itama 45 The essence of freedom
by Fact ME
Dubbed the ‘classic of classics’ – the Itama 45 promises comfort, liveability and maximum enjoyment of the outdoors.
ITAMA a brand of the Ferretti Group popular for the unique style of its open yachts, has reached another important objective with delivery of the first Itama 45 yacht in Lebanon. Entirely constructed at the shipyards of the Ferretti Group in Forlì, the new 45 model, a further evolution of the best selling Forty is again a creation of Marco Casali.
The new 45 breaks new frontiers, thanks to the new aft sweeping stern, large view windows for the cabins, and added features such as the invisible hydraulic gangway integrated into the hull, and bathing platform which can lower into the water.
The predominantly white colour scheme, generous windows and airy, light-filled spaces lend the interiors a bright and uplifting atmosphere. The Itama 45 can be built with one or two guest cabins, while the master cabin is always at the bow, and furnished with a walk-around double bed. In the two-cabin version the dinette – which can be converted into two comfortable berths – is on the port side and the galley is to starboard, while the second cabin is located aft.

If you want a good sea keeper with a classic no-frills design, the Itama 45 won’t disappoint.
Power is derived from twin Cummins 480hp engines with traditional line shafts, which take the classic deep 22° V-hull shape up to a maximum speed of 33 knots.

The interiors, in line with the main principles of the brand’s philosophy, feature relevant style innovations, such as the strong prevalence of the white colour, i.e. white lacquered wood, with blinds and teak flooring, in contrast with the black colour of the helm station.

The cockpit is designed to make the most of all available space, enhancing the comfort and liveability of the outdoor areas. An inviting sofa, extendable table and roomy sun-pad allow maximum enjoyment of the open air. The new lighting also lends a chic and modern touch to the cockpit.
If you want a classic no-frills design, heavy build and a good sea-keeper – this is undoubtedly the classic of classics, and the improvements made make sure she will remain so for another decade.

The teams arrived in Abu Dhabi in December, which was the end of the second leg of the race.
ThE VolVo Ocean Race is the world’s longest professional sporting event and the leading offshore sailing competition. The race began in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Race, and though a lot has changed since then, the essence of the race remains exactly the same and it is well established as one of the Big Three global sailing events along with the America’s Cup and the Olympics.
Seven crews will battle it out across nine months and nine legs, with the boats covering 38,739nautical miles (71,745 km/44,580 miles), crossing the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Southern Oceans, and visiting 11 countries in five continents: Spain, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, China, New Zealand, Brazil, United States, Portugal, France, The Netherlands and Sweden.

The crews
The seven teams competing across the nine months of the race are: Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing from the UAE; Team Alvimedica, the US/Turkish youth challenge; Team Brunel, the Dutch campaign; Dongfeng Race Team, a Chinese entry; Team SCA, the first all-female team in over a decade; MAPFRE; and the Danish entry, Team Vestas Wind.
In the race so far, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing has taken the lead, winning leg one from Spain to South Africa, and are as we write battling in the top three, all within 30nm of each other, for the win in leg two in the race to their home port of Abu Dhabi.
The crews are made up of eight sailors and one non-sailing embedded journalist, the Onboard Reporter who is responsible for capturing the stories and adventures taking place onboard with images, video and text - a task billed as one of the toughest jobs in global media. And it is courtesy of these journalists that you’re seeing the incredible images we’ve brought you on these pages. Life onboard a Volvo Ocean 65 is as extreme as it gets. Unbearable temperatures, hostile weather and rough sailing conditions, constant dampness, sleep deprivation, one pair of clothes, restricted communications with the outside world and sustained competitiveness accompany the sailors for up to 25 days at a time.

The reward
As with the Olympic Games, there is no financial reward for winning the 38,739 nautical-mile race, yet no set of sailing honours can be complete without victory in the Volvo Ocean Race.

The prize - the Volvo Ocean Race trophysymbolizes the glory of winning what is still one of the most extreme challenges in the world of sport.
