120 YEAR ANNIVERSARY At Johnsons Jewellers we are proud to be celebrating our 120th anniversary this year.

Founded by Harold Johnson in 1897 with humble beginnings, our shop was originally located in the Abbey Green area of Nuneaton, before moving to its present location in Queens Road. Four generations of the Johnsons family have since worked tirelessly to showcase some of the most beautiful jewellery pieces and high quality watches that the jewellery industry has to offer. Our business is still in the hands of the Johnson family; Robert, Pam, Libby and Catherine each have an active role in the company and are passionate about upholding our reputation as one of the finest jewellers in the Midlands. We have extended our shop considerably over the years. When our business relocated to the Queens Road site after the Second World War, the shop was a small single entry premises and the Johnson family lived on the first floor. In the 1980s major developments took place and a large extension was carried out to the side of the building, where the shop grew in size and could therefore offer a wider range of product. In 1999 we purchased the building next door, which had previously been Harding’s Bakery. This gave us the opportunity to expand once more and to open a separate business called Tikk. The stylish shop sold gadgets, silver jewellery and fashion watches, and even a Billy Bass singing fish was known to adorn the walls.

Over the years we decided that both shops needed to be refreshed and so in 2010 we merged the shops to give us an even larger shop floor space, which is where you will find us today. Every single diamond and piece of jewellery that we sell in store is hand selected by the Johnson family, as we visit suppliers and shows throughout the year to bring you jewellery that you won’t find in other high street jewellers. We take pride in looking for that unique piece that you will take pleasure in wearing for years. We are your local independent family jewellers, bringing you fine jewellery and an extensive collection of watches for those milestone events and memories to be made. We want shopping with us to be an enjoyable and relaxing experience, a sentiment we have held for the last 120 years. While our store may have expanded over the years and changed in appearance, our values and warm traditional service have remained the same. Our wonderful, loyal customers have made our business what we are today. With your continued support, we will continue to offer great customer service and beautifully made jewellery and watches for many more decades to come.

We take pride in looking for that unique piece that you will take pleasure in wearing for years.

While our store may have expanded over the years and changed in appearance, our values and warm traditional service have remained the same.

CLASSIC ITALIAN STYLE Libby Johnson catches up with Michele Battaglioli, Head of European Sales at Chimento. Please could you tell me a little more about Chimento? Chimento was born in 1964 in Grisignano di Zocco, a small village in the north of Italy, around 30 km from Venice. Grisignano di Zocco is part of the Vicenza county, which has a very old tradition in jewellery manufacturing. Today Vicenza is the venue for a main jewellery exhibition and they recently opened the first museum for jewellery in Italy to celebrate the local know-how and skills of jewellery manufacturing. Chimento has always been a family run company with a strong commitment to the local area. The Company has changed in the last 53 years due to global competition, new sales channels, different needs from the clients, etc. However, the business ethic and the family values still remain the same: Mr Mario Chimento (son of Adriano Chimento, the founder) is owner of the company and he operates the brand Chimento today. How many stockists do you have worldwide? Our main market is Italy, which represents 50% of global sales. In the last 20 years, the brand has developed an exclusive distribution network worldwide;: as well as the 400 points of sales in Italy, we have almost 400 Partners in Europe 8

(including the 50 in UK) and 100 in the rest of the world (USA, Canada, Latin America, Middle East). On International markets, Chimento represents the “authentic Italian gold” with its timeless design and contemporary touch. The product is consistent with a strong eye for details, product quality and a focus on hand made manufacturing. What is your favourite piece of jewellery? I really love the DOUBLE collection, which includes different lines (CLASSIC, JOIN, SPRING, )From the ‘70s, Chimento is known for its versatile jewellery, which offers the opportunity to wear the same element of jewellery in different ways to adapt to the outfit or the occasion. The DOUBLE collection, specifically, is a line of reversible bracelets and necklaces: one side yellow and one side white. The effect is a particular area that Chimento specializes in .Any element is made by two halves of different alloy colors, which are soldered together and then assembled by hand to make the desired bracelet or the necklace. My wife finds them very functional when she is travelling for work, as she brings only one item of jewellery, but she

can use it in different ways. Same for my Mum when she takes a cruise: she has a warm yellow gold necklace for the day and she turns in elegant white gold for the gala dinner in the evening. What is your role in the business? I joined Chimento in 2014 as Export Manager for UK, France and Northern Europe. I have been working in the UK since 2008 for different jewellery companies and I love travelling from Cornwall to Scotland, exploring main cities and small villages. From 2016 I was appointed by the Family as Sales Director, both for Italy and International markets. I miss my frequent business trips to UK, but I enjoyed the opportunity to deepen my knowledge of the area. How do designers come up with new products? Where do they take their inspiration from? For companies like Chimento, the creative process is the main heart of the business and involves almost any person from within the company. Every day our retail partners collect clear and direct feedback from final consumers. On the other side, the Design Team looks around at future trends and they make their suggestions. As we have had 53 years of celebrated history in the jewellery business, we also check our archive designs. Jewellery is very similar to fashion: things come and go, and fashions can go round in circles. Some of the collections we have re-introduced in the last two years (Stretch Spring or Armillas) have taken inspiration from styles we presented in the ‘80s. We use the same elements, but have reinterpreted them in a different way, to be in line with modern trends. What do you see as your customer demographic? Chimento customer is mainly a lady from around 35 years old, who decides to treat herself, or a gift for her daughter or a friend. She is looking for value for money jewellery with a design that is not going to go “out of fashion in few years. In the UK we also had some requests from customers who have inherited Chimento jewels from their parents and they wish to polish and refurbish the jewellery to wear as they feel design is contemporary and still current. How have things changed as a business over the years. What has Chimento done to adapt to customer influences? Prior to 2008 Chimento produced heavy bracelets and necklaces, however the gold price has changed our designs and the industry as a whole. For this reason, we have adapted our designs to be more feminine and delicate which keep a strong link with the brand core values. We are a family business and our reputation is of upmost importance.

THE HISTORY OF ROLEX The Rolex name is synonymous with quality and prestige, known and respected the world over for its passion for innovation and a constant quest for excellence. Its story began back in 1908, when German watchmaker Hans Wilsdorf coined the name “Rolex” to sign his creations. Hans foresaw that the wristwatch by its very nature was destined to become an everyday necessity – for men as well as for women – provided that it could be a precise, waterproof, robust and reliable instrument. His stroke of genius was to anticipate what is now taken for granted, and to contribute to making the wristwatch what it is today. In 1905, when living in London – then the economic and financial capital of the world – and observing the remarkable rise in leisure time and the practice of sports, Hans set out to prove to a still sceptical public that wristwatches and precision timekeeping were compatible. His quest was soon crowned with resounding success. In 1910, a Rolex wristwatch obtained the first certificate in the world granted to such a watch by the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne, Switzerland. Four years later, a similar model received the first “Class A” certificate accorded to a wristwatch from the prestigious Kew Observatory in England, a distinction until then reserved for marine chronometers. This was proof that wristwatches and chronometric precision could go hand in hand. The next challenge was waterproofness. The precision of the

wristwatch would be seriously compromised if its case did not keep out water and dust. After moving to Geneva, Switzerland, largely for its internationally renowned watchmaking reputation, Hans realised the potential of the wristwatch for the 20th century. In 1926, he created and launched the iconic Rolex Oyster – the very first waterproof wristwatch and now a pillar of a collection of legendary watches, among the most recognised and recognisable in the world. Thanks to the Oyster and its totally innovative waterproof case, Rolex stepped firmly into watchmaking history. After chronometric precision and waterproofness, Hans sought to complete the third key feature of the Oyster model, the self-winding mechanism. As long as a wristwatch had to be wound by hand daily, its crown had to be unscrewed, compromising its waterproofness and therefore its precision. In 1931, Rolex invented the first wristwatch self-winding system with a free rotor, named the Perpetual rotor, wound by the wearer’s arm movements alone. The Perpetual rotor made manual winding a thing of the past. As of 1926 and the invention of the Oyster, the world became a proving ground for Rolex to validate the intrinsic qualities of its watches under real-life conditions. Wherever extreme conditions prevail, on the seas or in the depths of the oceans,

Rolex invented the first wristwatch selfwinding system with a free rotor, named the Perpetual rotor, wound by the wearer’s arm movements alone.

38

Watc h e s / Ro le x Watch e s

on the highest mountain tops or in polar regions, Rolex has continuously tested the precision, waterproofness, robustness and reliability of its timepieces. Take Sir Malcolm Campbell, who in 1935, at the wheel of his specially built record-breaking car Bluebird, became the first man to reach the mythical speed of 300 mph (approximately 480 km/h) with an Oyster on his wrist. In 1947, the first pilot to break the sound barrier, at the controls of a rocket-powered aircraft, was also wearing a Rolex Oyster. From the 1930s, the Oyster was worn on numerous Himalayan expeditions, including the 1953 expedition team featuring Sir Edmund Hillary, who were the first to reach the summit of Everest. In the 1940s and 1950s, Rolex launched watches of great prestige that would be worn by influential figures and would very rapidly become timeless classics of the Oyster collection. The year 1945 saw the birth of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust, the first self-winding wrist chronometer to indicate the date in a window on the dial. A watch of great distinction, equipped with a fluted bezel and a Jubilee bracelet created specially for it, the Datejust was immediately recognisable. In 1956 the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date made its debut. It was the first wristwatch to display the day of the week spelt out in full in a window on the dial in addition to the date. Available only in platinum or 18ct gold, it has always featured a crystal with a Cyclops lens that enlarges the date for easy reading. Rolex continued to demonstrate innovation throughout the 1950s and developed the concept of tool-watches called “Professional” watches, which feature dedicated functions for specific activities such as diving and flying – an important

element of the Oyster collection that continues to this day. The year 1960 was marked by the sad death of Hans Wilsdorf. He left a considerable legacy and had the genius to ensure the lasting success of his accomplishments. A watchmaking house built on vision and innovation, Rolex has since been transformed into a universal watch brand, one of the most prestigious in the world. In 1968, under its new guidance, Rolex created the Cellini collection, inspired by the great Renaissance artist Benvenuto Cellini, sculptor and goldsmith to the popes – a name that befittingly evokes the refined classicism of these elegant timepieces. This iconic range includes all the non-Oyster dress watches offered by the brand over the subsequent years. Today Rolex remains at the forefront of the watchmaking art, still innovating and regularly launching a new generation of innovative and patented movements and technologies. All of the new Oyster and Cellini models developed in recent years are the exemplary product of a completely integrated and independent watchmaking company, built on uncompromising values, with unparalleled means to perpetuate Rolex’s passion for perfection.

Rolex and the Oyster continue to write some of the most fascinating chapters in the history of watchmaking. 39
