THE FALLING LEAVES
Hospitality Design
I chose the falling leaves to be my concept for the space which is located in San Francisco, CA. From photographing the falling leaves, I noticed that they create an organic pathway formed by nature. They add a splash of colors and warmth to the sidewalk. Also, the journey from the branches to the ground is a very quiet movement that can be seen visually only, which creates serenity. The falling leaves symbolize multiple elements that are perfect to be used in the spa. For example, the end and a start of a new cycle, it’s the same idea as people visit the spa to relax, and feeling refreshed afterwards. The rest of these elements are calm, peaceful, quiet, reflection, and transformation.
Site Analysis
The Neighborhood Today The project is located in the heart of downtown San Francisco. It is a 7,236 sq. ft. two-story historical building in the city. It is on the corner of Powell & Sutter Street, where most of the tourists and local people gather. The area is full of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, hotels, hostels, etc. I chose to design a spa because I tend to design spaces that are more unique. The spa is going to be a place where they can relax and isolate themselves from the noise and the busy city.

Food & drinks will be served in the spa. Only organic and vegetarian will be provided. Also, a small open kitchen for customers to make their own snacks, which makes the visit affordable and attracts the hipster crowd, which considered as the majority of population of San Francisco. Also, the interaction between the space and people has a personal attachment that’s welcoming, especially when the place provides a healthy way of living.

Since the building was built in 1913, it has a lot of existing columns as part of the structure and there is no way to remove any of them. So, the columns were an obstacle that I faced during the design process. I wanted to create something interesting and visually appealing. I decided to have built-in LED lights in each column that in a spiral form to mimic the movement of the falling leaves.

Having most of the materials on the floor had a purpose. Alike the organic movement of the leaves arranging on the sidewalk or the ground once fallen, the materials used have a subtlety in pattern and hue. San Francisco is filled with people from all over the world, so I mixed multiple materials together to emphasize that in my design. Such as the wood was inspired by the Japanese culture, the marble from the Greek bath, and the olive green is a natural color that adds an organic feeling to the space.

Concept Statement
Haute couture was my concept for an apartment complex that I designed. I chose this concept because the space was used by a successful couple, Maria & Gino who work from home and like to entertain friends at their place. Also, they like to collect art pieces. Even though I designed the space to be functional, I still wanted to include a high end feeling in the space using haute couture as concept. I designed the space as if it was a dress, the art and furniture pieces are the embellishments that add beauty to the actual design.

The Neighborhood Today The space is located on the Western part of San Francisco, located South of Presidio and east of the Richmond District. The feel and spontaneity throughout the neighborhood is somewhat that same as in the Mission. There are residences, retail shops, markets and businesses entirely intermingling. It is far enough that it has its own style, culture and advantages from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco city. There are a lot of family homes, schools and the California Pacific Medical Center which may entail that the there is a combination of middle to upper class neighborhoods. It is an ideal place for people to shop, indulge in the delicacies of a restaurant or cafe and even do their grocery shopping.

Mixing unexpected colors and materials is what Haute Couture all about. For instance, the peachy velvet and dark blue are a combination that we are not usually familiar with. But, surprisingly work well together. The main walls and floors were kept to be black and white to mimic the runway, the design and furniture pieces were meant to showcase as high fashion.
Concept Statement
Silk Road was the perfect concept for the interior designer Ernie Mariotto’s apartment. He is a professional interior designer who teaches and works in the design field. He lives by himself and has a great collection of art pieces. Relating back to the concept, Silk Road was used to trade articles between Asia and Europe. So, the space has different cultures and unique colors throughout.

The Neighborhood Today Dolores Park is one of the most popular parks in the city of San Francisco. The location is one of the reasons that makes Dolores Park very unique and desirable for the public. Also, the site has activities that always open to the public to enjoy such as a huge playground for kids, and four tennis courts. The park serves more than 2500 people during holidays, festivals, and special occasions. However, after mentioning all these great features, Dolores Park has only one public restroom. The restroom is divided into two separate spaces, female and male, but both only serve one person at a time.

My goal in this design is to connect the building with the nature and create a bonding relationship between them. “Mercato is the Italian word for market. The client is Italian and had requested a design that reflects his Italian background. The Neighborhood Today Mission Bay is one of the blooming neighborhoods in San Francisco, because of its location, it helps the area to have less fog and wind from the rest of the city. Living in a busy city like San Francisco and having the view of the ocean makes it quite unique for most of the people. The area is surrounded by parks for both adult and kids, and dogs where they can enjoy the nature. Also, for those who need to be connected to downtown San Francisco or further than that, the neighborhood has two train lines that travel all the way to the heart of the city. Mission Bay area became a trendy neighborhood, as well as high end restaurants and retails.

The market “little spoon was inspired by the idea of the Italian market and culinary renewal of the past such as the butcher, bakery, and milkman. The interior is meant to highlight the lost arts of the kitchen and make food an experience personal to the customer, with an aesthetic that represents the culinary and design worlds as the once were, all within a contemporary approach.

One of the requirements that the owner asked for was a design that won’t intimidate people to get in. Also, I designed a dramatic light fixture that is made out of brass wires to attract people to come to the space.

FRAMING
Commercial Design
When I think of framing I imagine hard edges, square, rectangle shapes, and lines. We usually use framing just to emphasize on an object that we want to give it attention or grab people’s attention to it. So in my space I would apply it in a way to define some areas in abstract way to help way finding for the space. Also, I’m going to add some lines to space that would match with the other material to show how framing can affect the space and can be a feature.

BREADTH Stuff I Enjoy
Risedential Project
A residential project I had the opportunity to work on during my summer break of 2015. The project was for a couple that were recently married in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. They both like to entertain people and needed something different from where they grew up. The first step was to change the space planning. I separated the entertaining area from everything else in the house, I wanted to create a sense of privacy. I added navy blue color to some of the walls in order to give the space some warmth. Also, the color helped to keep the contemporary feel with most of the classic furniture pieces.
Revamp a Chair For Chiraty
It was a one month competition between twenty students from the Academy of art. The goal was to redesign a basic chair in an innovative and creative way, but still functional. My concept for the chair was “current taking over royalty, meaning the new is taking over the old. I use an acrylic board as the back, leather as seat cushion in order to showcase the elegance and contemporary. The legs of the chair were spray painted gold with an ombre effect, shape of the legs was the way it was which relates back to the concept that contemporary is taking over classical design.
DIFFAProject
DIFFA SF was the first chapter of DIFFA with more than 30 years of supporting HIV/AIDS foundation in the San Francisco Bay Area. My team had five members including myself. We had to design a temporary entrance for a DIFFA event. The team won the contest between three universities. it was such an experience I will never forget. For me personally, I thought that was one of the best experience that I had in school, and I was very proud of my school to be part of the event. Our art work is currently being displayed in the UCSF hospital.
