Canine Capers movie, more exciting than a pub crawl through Vlicho in February. If you remember it you weren’t there…ah no that was Woodstock. Silly me. Celebrities, celebrities. Who do we get this year? Rumour has it Keanu Reeves is available, but he’s no good I can’t pronounce his name and he’s not very funny anyway, unlike our Sir Peter Andre who when told while going out to sea in a fast RIB, that it would bang about a bit, said “sounds like my ex-wife”. Oooh err. Hope the tabloids don’t pick up
What a blockbuster! Six Oscars, three BAFTAs, a mention on Radio 2 and third prize at the Albanian film festival… upstaged by Norman Wisdom again. I bet he put the dislike on You Tube or maybe it was Donald Trump because I’m blond and better looking than him? Yes I’m talking about the Regattas Through the Years

Lefkas Animal Volunteers feeding etc. We are always looking for Foster homes! We have welfare foundations in Holland and Germany who help us find forever loving homes for these dogs. Obviously this involves substantial expenses as they cannot be rehomed until they are nearly 4 months old and they have to have their vaccinations, microchips, rabies protection and pet passports to travel.
On Lefkas there is a small group of volunteers, expats and locals dedicated to animal welfare. We raise funds to help subsidize the cost to sterilize dogs with the local vets, these being strays from the street and dogs from families struggling from the financial crisis. We also rescue abandoned puppies, this involves finding foster homes, socialisation,

Southern Ionian Rally 2017 Well it's that time again and for my sins I am again organising the rally and regatta week. So here we go 3rd time lucky! After a circumnavigation of France in the camper van, the highlight of which was a few days in Cognac and a visit to the Remy Martin cellars, not to mention river boat jousting... a very bizarre but entertaining activity it's back to boats. Fortunately “Rumba” our main committee boat still floats so keep your eye out for her.
Foulds as senior race officers and Mat Biggs as our computer geek. Also rejoining us this year is Mike OliveJones a well seasoned regatta racer who many of you will remember from our “Jungle” racing days and new to the committee team are Ray and Jan
Fun In The Sun
During the winter I seem to have played a strange variety of roles including the oldest Dorothy on the planet in the Wizard of Oz as well as a naughty Salvation Army girl and it seems I have also now been dubbed the Evil Queen in her Magic Castle so beware not to cross me or I will send the Captain of the Guard to incarcerate you in my dungeons! My great team from last year are back again with Pat Simpson and Gilly
who will be 2nd committee boat in their motor boat.
We will be adopting the latest RYA handicap system this year which we hope you will all be happy with. So I hope you are going to be joining us for 4 days of fun and frolics on the water as well as partying at our usual favourite tavernas at night. Make sure you have brushed up your swimming skills just in case there is no wind again on day 3, otherwise the onesie of shame could be yours!

He should have been called Dyson Devastated after our beloved Fruity died following a road traffic accident at Christmas, we said emphatically no more dogs. Then we said...well at least not another white one. The boat interior is red! I said if we do, it has to be red, or reddish. In early February social media was full of videos and pictures of an adorable lump of fluff in dire need of fostering or indeed adopting. He’d been abandoned in a poor condition. By Valentine’s Day he was on our bed. Our boy was found by a very handsome firefighter near the stadium in Lefkas and taken to Alex Yfantis, one of our fabulous vets in Lefkas. The pup estimated to be around four months old was in a pitiful shape, extremely bony with an enlarged abdomen. Surgery was necessary and together with his colleague Aglaia, Alex discovered a ruptured kidney that had to be removed. More sad news they found that this poor baby had gravel in his intestines. He’d been so hungry he was eating stones! Very quickly Marta Wolf and her wonderful 8 team at Lefkas Animal Volunteers were
brought in to find a family for the Kid. Anybody who had taken on this pup would have been so lucky. What a loving, eager to please, affectionate boy. We feel like we’ve hit the jackpot… even if he is white! Today Kidney is the picture of health and contentment. We love him. He may not have a conventional dogs life as he lives on a boat but we can assure you this boy has all of our love. Being of modest means we were very grateful to Lefkas Animal Volunteers for paying for Kidney’s surgery and fees. I know Alex gives the charities here in Lefkas very charitable rates. So big thanks to Alex and his team too. Here he is nearly four months later and more than double his weight enjoying a dip

This is Leena, she has been on that chain for six years, her ear has been partially eaten away by maggots. We finally found her owner and he has given her up to Lefkas Animal Volunteers. Penny Penny was spotted walking across Lefkas. Four days it took Marta to track her down. She was very very scared, extremely thin and walking not well. When she was taken to the vet, she was checked and thought that perhaps she had been hit by a car..she was too undernourished and traumatised to operate, so they kept her in vet office until she could have operation. After surgery, she had to stay in vets to recuperate, then she was fostered by Vince and Linda. She was still very scared. Slowly slowly her confidence came. She was offered a home in Birmingham by Carrie and her family. it is a long
slow road, for her to gain confidence, as we don’t know her life before, she was very scared of men. Now she loves Carrie's daughter Erin. Is now travelling in the car. We thank those who made generous large anonymous donations to the vet for the amazing operation by Alechos. We thank Vince and Linda for fostering her and Spiros for transporting her to her new home and finally, thank Carrie and her family for the patience and love they are giving to Penny its a lovely story. xx

After a year of treatment for my daughter and a lot of overnight stays in hospital it was lovely to spend some time together as a family. It was a break that we all needed and allowed us to do those normal things that we have sacrificed.” Mum of Molly age 10 Med Sailors doing their bit for Cancer Support The UK charity Sail4Cancer receives great support from water sports companies and individual sailors both at home and abroad, and has a reputation for fun fundraising methods like the “Boot versus Boat” race from London Bridge to Brighton pier. Sail4Cancer’s aim is simple - to provide cancer sufferers and their families with much needed respite care with a nautical flavour, from a gentle day sail near their home to a short cruise or a sailing experience in the sun, and to do so with funds raised by the sailing community. In the Med and Caribbean, sailors’ generosity is often shared in partnership with local charities. Charter flotilla and watersports companies across the Mediterranean work with Sail4Cancer to deliver this aim, with some offering S4C family respite themselves. Charter base staff, flotilla leaders, windsurf instructors and kids on sailing holidays all find “doing something funny/different/ unusual for money” great for breaking down barriers, team building and generally having a memorable and worthwhile time on or near the water. Here is what our beneficiaries say about the respite offered by Sail4Cancer:-
“For the first time in a few months both my daughter and husband smiled and laughed. To see them happy means the world. After all the cancer treatment my daughter has been through to see her relaxed and enjoying herself was so special.” Mum of Taylor age 14
With wide experience in event organising, a great range of info-packs and prizes, and with Ambassadors like Ben Ainsley and Dee Cafari, Sail4Cancer plans to help sailors do for cancer what people like marathon runners and leisure cyclists already do so well!
Editors Note: The Southern Ionian Rally and Regatta supports our 3 main local charities but that doesn’t stop us all digging into our pockets just a little more to help this very worthy cause from the UK. We are sailors. Also note that many local businesses already support Sail4Cancer 22 including Horizon and Neilson

Putting a Line Ashore An idiots Guide At an early stage in my flirtation with sailing, I was asked by our Skipper to put a line ashore. I was marginally the more experienced of our three crew: myself and two cousins, all female. We were in a lovely bay, with a gently sloping shingle beach and a large tree, centre stage, ideal to tie up to.
This was clearly going to be tricky. The line was dangling over the back of the dinghy – where the engine was. I was holding the line in one hand and the throttle in the other. Me and the dinghy drifted slightly away from the yacht. The Hakka had evolved into a breakdance, and following the gestures, I tied the rope to the tree, piled it back in Dinghy and I were now gently circling in the dinghy and set off rowing for the shallow water, but Dinghy was definitely yacht. Many of you will have spotted the ridiculously fast Wldwind catamarans zipping past you as you go around the ouside of Arkoudi Island. They are usually crewed by bronzed athletes whooping and hollering as they zoom past at speeds of up to 20 knots, one hull in the air while standing on the other. These exciting vessels have been competing in the southern Ionian Regatta since it’s conception over 30 years ago and have recently celebrated their own 30 year anniversary in Vasikili with a spectacular array of on the water events and shore based prize giving celebrations and general partying.
The catamarans have their own start line off Camping Kastri near Ammousa and join the yachts as they emerge around the East coast of Arkoudi. The aim is to pass all the yacht and fly on ahead….they always do!! In the Wildwind catamaran regatta the prizes are Line Honours, First with Handicap and First Hobie 16 If you fancy having a go, check out the Wildwind website, where you will find all the info you need. This well established and experienced company always has rave revues, massive return guests and a wonderful reputation….. but for now see you in Sivota!
