In this role she has enhanced key elements of the educational curriculum and redesigned the process for selecting fellows to augment the progam’s commitment to DEI both through holistic review and the interview evaluation process. Dr. Zapata developed a new department of public health rotation and leads the division’s efforts to teach UME learners topics on addressing serious illness throughout their time in medical school. “Dr. Zapata is an exceptional teacher and educational leader who has had a tremendous impact in the classroom and programmatically,” Division Chief Dr. Steven Pantilat said. “She embodies the best of what we strive to promote in our clinician educators as someone who lives and practices the values she and we care about most.”

Dr. Zaat is Associate Professor of Pediatrics and a pediatric hospitalist at Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, where she serves as the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education and an Associate Program Director of the Pediatrics Residency Program. As the sole physician with a formal UME title in Oakland, she manages visiting student applications and the MS4 advance core and elective catalog, and serves as site director for the third year core pediatrics clerkship. Within GME, she works on curriculum development, pipeline recruitment and academic support for learners in need of individualized learning plans. Dr. Sandrijn van Schaik, Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Pediatrics says, “Dr. Zaat is an energetic, enthusiastic educator who is an outstanding teacher, a creative curriculum developer, and a collaborative leader. She has done a phenomenal job expanding and optimizing the opportunities for UCSF students at BCH Oakland.”

They have developed an intensive and objective interview process and scoring algorithm for the residency candidates. “This team cares deeply about the UCSF Orthotics and Prosthetics residents and their experience" stated one nominator. "They view the residency as a critical milestone in a path to training excellent orthotic and prosthetic clinicians. Christina Cicoletti, MA

As Executive Director for Assessment, Curriculum, and Evaluations (ACE), Christina is an extraordinary contributor to the UCSF education mis sion. Eight teams report to her, ranging from Inquiry, PRIME, Evaluations, Assessment, and F2/Career Launch. Christina focuses on providing a coordinated approach to supporting the School of Medicine curriculum and its students' success. Christina demonstrates a nuanced under standing of medical education, school and campus policies, and guiding principles. She mentors her direct reports and their team members with empathy and compassion and approaches every challenge with a com mitment to doing the best for students while ensuring that staff are sup ported, appreciated, and rewarded for their excellence. Her nominators note, “Christina’s positive can-do attitude is infectious. Even when her unit experienced staffing shortages, it was not apparent as there was no reduction in the quality or quantity of work produced by her and her team. When Christina hears of a problem, she quickly frames the key issues and identifies the individuals who need to be involved or consulted in crafting a solution. By engaging the right stakeholders, she helps the OME unit overcome resistance or fear of change and leverages the right talent for the particular situation.”

Exceptional Service Award in Medical Education

Tricia Rose is an internationally respected, awardwinning scholar of post-civil rights era Black U.S. culture, social issues and gender.

Professor Rose’s ground-breaking book, Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America, was the first significant analysis of hip hop as an expression of Black cultural and technological innovation in the context of urban disinvestment and decline – and is considered the definitive foundational text in the field. Among its many accolades, Black Noise was recognized by Black Issues in Higher Education as one of the ‘Top Books of the 20th Century.’

Rose’s lectures on systemic racism have positively influenced a wide range of international audiences and stakeholder groups – academ ic, corporate, non-profit, governmental and more.

In 2006 Professor Rose joined the faculty at Brown, where she now serves as Chancellor’s Professor of Africana Studies, Director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, and Associate Dean of the Faculty for Special Initiatives.

Keynote Speaker Tricia Rose, PhD

Born and raised in Harlem and the Bronx in New York City, Professor Rose earned a BA in Sociol ogy at Yale and a PhD in American Studies at Brown University. She has held faculty appoint ments at Rutgers, NYU and UC Santa Cruz.

Her aim is to help leaders and their teams understand how systemic racism – rather than individual racial animus or bias – shapes complex decisions and outcomes across an organization’s internal and external environments – thereby enabling a more informed perspective to drive equitable, effective, and sustainable growth.

Her latest project – which includes an upcoming new book, as well as an interactive multimedia experience funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation – shines a clarifying spotlight on how systemic racism works in ProfessorAmerica.
