fashion & Clothing at the London College Fashion and Hackney College Thandie went on to work in high street fashion suppliers, where she gained valuable knowledge of manufacturing and production.

Asides from designing her own ready to wear collection. Thandie is also a wardrobe stylist and has numerous shoots lined up for the year, including collaborations with (name of your mag!). She has contacts with numerous designers and can source looks ranging from urban to highly avent garde, as well as a good stock of MUA’s and hair stylists that she has worked with and can recommend.

Thandie’s influences come from everything around her whether it be her South African roots or years growing up in the cosmopolitan East London. Her clothes are wearable yet edgy using interesting lines and shapes punctuated with bursts of colour and innovative detailing to create funky and unique pieces. The label concentrates on style and femininity and provides the modern day women with sassy pieces to feel sexy in and stand out from the crowd. It does not limit itself to trends but instead injects them with its own signature style.

There are lots of other plans in the pipeline for this young and talented designer so watch this space! Contacts

Website: www.thandieolivia.com Email: enquiries@thandieolivia.com Telephone: 07947142023

Although edgy and unique the designer ensures her clothes are also highly wearable using quality natural fabrics, such as silks and superb craftsmanship that allow the customer to not only look but also feel fabulous. What’s going on 2009: Thandie Olivia is currently selling the Spring/Summer 2009 collection ‘Cocktails & Candy’ and will be show casing this amongst some never before seen pieces at the Clothes Show London at the Excel Centre from 29th to 31st May 2009.

Creating fashion has always been in her blood

Designer Thandie is also now working on the Autumn/ Winter 2009/10 collection entitled ‘City Warrior’ to be launched in September this year at a fashion showcase also being organised by herself. The fashion showcase aims to provide a platform for emerging talented designers to get their work out there, to not only the public but also the people in the industry who matter.

About Bonnie How did you get started in the modelling industry? Hi there I got started a while ago but did only a few glamour shoots. I restarted my career when I went on a shoot with my friend to help her do the make-up. It was for a fhm shoot which went really good. The photographer just asked if I would do some shots with another girl, why not I thought. I was nervous because I had not shaved my legs ( she laughs). After this my friend got me onto some sites and we went from there. I now only do paid jobs. Who in the modelling world is your inspiration? My first thought is Katie Price as I love her independence and strong will. If you really look closely at her work her images are very inspirational. I also adore Tyra Banks.

She laughs, I went on a shoot with my friend and I love fluff. I did a few shots with the fluff and I think the poor photographer did not know what to do. I was going mental as I love fluff. We also did on the same shoot a few with a weird spider, that was interesting. I have such fun and never had a bad shoot. Its my time so I make sure I enjoy but stay professional. What are modelling?

I am currently studying at college for Beauty. it’s a long course and takes up two evenings a week. I love it but would like to concentrate on the make-up side of the course as this is great when the shoots have no make-up artist. Oh and my dogs they are my life ( shows me pictures from her phone). So what’s next? I have a few shoots lined up this weekend and page 3 idol, a calendar, and a big shoot in Athens. All very exciting. What sites would you recommend? Model mayhem, pure storm and net model. I get a lot of my work from these. What brand of make-up is your favourite? Mac I love the colours and the pigment is so good.

Thank you Bonnie for your time and honesty. To contact Bonnie please send in your request form or call us.

INTERVIEW WITH CONNIE SIMS, MODEL, MAKEUP ARTIST AND STUDENT. WHEN I ACTUALLY PASSED MY EXAMS I COULD NOT BELIEVE THE ACHIEVEMENT AS I WAS A SINGLE YOUNG MUM AND LIFE HAS NOT BEEN SO EASY FOR ME. I HAD THE BUZZ THEN TO CONTINUE MY EDUCATION IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY. THE NEXT ADVENTURE WAS A MAKEUP COURSE AT A PRIVATE COLLEGE WHICH GAVE ME ONE TO ONE TUITION. THIS I FOUND AN AMAZING CONFIDENCE BOOST AND UNLEASHED A WHOLE NEW WORLD TO ME. MY NEW CAREER IN MAKEUP. MY TUTOR HAD LANDED A JOB AT A THEATRE COMPANY AND ASKED IF I WOULD LIKE TO BE ON HER TEAM THE FEELING WAS INDESCRIBABLE AND AMAZING. MY MUM IS MY ROCK AND I COULD NOT WAIT TO SEE HER FACE AND SHOW HER MY PROGRESS AS A MAKEUP ARTIST. MY DAUGHTER WILL GROW UP VERY PROUD OF HER MUM AS I KNOW THAT I CAN DO ANYTHING. I THEN HAD ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY WHICH TOOK ME BY SURPRISE AGAIN, IT WAS TO BE A MODEL. I HELPED OUT FOR A SHOOT AND THEY WANTED ME TO JOIN IN. AT FIRST I WAS NOT SURE THEN I STARTED TO BELIEVE I COULD DO IT AND THE PICTURES SHOWED HOW WELL I DID.THIS THEN SET ANOTHER PATH FOR ME TO TAKE. IT IS A WORKING PROGRESS AND I HAVE JOBS LINED UP. I WOULD LIKE TO GET INTO ALL ASPECTS OF MODELLING. IN TEN YEARS TIME I SEE MYSELF A SUCCESSFUL MAKEUP ARTIST IN TV AND FILM WORK. I WOULD LIKE TO SPECIALISE IN SPECIAL EFFECTS MAKEUP AS WELL FOR WEST END PRODUCTIONS. MAYBE MY OWN BUSINESS WHO KNOWS ITS ALL A BIG CHANGE FOR ME AND I LOVE IT.

1. Blusher

2. Highlighter

3. Shader They can be used to accentuate and diminish features and or add colour and warmth. Shading and highlighting can be done on light or dark skin. However shading on dark skins will be less prominent while highlighting will be more obvious. High lighters and shaders can help transform day make-up to evening make-up by creating more highlights on the face. Blusher or rouge is used to add warmth and colour to the skin Remember

Never apply any liquid or wet products after any translucent powder application. This will turn the face creepy looking. Any blushers in a powder form will be applied after foundation and the translucent powder. Any cream or liquid blushers or rouge must be applied after foundation. Translucent powder after to seal or not at all.

Application of blusher On to brush and remember to tap off excess. You will be created a c shape from temple around the eye on the cheeks. You can use a red, pink, peach or tan bronzer in this area. Experiment with a combination of colours.

High lighters Are used to enhance positive features they are usually light colours: beiges, pinks, whites. Dome are pearlised or iridescent finishes and can be cream or powder. Commonly used, eye lids, eyebrow, across cheek bones.

Shaders

Shaders reduce or diminish a particular facial feature. Dark pink, tawny or brown shades are used and always have a matt finish.

When I do a make-up shoot I can not always take my whole kit because of travelling and often getting on the tube. You need a light weight small roller trolley. Interview with student Meggie Mason.

In level 2 Beauty Therapy, I have always been interested in beauty especially make-up but I had never thought of making a career out of it until last year. Last year I realised I had a passion for make-up, always trying out new looks and practising on friends and family. I chose beauty as I career path as I don’t think I will ever get fed up of it because every day is different. I enjoy waxing and manicures but get most satisfaction from the make-up. I go to college twice a week and do work placement twice a week too. Since I started beauty I feel more confident in myself and what I can achieve through this. I have assisted on some photo shoots and a music video at a local college with my friend. This gave me an excellent insight behind the scenes. Lots of waiting around but such a buzz.

Sarah 30 Essex Hi there my name is sarah and I have been a make-up artist for ten years now and I would like some advice on where I can go for jobs. I have just lost my job as a photographic artist and need some advice.

Dear sarah,

Sorry to hear about your job, what you need to do is make sure you have a portfolio of your work, whenever you do make-up get a copy of the shoot. This can be emailed to potential clients and work. Here are some excellent work sites who post jobs on daily., good luck keep active. Mandy.com, gum tree, Kz entertainment

Make-up When you are a make-up artist the following situations may occur.

Client does not like the make-up. This is a very common question and there is no simple answer. You have to remain calm and be professional at all times. You need to ask the question ‘what is it you do not like’ Sometimes it is just because it is different from what they are used to. Nothing is a problem and everything can be redone and sorted out. Make sure you give a in depth consultation so this does not happen. When you have been doing this for years you will immediately know what to change with little or know effort. If it is for a wedding this is why trails are suggested. For film and television work you have to have experiencing lighting and what make-up can be used on high definition. For this can always gain experience as an assistant. You must gain experience and provide a portfolio for clients to view your work. Do not ever doubt your work you are the professional you just need to listen to the client. Client is getting married and asks you on the day to do 3 other people! This happens on a rare occasion but I was asked this question while the artist was still at the house. I asked the following questions.

4.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

5. Time can now be cut down to approx 15-20 mins each.

Age of clients Skin condition What did they want Have you got time How long should it take you.

Answers 1. All 20-25 2. Good skin one has acne 3. Smoky eyes dewy look 4. Not really got to be at another appointment in an hour 5. 30 mins each Problems 1. Age is great they can take the smoky eye look, skin is taught. 2.

Acne can be a problem and if inflamed can make the condition worse, ask the client if they have there own foundation or specific products.

3. Smoky eyes do not suit every one depends on colours of the dresses and there complextions.

19. FACE ON MAGAZINE.indd 22-23

Not enough time possibly leave the smoky look or get them to apply there own foundation and powder so you are doing the eyes and lips only.

Charge them accordingly usually around £25-30 Weddings are a stressful time, you are not there to create stress you are or should be almost invisible. Get in do your job get out. And as always be professional all situations must be accounted for. Take your whole kit. Always include cover up as tattoos are usually a big job to cover up. Use Dermacolor from Charles fox to create a flawless look.. Spots are a usual problem. COVER UP 1. 2. 3. 4.
