SELECTED TITLES

2011

Fagotto books was founded in 1984. Right from the start, it brought a new perspective to the way of learning music. Books full of life and enjoyment, with the complement of auxiliary acoustic material (audio tapes then, CD today), opened the way to amateur musicians, concerning the approach to the instrument they were interested in. All books are based on the idea that music is not a forbidden ground for the non specialists, neither is its learning an ascetic occupation of the few. Today, the way we study music changes, because music itself changes. New kinds of music emerge, new instruments are invented. The tendency to different music cultures taking part equally on the international music stage is strengthened. Technology transforms the music field. Computers, virtual reality and Internet discover new possibilities for composition, performance, production, storing and management of the musical creation. What is the basic music knowledge that has to be transmitted to the student and to the lover of music in the 21st century? What competencies should the student develop, so that he can be up to the contemporary musical demands? What are the most adequate ways to research basic concepts and music principles? Fagotto books responds to these questions by offering, to an audience interested in music, books that correspond today’s demands. It is not by chance that some titles from fagottobooks’ catalogue are recommended by Greek Universities (such as Athens, Macedonia, Thessalia, Aristotle, Ionian, etc.) and Schools of Music and have been considered reference books for the School Libraries by the Ministry of Education. Although music is the main object of our publications, in recent years fagotto books have expanded into other fields.

SMYRNEIKA AND PIREOTIKA REBETIKA URBAN AND FOLK SONGS OF PRE-WAR GREECE (1922-1940) Evgenios Voulgaris & Basilis Vantarakis This edition, in collaboration with the Epirus Technological Institute (Publications of the Department of Popular and Traditional Music), is a contribution to the bibliography of rebetika songs, containing an important number of recordings of the pre-war period (1922-1940) regarding compositions of the urban repertory. All the well known composers of the era: Grigoris Asikis; Markos Vamvakaris; Dimitris Gogos (Bayaderas); Anestis Delias; Antonis Diamantidis (Dalgas); Yiannis Dragatsis (Ogdontakis); Costas Karipis; A.Kostis; Iakovos Montanaris; Dimitris Baroussis (Barous or Lorentzos); Yiorgos Batis; Stavros Pantelidis; Vaggelis Papazoglou; Spyros Peristeris; Costas Roukounas; Dimitris Semsis; Costas Skarvelis; Costas Tzovenos; Panagiotis Tountas; Yiovan Tsaous; Vassilis Tsitsanis; Emmanuil Chryssafakis and others are represented in this selection, which is based on criteria of aesthetics as much as emphasis on particular melodious developments. This musical material is of course not unknown, but is here approached for the first time systematically through the theoretical system of the makam. This methodological originality aims at bringing out the modal character of the compositions through the analysis and codification of their musical structures. The first part of the volume contains a practical guide to acquaint the reader with the makam as forms of melody as well as composite observations deriving from the modal analysis of the repertory. The study as a whole aspires to constitute a convenient field for turning to account, on multiple levels, the material treated, according to the diverse requirements of a broad and heterogeneous public attracted to the multi-dimensional world of pre-war urban popular song. 23.5*28 360 €35.00 ISMN: M-801151-17-9 Language: Greek

ΤΗΕ ‘KANONAKI’ IN 78 RPM Apostolos Tsardakas The ‘kanonaki’ – a sort of dulcimer – is an instrument whose role in forming Greek folk music has yet to be researched. Despite its undisputed place in Greek organology, its presence has been debased for decades whilst what has been written about its repertory and musicians is not always adequately documented. The present book attempts to sketch the position of the instrument in contemporary Greek music through its contribution to 78 RPM discography, which is the oldest recording and therefore the most valuable testimony.

TRADITIONAL MELODIES FOR PIANO vol. 1 & 2 Compiled and Arranged by: Dimitris Pyrghiotis The widely familiar traditional Greek music, at the level of collective musical life, continues, as proven, to be an «unknown land» at the level of formal educational practice. The motive of these editions is to supply beginners in music, who are at the initial learning phase of the instrument with this sort of material, which will allow them to practise the rhythms and melody of the art of traditional music. A fertile musical imagination is the constant objective. Basic elements of these arrangements are: • adoption of unadorned versions of the melody.

• balanced succession of the melody’s phrases between the two hands, as well as suggestions for recommended fingering. The overall spirit beyond the arrangements is the wish to reduce the influence of the filter of contemporary harmony, enabling the traditional tone to emerge.

THE ART OF THE RECORDER Compiled and Arranged by: Nikos Sakellariou Anthology of traditional songs and dances from various areas of Greece arranged to solo recorder. The recorder-playing techniques proposed in the book (such as articulation, ornamenti, glissando and pizzicato), reflect traditional recorderplaying styles. Moreover, the key strokes recommended for different notes provide solutions to possible technical problems. The book is aimed at students of conservatoires and schools, music teachers, professional musicians and music lovers. ISMN: M-801151-06-3 29*21 << 8

THE LYRE OF PONTUS Michalis Kaliontzidis The area of the music of Pontus constitutes a space to be discovered and explored, to which end this book has been composed. It is a study of the most emblematic of Pontian music’s symbols, the lyre, which is here researched in the entire spectrum of its substance, from organology and technique to the repertory and the role it plays in a tradition still alive. It is written by one of its most active instrumentalists, the lyre-player Michalis Kaliontzidis, eschewing the oft-trodden path of unintegrated and distanced scientific research and bearing witness in this volume to what he has experienced, living through many years of all the multifarious aspects of the art. 23*28 92 €20.00 ISMN: 979-0-801151-36-0 Language: Greek

THESAURUS OF MUSICAL SCALES Dimitris Pyrghiotis 2048 Scales • Western Music Scales • Symmetrical Scales • Jazz Scales • Greek Music Scales • Byzantines Scales • Arab-Turkish Makam • Tonal Harmony • Neo-tonal Harmony • Blues, Rock and Jazz Harmony • a- tonal Harmony and the Twelve Tone Line. “The Thesaurus of Musical Scales will be the fundamental tool for all who

wish to have essential knowledge of the laws governing musical structure”.

Theodore Andoniou

Composer-Conductor , Professor at the University of Boston , President of the Greek Composers’ Union

The anguish and need on the part of the musician to control and organize the material - especially the musical notes and combinations - is a fact well known to all. The Thesaurus of Musical Scales grants the musician this liberty. All the scales, all the possible combinations of the musical notes are here presented. The 2048 scales of our musical chord system are presented and classified according to the number of notes that constitute them (form), their interval vector, their set class, their type of schematization (category) and their symmetry. The only thing the musician has to do is to experiment, to select and to compose. However, the extension of the Thesaurus is not restricted to the transcription/music notation and juxtaposition of scales. In a summarized and objective manner, the second part contains the musical systems in combination of music pitches defining music today: tonal harmony, Jazz, Greek traditional music, Byzantine music, ArabTurkish makam, neo-tonal harmony and Greek traditional music, a-tonal harmony and twelve-tone line. It then becomes evident that the purpose of the Thesaurus is to be a “ little encyclopedia of music pitches”. It becomes this way a supporting instrument for study, analysis and composition. 21.*28 544 €35.00 ISMN: M-801151-01-8 Language: Greek

SOUNDS OF SILENCE - MODERN JAZZ COMBINATIONS Markos Alexiou Presented in this book are various elements of music, based on scales and chords, which are used both in jazz and also in other forms of modern music. My goal is to assist you, the learner, as you read and listen to the written and recorded material, to be able to discover and develop within yourself aspects of music still unimaginable to you. Further, I hope to guide you, through the use of the new and creative ideas, towards the freedom and the joy that come from musical expression. In closing, I feel the need to emphasize that the teacher’s role is not only to form a fine student but mainly to guide him and stimulate him with progressive ideas and sounds toward the enrichment of what he himself possesses. He, in turn, will then do his part.

MUSIC MODES OF EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN Marios Mavroidis This book gives the reader a comprehensive picture of the musical system of the Mediterranean and Near East. Arab and Turkish secular song music and Eastern Orthodox Church music, the Byzantine, are jointly analyzed and compared. A major part of the subject treated is dedicated to music intervals, in an attempt, firstly, to give a complete image of the aspects from Antiquity to our days and secondly to clarify the concepts for a contemporary and defined specificity of the subject. The most important part of the book regards modal shapes and their functioning, the meaning, the sounds of the Byzantine music and the Arab and Turkish makam. The different systems are juxtaposed comparatively in such a way as to clarify both common and distinctive points between them. The material is presented in a manner to make it accessible to all, even those without specialized knowledge of the subject, while the theoretical portion is complemented with supplements of musical examples from proficient compositions in the different modal systems examined. 17*24 344 €28.00 ISBN:978-960-7075-47-5 Language: Greek 13 >>

The photographs in the album have been specially treated so that the detail is enhanced. “ Today, about a hundred years after they were taken, one is struck by these photographs’ high standard of artistic quality and accuracy of detail. Drpfeld nearly always featured human figures in them, to give a better impression of dimensions and proportions. They are therefore, whether consciously or accidentally, contributions to the technique of illustration, which became a tradition of popularity, utilizing the theme of vestiges of antiquity in art, since all the photographs reflect the romantic concept of communion between mankind and nature, on a background with the grandeur of ancient ruins, mute testimony to our civilization brought to light by the archaeologist’s pickaxe.” Wolfger Pohlmann Head of Arts, Goethe Institut Athen 22*24.5 88 €20.00 / Price Hardcover: € 28.00 ISBN: 978-960-6685-11-8 Language: Greek-English-German

LEFKADA, A JOURNEY IN TIME Fritz Berger Fritz Berger’s book is a proposal to become acquainted with a place. Photographs and text invite us on a reminiscing route of reflection upon the days after the 1960s of the daily life of Lefkada, mainly in the southern part. In Berger’s own words: “I carry my memories of Lefkada inside me as images. They are images full of light and shade, shapes and colour, full of people, flowers, trees, hills and the sea. I see the sorrowful eyes of women in elegant local costume, I see a caf caf full of men playing backgammon, I taste Akrivi’s aromatic homemade bread and the olives served with it, the spicy cheese. I hear the donkeys, the goats, the sheep, the ceaseless trill of the cicadas everywhere. They are images which remain or which come up only for a short while. Then houses appear that were damaged by the earthquake, a cold night and the old lady, Arsenia sitting alone in front of the fire.” 13*19 108 €15.00 ISBN: 978-960-6685-01-2 Language : Greek-English

COOKING

THE COOKERY OF LEFKADA - Greece/Ionian Islands Evie Voutsina A book about cooking as well as about the people of Lefkada, written by a Lefkadian author, for this land of azure light, of the olive tree and cypress, of emerald seas. Evie Voutsina returns to her roots in writing this book, after having roamed around the whole of Greece for at least twelve years, researching and recording the country’s gastronomic culture. Her search does not stop at writing down recipes. She is interested in the techniques of food preparation, the conditions of life, the human aspect and all the ‘little touches’ that give each dish its particular taste: everything that constitutes the ethos of food. In the end result, while collecting recipes and listening to the stories around them, Evi Voutsina’s work is also folklore: the axis of her books is the turning seasons, the rhythms and harmony of nature; the leading role is the essence of Greek cooking (and more broadly, Mediterranean cuisine), which is the measure of it all. Pre-eminently, however, the protagonists are the people, those who are willing to share their memories with us, who will tell their charming stories of the past, with which in simplicity, yesterday is bridged to today.

AUTHENTIC GREEK COOKING Evie Voutsina ‘The dishes of Greek cookery, in particular those that constitute its identity, are largely unknown to the broader public. This is not the book in which to find the recipes usually contained in such publications, such as moussaka, stuffed vegetables or horiatiki salad, mainly because they are already well known and almost identified with a tourist’s perception of Greek cuisine. From the vast wealth of recipes I have recorded in the systematic research I have been conducting over the past fourteen years all over the country, I selected (with great difficulty, I have to admit) those presented in this book for their quality of taste as well as for what I consider to be their representativeness of the identity of Greek food. I call them authentic because they are not my own recipes, they were not concocted by myself and are transcribed exactly as I wrote them down. Wherever I have added something it is specifically mentioned in the introduction to the recipe. I have tried and tested them, cooking them over and over again, so that I am sure you will have no difficulty in making them.’ E.V. 19,5*24 104 15€ ISBN: 978-960-6685-34-7 21 >>

Petros Kouropoulos In the tumult of the modern age, the words of Petros Kouropoulos sound limpid and illuminated. “Life cannot be artificially gilded. We breathe it moment by moment, as it is, as it comes, as we fantasize it. We experience its current all over us, from inside the appeal of the attraction of the genders and the fumes of the war mechanisms of greed. We balance inhalation towards expiration, expiration towards inhalation, and we absorb in silence the experience of the past. Its current launches the action and prepares the next step. We smile with the greatest paradox we live in, the present that springs from everywhere and floods everything. It impels towards every direction.
