At Gyra, where the sands stretch for miles, the salty sea odour mingles with wafts of scents of the countryside. Meanwhile, Myloi and Agios Ioannis (Ai Giannis) are the choice of preference for those who practise sea sports, since the wind conditions here are particularly suitable. Στην Ανατολική πλευρά, η οργιαστική φύση σμίγει με το απέραντο γαλάζιο και η αρχαία όψη της Λευκάδας συνδιαλέγεται με την πιο σύγχρονη. Στο Καλλιγόνι, περιτριγυρισμένη από αιώνια ελαιόδεντρα, βρίσκεται η πρώτη πρωτεύουσα του νησιού, η αρχαία Νήρικος, όπως μαρτυρούν τα σωζόμενα τείχη και το αρχαίο θέατρο στη θέση Κούλμος. Στον καταπράσινο οικισμό των Καρυωτών, επισκεφτείτε τις Αλυκές Αλεξάνδρου, ένα αξιόλογο βιομηχανικό μνημείο συνυφασμένο άρρηκτα με τη λευκαδίτικη ιστορία. Λίγο πιο κάτω η Λυγιά, ένα παραθαλάσσιο ψαροχώρι, επίνειο του γραφικότατου χωριού της Κατούνας. Προχωρώντας συναντάμε τον Επίσκοπο, τη Νικιάνα και το Περιγιάλι. Στα μέρη αυτά η παρθένα φύση ανταμώνει μικρές, ήσυχες παραλίες με βαθυγάλανα νερά. Στο Νυδρί, θα ανακαλύψετε το κοσμοπολίτικο πρόσωπο του νησιού. Ιδιαιτέρως αναπτυγμένο εδώ και χρόνια -και λόγω του Σκορπιού- προσφέρει πλήθος επιλογών στον επισκέπτη, όπως θαλάσσια σπορ, ενώ στα 4 χλμ. κρυμμένοι μέσα στο αδάμαστο τοπίο βρίσκονται οι εντυπωσιακοί καταρράκτες στη θέση Δημοσάρι. Από το Νυδρί μπορείτε να πραγματοποιήσετε μια ημερήσια εκδρομή με καραβάκι σε γειτονικά νησιά αλλά και σε πάμπολλες παραλίες που δεν είναι προσβάσιμες με τα πόδια. Ο όρμος του Βλυχού, φιλοξενεί πολυάριθμα ιστιοπλοϊκά σκάφη, δημιουργώντας την εντύπωση μιας αισθαντικής υδάτινης χορογραφίας ενώ το Γένι και το Δεσίμι είναι ιδανικές τοποθεσίες για να εξερευνήσετε την αθέατη όψη της ανατολικής Λευκάδας.

The island’s first capital, ancient Nirikos, is at Kalligoni, evidenced by the remnants of the walls and the ancient theatre at Koulmos. At the settlement of Karyotes among its greenery, see Alexander’s Salt Marshes, a valuable monument of industry, closely interwoven with Lefkadian history. Lygia is a little way further down, a seaside fishing village and the harbour of colourful Katouna. Farther along you will find Episkopo, Nikiana and Perigiali. Virginal natural surroundings meet small sleepy beaches with deep blue waters. Nydri is the island’s cosmopolitan spot. It has developed considerably in the last few years – also thanks to Skorpios, Onassis’ island – has much in the way of water sports to offer, while 4 km. away, hidden amid pristine wild woods, the gorgeous waterfalls of Dimossari gush down. From Nydri you can board a little boat for a day trip to neighbouring islands as well as beaches unapproachable on foot. The bay of Vlycho harbours numerous yachts dancing in a liquid choreography of the senses, and Geni and Dessimi are the best spots to view the unseen side of eastern Lefkada.

Finally, Englouvi, Lefkada’s highest village, is well worth a visit as is its plateau, of imposing loveliness and a breathtaking rolling vista.
