ERGONOMICS
DPP has been in touch with Phottix since the company set foot in the Philippines several years ago. For the past two-three years, Phottix has evolved from ‘just the accessory’ to a-more-serious’ photography brand that doesn’t only offers solution, but also provides long-term satisfaction. The newest product, the Indra500, is a TTL Battery Powered Studio Light that is driven by 10 | LUMINOSITY
portability, flexibility and power. It’s an upgrade from the reliable PPL400. Both power cordfree and sync cord-free, the Indra500 has the Odin receivers for Nikon and Canon cameras built-into every unit. This unit starts with a flash head with all the qualities of a studio flash such as 500Ws of power, adjustable from 1/128 to full power over an 8 stop range.
The Indra’s size is relatively small but feels solid. It lives to Phottix’s promise of portability with its products. The monolight has a frosted dome over the flash bulb and the package comes with a regular reflector for either normal use or for focus the beam. The Indra500 has a Bowen’s type of mount for easier modifying purposes. On top of the light is an umbrella holder with a screw lock; this finishes the design at the front. Moving to the rear, you will see an LED panel that works as the command center of the light. It has four buttons for menu selection, a green dial button for rotational selection (can also be pressed), with the power button and modelling light beside it. The monolight has also a handle for easy moving and a couple of ports (power cable, radio trigger, and a USB port for firmware upgrades). To power the Indra500, you should connect the power cable to the new battery pack. The battery pack has two ports, a switch that gives the option of the standard use or high-speed sync, and a USB 2.0 for multiple purposes — we used it as a power bank for our smartphones!

TTL Most studio lights function only in manual camera modes, limiting their use in fastmoving environments. The Indra500 TTL opens up new creative possibilities, allowing photographers to shoot in shutter and aperture priority modes while taking advantage of their camera's auto-exposure technology. The TTL can do +/- 3EV with effective distances up to 30 feet outdoor. As of now, TTL only works for Canon and Nikon. We do hope that it’ll support other brands too!
Updatable The Indra500 TTL offers a USB port for future firmware upgrades. As camera technology changes the Indra can change along with it too.
after 4 hours of consistent shooting. Throughout our shoot, the Indra500 was consistent and fast. Moving to different locations offered no problems at all.
USAGE
CONCLUSION
High Sync Speeds Traditional studio lights have sync speeds limited to 1/200-1/250 sec., making balancing flash and ambient light levels problematic for photographers. The Phottix Indra's High Speed Sync function allows speeds up to 1/8,000 sec. for a much wider exposure latitude. Flash Bracketing Instead of altering the look of your shot by changing your aperture or shutter speed, let the Indra automatically vary its power to get lighter and darker shots around your prime exposure. Stroboscopic Mode This mode allows you to capture sequential action by varying the Hertz rate from 1-100 Hz and the flash frequency from 1-100 times per exposure.
We took the Indra500 to an outdoor shoot to see its performance. Let’s start off with the menu system. It takes some time to master the system. For the most part, users must learn the 4-part cycle through the menus and the green dial selects the options. It also pays to learn the Phottix ecosystem to maximize the usage of the Indra500. Everything else is a breeze. For our test, we used a Sony A99. Unfortunately, the Indra500’s full range of options are only available for Nikon and Canon at this moment. But other brands can still use it. In our case we triggered the monolight with the Atlas II triggers and it worked perfectly. If you don’t have Phottix triggers, other models can work too without control over the light or TTL option. If you’re a Canon or Nikon user, then we suggest to use the Odin Trigger. This not only controls the power of the light from your trigger, but also speeds up the powering up or down process when you do a shoot. This is the power of TTL. In an outdoor setting where you have to tame the sun, you should have a high powered flash. To compensate for this setting, we had the Indra500’s power at 1/1 to 1/2. The results were consistent, with a recycle time of 2 seconds and only 25% of the power was used
The previous PPL-400 was reliable, effective and consistent. But the Indra500 exceeds the expectation of an upgrade. Although it took a while for Phottix to release a monolight like this, the wait has been worth it. The Indra500 is jam-packed with features, feels tough, and is much cheaper than competitors in it's class. We wish that its full capacity can be maximized by shooters that use Sony, Fuji and Pentax also.
Later this year, Indra500’s little brother will be launched in the market — the Indra360. Same features, same portability. 360 watts of power for indoor or outdoor use.
