s i A MESSAGE FROM orr M i k c i V

As we embark on another month under the COVID-19 precautions, I hope you

have take time to reflect on how much

you've grown as a person, as a business owner, as a professional, as a parent, and as a contributing member of society. How has this experience changed you? How have you expanded your knowledge-base? Did you take time to learn more about your industry and how you fit in it? Did you take advantage of the time at home to go for walks, or ride a bike? Personally, I have spent time growing my business. There are so many clients out there just waiting on you to offer your solution to the issues they face. I am ever reminded that we find our true strength in times of difficulty. For RISE, my first fear was that we are just done. There is no way for us to continue our events and do our part to help ensure our participants are not at risk while attending our events. I didn't think we could sustain a purely virtual and digital existence. "This is the way the program was carefully handed off to me, so I've got to do the best I can to maintain the integrity of the organization," said the voice in my mind.

I am ever reminded that we find our true strength in times of difficulty. Dare I say, I was afraid.... In the moment I realized fear was beginning to control me, I made a conscience pivot. I realized that there is value in what R.I.S.E. brings to the ecosystem. The core of why we do what we do is to serve small businesses. How am I serving if I'm stuck in fear? I challenge you to embrace the fear, and be motivitated by the possibilities!!

Workforce Development In A Constantly Changing Industry BY SHARON HEINZ, PROFIT WISE ACCOUNTING, MARKETING AND TAX Employers and industry leaders are facing challenges from every direction. The accounting industry is no exception. Like other industries, accountants are dependent on educated, highly skilled workers. The accounting industry as a whole recognizes the need to broaden the skills of the workforce from compliance-only skills to strategic advisory skills, which either means on the job training or high turnover. So, how in an constantly changing industry do you keep a relevant, consistent workforce?

We know our business’s success is dependent on not only hiring the candidate with the necessary skills, we also look for another key trait, adaptability. When the accounting industry changes, which often happens, this employee is able to grow and change alongside the business. Employees agreeable to continued learning while on the job contribute to the firm’s quality of service and their own professional growth.

In our office it is not unusual to find team members attending virtual meetings about law changes, listening to professional podcasts or preparing for certification exams in between tax returns and reconciliations. We recognize that our employees need to spend time developing their skills to remain relevant in a world of changing policies and laws, and we are happy to provide them with the necessary environment. Encouraging skill development on the job increases employee satisfaction and ensures our services remain current.

With demand strong and earning potentials high, providing a workforce development program keeps employees invested and the firm on top of a competitive market.

What are the Benefits of OutSourcing HR Services?

With today’s emphasis on company culture and loyalty,

management and the types of benefits a company

has

become

increasingly

important for a business's future. However, being competitive in these areas is not always easy for small and medium-sized businesses. Smaller companies often do not have the budgets to support

and

sometimes HR issues can be so thorny, it takes experts to navigate them successfully. But, in many cases, even if a business is able to staff an HR department, it is not always considered the best allocation of resources. If money can be saved using some form of outsourced HR, more funds will be available to invest in core activities—areas that will, in the long run, fuel success. This is where PassionHR comes in as a possible solution.

The main priority is to collaborate with you as a client to ensure they can cater skills and knowledge to your business needs. This also allows you to have an input in how they manage your business’ HR functions.

“SELF-TRUST IS THE FIRST SECRET OF SUCCESS.” -RALPH WALDO EMERSON

Applying the Pearl: Commitment, Focus, Passion By Jay Newkirk

I saw a TV ad recently featuring Mario Andretti, an Italian-born former racecar driver, one of the most successful drivers in the history of the sport. He was sitting relaxed in the middle of a race track and he said this: “If you plan to have success in business and in life you have to have three things: commitment, focus, and passion.”It struck me that Mario captured the essence of everything I share relative to the pearls of business and my business consulting.

Passion: Whether we realize it or not, if we are passionate about something it shows. We can’t fake passion. Relative to our businesses and our careers, being passionate about our products and services is a prerequisite to success. However, that passion has to be directed correctly, so when we are discussing our products and services we need to be thinking passionately about how we can adapt what we do to ensure we can help our prospective clients and customers achieve their objectives.

Morning Brew

17

Focus: The word focus brings to mind a multitude of thoughts. In the case of business and/or life achievements, we must pay close attention to doing the important things that move us toward our ultimate objectives. So we have to be constantly vigilant and focus on what we’re doing so we can accomplish the goal we’re committed to

Commitment: Growing our businesses or our careers starts with knowing where we are going and having a clear image of our ultimate objective—be it obtaining a government contract, building our business and taking it to the next level, or aspiring to a liquidity event. Once we have that objective clearly in mind, we must commit to achieving it.

HOW TO SAY NO WITHOUT BURNING BRIDGES

by Kevin Pendergrass | Pendergrass Promos

Making connections and building relationships are crucial to success if you are in sales in any form or fashion. So, obviously, the last thing I want to do is burn bridges. This means that every time somebody asks me to do something, volunteer for their event, or buy their product I always say yes. OK, not really. Actually, that can’t be further from the truth. Part of being in sales also involves making the most out of my time and money. So, what happens when someone asks me to do something I don’t want to do or buy something I don’t need? Well, I tell them no. But I do so in a kind and professional manner. Below is an e-mail I recently sent telling somebody no. They had asked if I would like to co-sponsor an event with them and provide promotional products in return for free advertising. Here is my response:

Based upon this e-mail I sent, I want to bring to your attention several points. First, compliment. Always begin with a sincere compliment of the person and/or the business. You do not want the person to think you are rejecting them or their business (unless you really are, but that is a different subject altogether). Instead, make it clear you are rejecting the opportunity because it didn’t fit within your business model. Second, appreciate. Thank the person. If they spent time trying to sell you a product, thank them for their time. They could have been with somebody else. Instead, they were with you. Let them know that you appreciate it. If they sent you an offer or opportunity, thank them for the opportunity.

Third, tell the truth. Tell them why you aren’t going to be able to buy their product or join with them in their offer. You don’t have to give a detailed defense. There is no need in overdoing it, but it is vital that you give an honest reason (don’t just put them off). Fourth, offer. Volunteer your time and services in ways that you are willing to help. This can be in specific or general ways. Finally, accept. Realize that sometimes feelings will still get hurt. Even if you are as kind as possible, some people will still get hurt because you said no. This is just part of reality. However, if you were kind, professional, and honest then you can go away knowing that you made the best decision.

ARTICLE

SERIES

WELLNESS THE NATURAL WAY BY RICK MAKOWSKI

WELLNESS THE NATURAL WAY – 5 DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

This is the fifth in a series on Wellness, the Natural Way and keys off of the previous article on our body’s immune system. We understand, our body’s musculoskeletal system and how our bones, muscles, tendons, cartilage, and ligaments work together to help us to move about and accomplish different things with our body. We also understand the basic functions of our respiratory system and breathing, circulatory system, nervous system, etc. We heard a little about the immune system in the last article, however, what makes our immune system “tick”? Many have at least heard of the phrase “Gut – Brain Connection”, but have we really tried to understand what that means? Our immune system “ticks” as part of our digestive system which beyond the absorption of nutrients and converting food into energy, hosts both our immune and a part of our nervous system referred to as our Enteric Nervous System (ENS). Our digestive system or the process - metabolism is a set of life sustaining chemical reactions in living organisms. The three main purposes of metabolism are: 1. the conversion of food to energy to run cellular processes; 2. the conversion of food/fuel to building blocks for proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and some carbohydrates; and 3. the elimination of nitrogenous wastes. These enzyme-catalyzed reactions allow organisms to grow and reproduce, maintain their structures, and respond to their environments (immune system).

Morning Brew

27

A significant part of our nervous system is the ENS. It is considered a “second brain” due to its complex functions and the vast concentration of actual nerves throughout our entire digestive tract (input through output). It is also able to function independently of the brain in our heads and Central Nervous System (CNS), hence, the “Gut – Brain Connection”. A significant amount of dopamine (>90%) and serotonin (50%) are also produced in the gut, therefore it also has a significant effect on our mood and emotional well-being, whether positive or negative via stress or from external threats.

Digestive health is key to a healthy immune system and even impacts our emotional well-being. So, how can we do this naturally? The impacts of what we use to fuel our bodies in the way of food is extremely important and is the best way to achieve digestive health. Given the typical foods available in our modern world, especially with processed foods, chemicals, preservatives, etc., it can be challenging to always eat well. The benefit of eating is not achieved until our bodies break things down into absorbable nutrients. We also need the right balance of nutrients to optimize our digestive system function. This can be achieved with a good foundation of proper vitamins and minerals. Just like natural vs processed food, natural vs synthetically processed vitamins are more readily accepted by our body’s metabolism. Many vitamins sold today show the right numbers of ingredients and daily recommended values, however, how well do we know if the compounds listed are natural or synthetic, and then if our bodies are actually able to absorb/accept the listed amounts of each? Another consideration is how our metabolism changes as our bodies age. What our bodies needed and was able to process in our 20s is much different in our 40s and then even 60s, and beyond. It is important to recognize those changes and respond accordingly for a balance of good health. Quality of input (food, vitamins, supplements) become increasingly important as we age. Supplements provide additional support in general or can assist with a specific issue whether digestive, inflammation, emotional/mood, etc. Quality Essential Oils (EOs) and herbals complement the vitamins and supplements and can help maintain an efficient digestive system. At the risk of sounding like your Mom or even Doctor, we should strive to eat well and more naturally, and complement with good quality natural vitamins and needed supplements. This article is intended for your personal use and informational purposes only. You should consult with a physician before beginning any exercise, fitness, diet, or nutrition routine, especially if pregnant or have pre-existing health conditions. Nothing contained in this article should be considered as medical advice or diagnosis.
