Put Out the Welcome Mat When You Hire New Employees By PassionHR | Mike Bean, SPRH President

As a business owner or human resource manager, you probably have a plan in place and a list of paperwork or tasks that your new employee will have to tackle. However, when it comes to beginning a new job, PassionHR knows that one of the most important things overlooked is a plan to make your new employee feel welcomed, appreciated and an important part of an already existing company team. Now that You Found the Right Candidate to Hire People who are in the job market are competing with other job seekers and try to always put the best foot forward, but what about the business itself? In order to attract the right employees to a position, a business needs to invest in their new hire. Developing a reputation for taking care of your employees and making them feel important goes a long way in employing long term, loyal employees. As a HR Manager, it’s importance to introduce your new hire to the company to make them feel comfortable. When HR Directors create a plan that takes into consideration the mindset and well-being of its employees, build the right work environment for the company.

10

Creating a “Welcome Strategy” The experienced and professional human resources team at PassionHR are familiar that new hires often approach a potential job with a great deal of nervousness and trepidation. The last thing your new employee wants is to be brought in, sat down and left to fend for themselves. Developing a “welcome strategy” allows your employees to get settled in, meet their coworkers and get to know their surroundings can be helpful in making them feel secure in the job choice that they made. Whether it’s assigning another employee to help get them assimilated or even just asking if there’s anything they need or how you can help can ease the stress and worry your new hire may be feeling. When you focus and create this plan it will make the employee feel appreciated to leave a lasting impression. Improve Your HR Employee Relations Throughout the interview process and definitely once you’ve made the hiring decisions, get to know your new employee. Now, we’re not talking favorite color or food, but how they like to work and what their best skills are. When taking a vested interest in your workers and what their best skills are, you may find a hidden talent worthy of bringing to the table. Include your employees in your business process and you may be surprised by how involved they become in your success.

Successful Leadership: Applying the Pearl By Jay Newkirk

Outcome Management author Larry Womack wrote in an interview I did with him that, “Leaders should be rewarded for the accuracy of their predictions, the wisdom of their visions, and the quality of their empowerment providing everyone with the knowledge, information, tools, and culture required to achieve the desired outcome.” Larry’s “pearl of business” stayed with me and I started thinking about how entrepreneurs can apply his advice to their current business environments and leadership roles. Prediction Accuracy Business success is in part achieved by the leadership assessing at the beginning of each year how the business performed during the previous year and using that information to optimize the new year’s projections. Doing this initiates prediction accuracy and leads to growth and reaching goals. Wisdom of Their Vision Leaders must have a vision in the first place, then be willing and able to share it with everyone around them. If your leadership team and employees don’t know your vision for your company, then they only have a job and they may not be as invested in your business’s ultimate success. However, if they know where you’re taking the company, they have a career and will stay with your business to help you achieve that vision that they also share.

15

"Leaders must have a vision in the first place, then be willing and able to share it with everyone around them." Quality of Empowerment Entrepreneurs and business owners often have extensive knowledge about their products and services, which may overshadow their ability to empower others around them. As businesses grow and employees are added, be sure that you are listening to the people around you, offering them the space and opportunity to be successful in their positions, and resist the urge to micro-manage everything. Employees will thrive in a collaborative business environment where they are empowered. What has been your experience as an owner, leadership team member, or staff member on this topic? Have you internalized your organization’s vision, contemplated how to envision and articulate it, and empowered yourself and your associates to achieve it?

The Simple Way to Effectively Expand Leadership Capabilities in the Workplace.

MODELING & DELEGATING

Leadership is an art. It takes people who have the tendency to listen actively, work collaboratively, and make decisions courageously. These leaders are open-minded visionaries who excel at mobilizing others toward a common goal.

Today, globalization and the influx of millennial workers has required a myriad of changes in the by:Â Dr. Kreslyn Kelley-Ellis | Authentic Leadership Series workplace. The economic, social, and cultural impact of these changes reaches across the globe across all sectors. This level of diversity has interfered with the way companies traditionally approach leading and managing: Firms are now striving to subscribe to newer and more relevant leadership models. In turn, this requires leaders to adapt their skills to handle the complexities of engaging and leading employees that are unique from colleagues of the past. Many U.S. companies must devote a large portion of their annual budget to leadership development. According to Gurdjian, Halbeisen and Lane (2014), businesses cumulatively spend about $14 billion annually on leadership development, and many will continue to make it a priority well into the future. While some fortune 500 companies have no problem allocating funds for professional development, others still grapple with how to develop leaders in the absence of a budget.

18

Yet, they are equally impacted by the recent shift in demographics and are actively looking for ways to both engage with each other and secure their future. Overcoming this logistic obstacle is a challenge for any business. But there is good news: There are ways to develop leaders regardless of the size of your budget. This method is called modeling and delegating. According to the theory of social learning, people acquire behaviors based on observing and experiencing others in their environments. Individuals are more likely to emulate behaviors that appear to reap rewards. Therefore, if subordinates are exposed to continuous abusive leadership, it is likely they will replicate the aggressive behaviors, especially they see others' negative behavior rewarded. The reverse is also true. When effective leadership is modeled and rewarded, subordinates will mimic the positive behavior. This phenomenon is referred to as "social contagion." With this understanding, if great leadership practices are highlighted and celebrated in an inclusive environment, then delegating to those in lower- level positions becomes easier. Delegation improves workload efficiency and assures subordinates that leaders believe in their ability to take on higher functions. Thus, subordinates feel empowered to accept even more challenging responsibilities.

19

Of course, when delegating to subordinates, there are still several considerations to keep in mind: 1) High-priority responsibilities should be completed by the leaders to whom the duties belong. 2) Leaders should be familiar with the strengths and challenges of each subordinate and delegate responsibilities that will ensure everyone’s success. 3) Assigned tasks should present a challenge to the designee. Delegation becomes easier over time as followers grow their capabilities and can take on more demanding responsibilities. Following these guidelines will promote positive teamwork that propels

ARE YOU PRODUCTIVE OR JUST BUSY? By Kevin Pendergrass

We hear it all the time, don’t we? You know what I am talking about. A typical conversation these days seems to center around how “busy” we all are. Does the following sound familiar? “How have you been doing?” "I’ve just been really busy! How about yourself?” “Yeah, I have been really busy too.” We live in a society where the dominating presupposition is that being busy means we are being productive. The logic follows that the busier you are, the more productive you will be. However, such is not the case. Research has shown the exact opposite to be true, and that busyness actually makes you less productive (Forbes, Mar. 29th, 2016).

23

For the sake of this article, I want to focus on the concept of being “busy” when it comes to your business--especially as it pertains to marketing. Have you ever met that person who is at every event and involved in every networking group possible? They are the person always rushing around trying to get to the next event, and when you are speaking with them you can tell their mind is somewhere else. Let me give you 3 reasons why this is not a good habit for business people: Reason #1: You don’t have time to reflect upon and measure your ROI. When you are keeping yourself constantly busy, you don’t have the time to examine the results of what you are doing. You will convince yourself that what you are doing is essential and continue to press forward. Unfortunately, when you do this, you are missing out on what matters the most: results. Reason #2: You will have a lack of focus. When you are going in a million different directions, you have no time to focus. David Meyer, from the University of Michigan, published a study showing that multitasking increases the time it takes you to finish both tasks by 25%. “Multitasking is going to slow you down, increasing the chances of mistakes,” Meyer said. “Disruptions and interruptions are a bad deal from the standpoint of our ability to process information.” (Forbes, Mar. 29th, 2016). Reason #3: You will have added stress. When you think of someone who is always busy, you typically think of someone who is always stressed. Being constantly stressed has some major negative personal consequences on both body and mind, but for this article I want to stick to the consequences it has in your business. If you are stressed, chances are those around you will become stressed. This means that the environment you create for yourself and others will not be as productive as it could be. This will not only hinder your own productivity, but could also hinder the productivity of those around you.

WELLNESS THE NATURAL WAY BY

RICK

MAKOWSKI

This is the a follow up on the previous article of Wellness, the Natural Way and will highlight how to use Essential Oils (EOs) safely. A refresh from the first article is that Wellness is a mindset emphasizing remaining healthy or preventing sickness vs. just treating symptoms/diseases. Mother Nature has a variety of natural tools in her wellness “tool kit; learning how to use them can be an excellent complement to the modern methods we are most familiar with. First a caution! Today we are constantly bombarded by advertisements and claims of EOs and see many products we use in everyday life (air fresheners/sprays, detergents, candles, soaps) that incorporate EOs and tout their benefits. This marketing fad can be dangerous for several reasons: it gives people a false sense of security they are being healthier by using that product, the EO/natural product is most likely not processed/tested for health effectiveness, and it may actually contain fillers, synthetics, and other chemicals that may be counter to any good health benefits. If you have embraced the Wellness mindset described in the first article, you will proceed with caution on the current fad and use/benefits of these products.

26

Plant extracts and EOs have been used for hundreds of years to help promote a healthy lifestyle. The first step in safety is the quality and testing behind the product. Many products claim “pure and natural” but also state in the packaging or on the bottle: “for aromatic use only”; i.e. not for topical or ingestion. For example, Orange; if you can only smell a “pure and natural” Orange product, but cannot eat it, that should trigger a caution. Then, if you cannot taste or eat it, why would you even want to inhale the aroma? There are, however, certain plant extracts that are not meant for ingestion, but surely not a real Orange. The next step in safety is the dosage. A high quality pure EO is very concentrated, so a little goes a long way. For instance, one drop of peppermint EO is equivalent to about 28 cups of peppermint tea. EOs are absorbed and metabolized quickly in the body (within a few hours), so a good rule of thumb is; less is better, then if needed, add another drop within recommended guidelines of the particular EO. Also depending on what you are trying to achieve, frequency of use may be more effective than additional quantity.

Mother Nature has a variety of natural tools in her wellness “tool kit" 27

Next, dilution is key and depends on age and sensitivity. Since EOs are very potent, precautions are recommended (especially for use with children or older adults). An EO may need to be diluted with a quality carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil, almond, olive, etc.) to increase the surface area of application, to reduce skin sensitivities, or slow down the absorption of the EO. There are 3 basic methods of using EOs in increasing order of application concentration which also factors into the safety of dosage and dilution; aromatic, topical and internal.

Aromatic: Smelling the EO is a very simple way to experience the benefits either out of the bottle, on a cotton ball, or EO approved diffuser. Topical: Placed directly on the skin/body for absorption (with or without a carrier oil for dilution). Internal: Taken internally in a glass of water or a vegetable gel capsule.

The next article will address these further, to include reflex points. This article is intended for your personal use and informational purposes only. You should consult with a physician before beginning any exercise, fitness, diet, or nutrition routine, especially if pregnant or have pre-existing health conditions. Nothing contained in this article should be considered as medical advice or diagnosis.
