Topless Topless tubes of toothpaste could save many a martial fall out. So next time you purchase a tube, make sure you select the squeezy rumpy pumpy type, with no ‘domestic’ creating top to be left off. Ha ha! Got’cha!…just like the naughty little thumb nails piccies found on YouTube videos, that convince you of smutty content, then all you get is another cheeky little kitten falling off a table, instead of the promised glut of Thai lady boys molesting the page three girls from Gardener’s Weekly. 2018 already and our 35th regatta, doesn’t time fly when you are in a permanent alcoholic haze! I get my pension next year….£58 a week, a bus pass and another two steps up the ladder for a hip replacement and a liver transplant. We drove back to the UK this winter just so we could take the dog with us and check out what I could claim back after 65 years of fighting for king and country (mostly in bars). Sorry granddad the woman in the burka said, we’ve moved the goalposts, you now have to be 86 years old with at least one arm or leg missing to qualify, but your dog’s quite cute so here’s a voucher for some doggy treats. I was quite surprised how dog friendly they were in the pubs. Every bar had a bowl of dog treats on the counter. No peanuts or crisps for the punters but loads of chummy, snaky, liver and

prime steak flavoured chewies. I wasn’t allowed to smoke but my dog was allowed to piss up the wall, so I joined him. Quad bikes. What is the point? It’s not a bike and it’s not a jeep. It’s not fast. It’s not sexy and unless you’re an exhibitionist with someone else’s consenting wife you can’t bonk on the back seat. Also it’s a given than when you’re in a big long tailback, when you finally get to the front, there will be 6 quad bikes parked up taking photos of each other falling off. You may as well ride an unbroken mustang with a tendency to suddenly roll in the dust with you still in the saddle. In sailing terms it would be the equivalent of sailing a canoe with a 60 foot mast in the Southern Oceans...hey there’s one for the Guinness book of records any takers? So why are they so popular? Our tourists flock to rent ‘em having never touched a bike since their childhood tricycle and decide the Greek road are the right place to learn so armed with their trusty E111 medical cards off they go……straight to ward 6 covered in Betadine, thinking why didn’t I rent a Fiat Punto with air con. So unless you are in a canoeing in the Southern Ocean I hope to see you on the Start line. 3 Yamas

Southern Ionian Rally 2018 Once again it's Rally and Regatta time – Hoorah!!

as senior race officers alongside Mike Olive-Jones and Janet Burgess – all seasoned racers themselves and Jan Dennison will be joining us to. Mat Biggs our computer geek arrives triumphant after winning the winter race series in his home port in New Zealand. So you couldn't be in better hands except that I am in charge!

Having just returned from a month sailing on the west coast of the USA and Canada it's great to be back in our beautiful Ionian Islands and time to concentrate my efforts on the action here. I also attended my niece's wedding on route back – a very strange affair as her husband and all their friends are members of The Sealed Knot who reenact ancient battles. It verged on bizarre nearly as mad as the lunacy that is life in Lefkada but I think we can still beat them on that front.

We will be continuing to use the RYA Handicap system which everyone seemed very happy with last year or should I say we didn't get any complaints or whinges which is a major achievement I can tell you.

We have had a revamp of the courses this year as we felt it was time for a change and you all needed a new challenge. So make sure you read your race notes carefully this year that's providing you can read something other than a chart or Mr Heikell's pilot book. S/Y Rumba who many of you now know will be committee boat again and you can't miss her as she looks lovely in her designer flags. My great team from previous years are back with Pat Simpson and Gilly Foulds

So I hope you are going to join us for 4 days of fun, frolics and sailing to enjoy some favourite haunts as well as some new venues because it's you who makes the party happen with encouragement from us. But beware the onesie of shame is still out there to be won each day!! Cheers and look forward to seeing you on the water. 6

Ramblings from an Old Git We first came to Nidri 25 years ago when there used to be telephone booths she might just leave you a wedge so you in the high street and an apple was can one day own a new Sadler or something you could buy in the fruit and Moody, Anyway clutching a new phone veg shop and walk outside and eat it . A card bought at extortionate money from walk down the sea front or any local the local kiosk it's off to queue at the harbour would see a few flotillas around phone booth as times knocking on and and the chance to cast envious glances Aunty will be worrying she hasn't heard at the Cobra 850s run by Sunworld and from you ! the sporty Jags run by Sailing holidays Finally after only 40 minute wait and but wait ....what's that big boat over your turn to get to use the there, wow a Sadler 32 ! How do folk phone....observed by the other folk in handle that after the the queue behind 28 footers or that you who are now Oi‌! Can I fabulous centre cockpit firm holiday pals as use your Moody 34 , that must we've all been stood be the ultimate in there so long . luxury with all that Now for all you folks space to rock around in who have ever only and it has a shower phoned home on a inside so you don't mobile the Greek have to wash yer bits n pieces through phone booth was installed as a method your shorts with a few hundred curious of entertaining firstly the on-going queue diners looking on as they enjoy a via a series of deep breaths, tutting , seafront dinner . banging receiver down , picking up As you gaze round awestruck at the listening for bleeps and lots of sheer size of this new breed of boats a Hullo ,hullo ,f...k it's cut off ,and secondly quick glance at your watch and you a massive earner for OTE realise it's time to give great Aunty communications company who you Margret a phone call so she knows might think would make the phones you've arrived in far flung Greece and work properly ..but wait ..it didn't work 10 haven't been thrown in the nick for like that ! Once you'd keyed in your 500 taking pictures at airports and of course digit phone card number three times to

hear Great Aunty Margret shouting " I can't hear you properly " your phone card is empty , surprisingly after only a few words that's 5,000 drachma vanished and replacing the bleeping phone you leave the booth trying to look as though the call was a success in front of your new holiday pals. So after just two hours you've managed to make lots of new fiends in the phone queue, spoken for a few seconds putting family minds at rest and been royalty fleeced by OTE phone company on behalf of the Greek government . A walk past the boats again on the way to get some money after being mugged by OTE and you notice one of the new Sigma 32 s is moored in the corner, wow what a racing machine that looks compared to a Jag or Cobra , how on earth do people afford to buy and run kit like that . Okay so away from the harbour and it's time to cash a travellers cheque in the local tourist office , out comes the travellers cheque book and just twenty minutes later your on your way out of the office wondering why that ÂŁ100

11

bought 5 million drachma but you only got 1 million ...then it hits you ,COMMISION !! Following the OTE scam you now been double fleeced quite openly by the lovely black haired Greek girl in the tourist office who when you had the nerve to question why your ÂŁ100 will now buy you a frappe explained in broken Greek/ English that it's always the same and you have been lucky to get that rate as tomorrow isn't looking good . Fast forward a lot of years and what's different ? Walk down any harbour seafront and you'll be hard pressed to spot a boat under 30ft , flotillas with 3840 ft plus boats sleeping dozens of people don't even get a second glance. A bloke from the harbour authority will be round to relive you of some cash for mooring up- you know he's coming when you look round and realise your the only one who didn't spot him as all the rest are hiding down below but too late he's filling in the receipt for your fee ! Other than that the legendary Greek friendliness remains ,the roads are still mostly crap, the toilets still don't have seats , still putting paper in the bins ,still see three blokes with shovels stood looking at a pothole that potentially might get filled in ,still have families of five all on one motorbike without a helmet with driver having a coffee , still a great place to visit and long may it stay like this !

Regatta Poet Laureate Elaine I think we'll do the regatta The skipper said to me It's fun, it's cool, you'll like it More fun than the North Sea. I was a little doubtful It's a cruising yacht you see It's big it's slow, it's heavy And his only crew is me. We'll hoist the pretty cruising chute It's quite a sight you know It's red and blue and yellow It will really make us go. It's not my place to argue I'll do as I am told Helm, tack and gybe and reef Attempting to be bold. So at the start I panic As I stow our things away Our teapot, kettle and guitar Put away for another day. The gun goes off we've started

Crossing the line in style We tack, we lean, we're happy The skipper starts to smile. The wind gets up we’re surfing Catching lots of yachts Pursuing, luffing, passing, Are we last? we’re not. Now we’re on the home straight The cruising Shute is up The wind, the waves, the sunshine Could we win the cup? We've crossed the line we’re happy The regatta has been fun Now we'll party, party, party. Until the musics done.

Racing a floating caravan We followed our dream to live aboard and sail away, leaving Newcastle on Tyne in June 2010. We'd bought our Moody 44 Mychi 2 years earlier after a four year search for the perfect liveaboard yacht. Comfort was more important than speed. We wanted plenty of room for two people with space for occasional guests. We wanted a proper full sized bed where one didn't have to climb over ones partner to go to the loo in the night and a bed where one could sit up and read,

stuff to stow, 28 cupboard doors and 16 drawers to secure, laptop, iPads, musical instruments put in places of safety, dingy to put on deck and life jackets and lifelines to put near at hand ( for us and the dog). Add to this we sail short handed, I.e just the two of us ( three if you count our dog whose role is more to do with security rather than sailing). Our sails were getting old and baggy and putting up our cruising chute needed at least a days noWe had not considered racing Mychi until tice and an half hour of frantic activity we got to Levkas and heard about the from the skipper. The start of the race was exciting with yachts flying flags of many nations milling around narrowly avoiding each other mostly. There were the racing boats with their Kevlar sails and uniformed crews, there were the flotilla crews, already in party mode raising their sails for the first time this season, there were the charter yachts with crews looking terrified in the melee, and there was us and the other live aboards concerned that our floating homes would be fatally damaged in the crush.

We crossed the line in 36th position and we were happy with that, though our dog Toto missed out on the prize for first dog over the line by 5 seconds.. The next year we were raring to give it another try. This time we invited friends to sail with us. Dave and Jackie are experienced dinghy sailors and were much more focussed on sailing as fast as possible, even refusing a beer even though it was mid afternoon and hot. There was a moment of panic at the start when 120 yachts went off in one direction and 6 23 went off in another, we were one of the 6. However Dave had listened carefully

It’s all Chinese to me! Yes we lnow that every conceivable electrical gizmo we buy form a smart phone to a deceased gold fish liquidiser and juicing machine comes from China. Even my multi-function turbo reversible coffee grinder and macerator is from Wan-King province home of the infamous plastic dog turd. So it’s only a rail link across the Atlantic and inventing a rice based Yorkshire pudding that’s holding back their Super Power status. So why oh why can’t they employ a person whose mother tongue is English to translate their user manuals? I can understand Russian instructions more easily than their English ones! These are excerpts taken from the dozens of Chinese manuals from the endless crap that I have purchased over the years.

Many of you will have spotted the ridiculously fast Wldwind catamarans zipping past you as you go around the ouside of Arkoudi Island. They are usually crewed by bronzed athletes whooping and hollering as they zoom past at speeds of up to 20 knots, one hull in the air while standing on the other. These exciting vessels have been competing in the southern Ionian Regatta since it’s conception over 30 years ago and have recently celebrated their own 30 year anniversary in Vasikili with a spectacular array of on the water events and shore based prize giving celebrations and general partying. The catamarans have their own start

line off Camping Kastri near Ammousa and join the yachts as they emerge around the East coast of Arkoudi. The aim is to pass all the yacht and fly on ahead….they always do!! In the Wildwind catamaran regatta the prizes are Line Honours, First with Handicap and First Hobie 16 If you fancy having a go, check out the Wildwind website, where you will find all the info you need. This well established and experienced company always has rave revues, massive return guests and a wonderful reputation….. but for now see you in Sivota!
