C E L E B R A T I N G 75 Y E A R S o f pa s sion, e x p e r ti se a n d e x cel l e nce As we prepare for our favourite time of the year, we can reflect on what has been a truly memorable anniversary year for Allum & Sidaway. Our story began in 1942 with my Great Grandfather Dennis Allum mending clocks and watches from a shed in the garden… now we have five unique jewellery stores, a fantastic team and the best customers!
In July, a brave group from the A&S team took up a Wing walking Challenge, raising an incredible £8000 for the Weldmar Hospice in Dorset. We also raised money for the Alzheimer’s Society by donating our watch battery sales during August and a group of friends, colleagues and canine pals completed a Charity Walk in the New Forest.

2017 has been an overwhelming award winning year, both locally and nationally. In June we scooped a regional awards double, winning both the Retailer of the Year and Excellence in Customer Service categories in the South Wilts Business of the Year Awards, held at the City Hall in Salisbury.

My Fiancé proposed on a mountain side in France, with a three stone diamond ring. It has a round brilliant stone in the centre and pear shaped stones on each side. It’s perfect for me; unique with very sparkly diamonds. The stones are set in platinum which is the most durable metal and stays white. For my wedding band, I will be looking at platinum to match, and a relatively simple style, so as to not detract from the engagement ring.
My Fiancé chose the ring; I wanted something classic and traditional; fortunately he knew what I liked! I love that it reminds me of my mum’s engagement ring. Ever since I was young I wanted a yellow gold ring; it suits my skin tone better than white gold.

DIAMOND CLUSTER RING
SAPPHIRE & DIAMOND RING My choice is a sapphire and diamond three stone ring. I had never considered a coloured stone before but it really stood out in our window display. My thenboyfriend, with a helping hand from our Gillingham team, secretly purchased it a long time before he popped the question.
My engagement ring is quite an unusual cluster ring, it has two baguette cut stones in the centre with eight round brilliant cut diamonds surrounding them, on an 18ct yellow gold band. I didn’t pick it as such, we happened to pop into the Salisbury store and I saw it in white gold, and really loved it because it’s completely different!
The sapphire is a square step cut with round brilliant diamonds each side. It’s set in 18ct yellow gold; I chose yellow gold because it’s timeless.
I’m a traditional girl and love yellow gold, plus it highlights the white diamonds beautifully and ties in with most of my jewellery collection.
Working with so many sparkling diamonds, I knew I wanted to enhance my engagement ring with more diamonds! My wedding ring is set with 9 round diamonds and has a slight curve that sits perfectly next to my engagement ring.
My advice; do your research; it’s good to have an idea of what she likes before you come in. If you can, ask her friends or family; those who can be trusted with the secret!
My advice; listen to any hints and try to view a selection, to be able to see comparisons. Make sure you disclose any hobbies and occupation so you can be advised on the best metal and setting for the ring.

THREE STONE DIAMOND RING I spotted ‘Dream Ring’ in Salisbury the night we were setting up the new flagship store. As soon as I put it on I knew it was the one! It’s a modern classic, in platinum & diamond. I’ve heard that the meaning behind a three stone is to represent the past, present and the future, which I love! The metal choice is platinum; being so hardwearing this is perfect for me as I’m quite clumsy!

I adore pear cut gemstones and as a jewellery designer, have always known that I would want something unusual for my engagement ring!
My wedding ring will be a diamond set band in platinum to match my engagement ring, the more sparkle the better! My engagement ring is wed fit, meaning that the setting of the diamonds is designed to sit slightly higher, so a wedding band will slot neatly beside it.
My Fiancé chose it as he loved the symbolism of the two interconnecting bands. It is made in platinum which gives me great confidence to wear it whatever I am doing.
My advice; try to get hold of any images your partner has shown you from Pinterest and Instagram and bring them to show us, it gives us a clear idea of her tastes. Also, choose platinum if you can; I can personally recommend its hard wearing properties.

GOLDSMITH Q&A Repairing and servicing jeweller y, watches and clocks has always been an important part of our business. We talked to our head goldsmith David , about his role. What’s the best bit of your job?
How many years have you had in the jewellery trade?
Seeing the satisfaction on a customer’s face when they are presented with their bespoke, remodelled or repaired item. As we know, jewellery can hold huge sentimental value and people can respond very emotionally when DO YOU HAVE ANY TOP TIPS? they see their item returned to glory. I get great Of course! My brother Simon and I started a jewellery workshop together in 2000 and it has gone from strength to strength. Between us, we have over 60 years in the jewellery trade. Describe a typical day at the bench? We have a team of 5 goldsmiths; all with their own areas of expertise from stone setting through to polishing. Each day, our team carry out general repairs, including ring resizing, repairing broken necklaces, lots of solder work and retipping claw settings on rings. Simon and I work on the bespoke orders and more complex repairs. What are the more unusual jobs? This could be replacing an entire setting on an antique cluster ring, or remodelling a diamond line brooch into several new items of jewellery. Every day is different. Replacing the shank (the main band of a ring) is also becoming increasingly frequent- it’s a great way of retaining the original setting and design of the top of the ring, but reinforcing the piece for years to come. You might notice that the back of a ring band has become thin; best to seek advice at A&S as it is likely a weak spot.
place. Rather like shoes needing to be rehealed, claws need replacing over the years. My advice would be don’t wait until it’s too late; a broken claw can result in losing a gemstone. Often the first indication is that a claw will start catching on clothing - this means it has lifted slightly away from the gemstone and is at risk of catching and breaking. A&S will always check the security of your stones free of charge.
My other tip is stone polishing - not many people know that we can repolish gemstones. It can really transform a piece that has picked up wear and scratches over the years. We work with an award winning polisher and it starts from as little as £40.
What’s your favourite metal to work in? Without a doubt, platinum. Although it’s difficult to work, it’s the best metal for most jobs. It is hard and dense, and requires polishing after each stage in the process of a repair, to give you the perfect end result. If we are re-tipping platinum claw settings on a diamond ring, we know that the precious stone is secured by the best metal possible. It tends to last many more years too. What job do you enjoy the most? I love working with older pieces of jewellery, particularly Victorian and Edwardian era. You often see a fantastic level of craftsmanship. Through studying and working on these items, my team have developed skills to sensitively repair and remodel historical pieces.

One last thing, could you clear up a common misconception, is 18ct gold softer than 9ct gold? Well, 9ct white gold is actually softer than 18ct due to a higher portion of softer metals that the 9ct gold is mixed with, whereas 18ct gold is 75% pure gold, so less alloys. Yellow gold is different but, if given the choice, you should still opt for 18ct; it’s more precious with better properties. All of our stores offer a full range of repairs services. WATC H E S Q & A Looking to purchase a pre-owned timepiece? We’ve quizzed our Salisbur y store manager and watch expert Paul Lewis for his best advice in what to look for… What makes of watch are in demand and hold their value? The obvious answer is Rolex but demand varies wildly between models. In fact some Rolex that have become the best investments are those which were very unpopular when new, e.g. the original 1960s Milgauss. Less popular brands have models that often out perform their more famous counterparts, for example the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. What should a customer look for when purchasing a pre-owned watch? The most important thing is to have confidence in whom you are buying from. A quality watch should last a lifetime and beyond, but is a complicated thing with often 200 plus parts. Is the seller going to be around to help after the initial warranty ends and be there to help you trade up or down in the future? Does the manufacturer have a good reputation for providing parts and fixing their older models? I have been buying and selling luxury watches for over 25 years £5995 and have built my reputation on honesty, integrity and understanding the ever-changing market. Another rule with collecting is buy what you like then wait - so at least you are living with something you enjoy looking at in the meantime. One of the most popular brands we sell pre-owned is Cartier, it’s an aspirational watch with timeless and iconic designs. What should they be aware of? Once you have found a seller you are comfortable with you can relax a little in terms of choosing the individual watch - part of what you pay for when buying from a professional seller is that they have
done all of the homework and checking for you. Other than the aesthetics you should consider what the watch will be like to live with. Will the type of movement and functions suit my pattern of wear? Branded boxes and papers can add value but ultimately it’s about the watch itself and condition. What brands do you stock? We stock all of the major Swiss brands including Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Breitling, Jaeger le Coultre, and Panerai. We have a network of trusted contacts from whom we can source pretty much anything you would like. Our offering is ever changing- so check the window each time you pass or, better still, come and chat to me. What would your dream watch be? For any watch nut this is an impossible question!... At the moment I am focussed on finding a nice Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch from my birth year. The design is timeless and given that the cost is going to be high it will need to be something I won’t tire of. In addition, it is nice to consider that the watch on my wrist will have been on the earth as long £4650 as me and indeed will outlast me hopefully to be enjoyed by my son one day.
