PROJECT : 1 Self-Initiated Project Stage 3 : Project 2
The Islamic Cultural Centre of Peckham : London, 2025 & The Islamic Expansion .. For the past decade, London has been a major ground for foreign economical investments. Arabs and Muslims are one of, if not, the most impor tant investor s in London. With projects and developments that swept the capital, such as One Hyde Par k, The Olympic Village and Harrods. The majority of Londoners see this as an Arab invasion, in contrast to this, a major Islamic (Extremist) group is formulating a “United Caliphate of the New Islamic London” as described by “Al-Muhajroun”. Al-Muhajroun is a group based in nor th London (Newham) that preaches hatespeeches against the “west” and false accusations that only smears the respected and peaceful religion of Islam. One of the main issues that is occurring, is the “Shariah Law Zone” in London, formulated by the Po l i c e o f V i c e a n d V i r t u e ” o r t h e M u s l i m v i g i l a n t e s . The police would wander the streets of London banning and prohibiting alcohol, smoking, music, etc. This is 2013 .. In 2025, my project predicts a rather extreme scenario. The current situations might get wor se i f t h e s e i s s u e s a r e n o t a d d r e s s e d i m m e d i a t e l y. T h e project predicts that the Muslim vigilantes would “ w r a p ” a r e a s i n L o n d o n u n d e r t h e S h a r i a h L Aw. O n e o f t h e p o s s i bly e f fe c t e d a r e a s i s Pe c k h a m , S o u t h w a r k . Tr a p p e d b e t w e e n t h r e e M u s l i m / E x t r e m i s t p o p u l a t e d areas in London (Waltham For rest, Newham and To w e r H a m l e t s ) . D u e t o i t s l o c a t i o n , P e c k h a m w o u l d b e f o r c e d t o f o l l ow t h e S h a r i a h L aw, t h u s b e c o m i n g a Shariah controlled zone. The project goes beyond 2025, and predicts not only the rise of the Muslim vigilantes, but their fall. The scenario twists itself by predicting that the English Defense League would team up with the English government and the Islamic League of Nations to fight and destroy the misconception of the true meaning and understanding of Islam.
The program is a respond to all the situations that effected Pe c k h a m . W i t h t h e f a l l o f t h e S h a r i a h L aw Z o n e , my proposal is erected as a monument that celebrates the fall of the Muslim vigilantes as well as the highlight the correct understanding of Islam. My program is a secular response to the misconception of Islam, as apposed to the situation, it consists of a Bazaar / Souq (Open-Air Market) for trading oriental carpets, dates and other Islamic merchandise. T h e p r o g r a m ’ s m o s t i m p o r t a n t f e a t u r e i s t h e Tu r k i s h - s t y l e Hammam (Bath House) that links as an urban catalyst with t h e r e s t o f Pe c k h a m . T h e p r o g r a m a l s o fe a t u r e s a M a d r a s a h / M a s r a h ( M e e t i n g R o o m / L e c t u r e H a l l ) . M o r e o v e r, t h e program also hosts an additional element, The Minaret ( L i g h t h o u s e ) a s a s y m b o l i c f e a t u r e a n d t o c a l l f o r p r a y e r.

The architectur al str ategy is der ived from Paul Vir ilio’s concept of the “ O bl i q u e ” . Va r i l l i o, much like my program, challenged the traditional built environment by implementing a political message in collapsing the ver tical and horizontal walls and using the building as an oblique / c o n t i n u o u s j o u r n e y. B y e m b e d d i n g V i r i l i o ’ s c o n c e p t i n t o t h e design, the proposal then forms multiplication of spaces w h i c h c r e a t e s c u l t u r a l h y b r i d i t y b e t w e e n E a s t a n d We s t . The Minaret in my proposal has a different language, the l a n g u a g e o f t h e v e r t i c a l , f o r i t a d d r e s s e s M u s l i m s o n l y. The building formulates a sectional pattern, caused by the oblique, that seems fragmented but it is unified through dynamic circulations. The pattern would escape to the e x t e r i o r, f o r m i n g s m a l l p e r f o r a t i o n s . My program, my proposal and my scenario might not solve the issues, and will not fully represent the true meaning meaning of Islam and might not inform the correct understanding of Islamic culture, but, I would like to think that it is a star t.

P e c k h a m i s k n o w n a n d c h a r a c t e r i z e d b y i t s d i v e r s i t y. In the past it has been prosperous commercial and manufacitrung centre, residential area and a point of passage in the route from the south of London. In the 20th centur y the social tissue has radically changed, from the local social clusters described in t h e “ P e c k h a m B a l l a d ” t o t h e c u r r e n t m i x e d e t h n i c i t y. D u e t o a s o c i o - e c o n o m i c d ow n t u r n , Pe c k h a m h a s l o s t i t s p r e v i o u s r e l e v a n c e a n d t u r n i n t o d e c a y, accentuated by the high rise housing states that have been plagued by vandalism and violent crime , b e c o m i n g o n e o f t h e m o s t d e p r i v e d a r e a s i n t h e c i t y. My proposal is a respond to the social apar theid and socio-economic separation between the “white” British middle-class residents and the AfroCarribean working class. Through various research and inter views of the fabric shop owners and tailors, the area is in desperate need for a communal building that provides ser vices for tailoring fabric a n d l a u n d r y. T h e p r o g r a m i s l i n k e d t o t h e u r b a n f a b r i c o f Pe c k h a m t h r o u g h t h e “ U r b a n C a r p e t ” . The urban carpet is a concept developed by Zaha Hadid that suggests pulling the street pattern into the building, providing a continuity between the outside and inside, thus ser ves as a public space. The architectural strategy is derived from the c o n c e p t a n d f o l l o w s t h e p a t h o f M AT b u i l d i n g s . T h e M AT s t r a t e g y i s c o n s i d e r e d a s a v i a b l e d e s i g n approach that can respond to the crucial need for equally accessible, adjustable and adaptable built environments for all people around the world. M o r e o v e r, i t i s a m u l t i l a y e r e d i n f r a s t r u c t u r a l s h e e t that cover s the entire site by multiplying the urban ground.
The program has three elements, Production (tailoring ser vice), Communal (laundr y ser vice) and Leisure (outdoor / indoor cinema). The fabric cycle connects all three programs by the use of fabric itself. The tailoring ser vice includes, yarn making, communal tailoring, fabric dyeing and bespoke tailoring. The communal laundr y is inspired by the communal / open-air laundr y (Dhobi Ghat) in Mumbai, India. The Dhobi Ghat are large rows of concrete wash p e n s t h a t b r i n g t h e w h o l e c i t y t o g e t h e r, t o w a s h . T h e c i n e m a i s l o c a t e d i n f r o n t o f Pe c k h a m R ye s t a t i o n a s a leisure quality to take a break from the busy and chaotic life of the highstreet. The program also hosts the “in-between” gardens that are inspired by the movement of Osmosis in the capillaries, by moving from high pressure (laundr y and tailoring) to low pressure (garden and cinema). The building consists of a series of concrete perforation to frame the experience and to give snips of what is happening inside. The building is also linked to the environment, by erecting chimneys that collect water and to send light to the dark spaces.

T h e h i g h s t r e e t o f K e n t i s h To w n r o a d i s a mixture of national retail chains, independent shops and open-air markets. The area has always been noted for its pubs and bars, where Punk, Jazz and Rock are constantly played. Going back in time, during the 19th centur y and early 20th centur y the a r e a o f K e n t i s h To w n b e c a m e , f o r m a n y y e a r s , t h e home of many piano and organ manufacturers, and described by The Piano Journal in 1901 as “…that healthful suburb dear to the hear t of the piano maker”. In recent year s, almost all the piano and o r g a n m a n u f a c t u r e r s d i s a p p e a r e d . M o r e o v e r, a l l t h e pubs and bars do not host Punk and Rock concer ts due to political and residential reasons. The program is a product of resurrecting lost and f o r g o t t e n q u a l i t i e s o f C a m d e n To w n . T h r o u g h t h e musical, industrial and sonic histor y of Kentish To w n , I h a v e d e v e l o p e d a h y b r i d p r o g r a m t h a t combines concer t halls for Punk music and Piano repair workshops. The concept is inspired by the g o d d e s s q u e e n o f P u n k , V i v i e n n e We s t w o o d . T h e concept creates a hybrid by combining something that is ver y classical and fragile with something t h a t i s c h a o t i c a n d r aw. T h e a r c h i t e c t u r a l s t r a t e g y is inspired by the upright piano key mechanism that formulates a musical landscape that escalates from the groundscape which represents the rise of Punk music. The material strategy is also linked to the rise of Punk music by oxidizing copper which represents the flourish of Punk music. The proposal ser ves the public by illuminating light and sound through the scattered copper facade; and projects music though a series of folding and lifting roofs. The systematic fragmentation of the building represents the chaotic state of “Punk”.

In the future , Punk music will keep on declining due to the negative response from the gover nment and the gener al public . The Punk-Rock industr y is now concidered to be “under ground. THE FUTURE OF THE HIGH STREET : SPECULATIVE COLLAGE
The speculative collage suggests isolation and the lack of human to nature interaction. People in the future are going to be anti-social due to the speed and pace of our contemporar y society. The solution is to create an inter active installation that helps the people to be more aware of their surroundings both natural and ar tificial.
EXPIREMENTATION/DEVELOPMENT : THE WIND DRESS
The Wind Dress is one of many wind related expirementations. The dress is designed in a simple , minimal and suggestive way. It suggets what the project is about, and how nature (wind) can be adapted and seen as par t of the anatomy. A several maps were drawn showing where the wind dress was tested on the highstreet.
EXPIREMENTATION/DEVELOPMENT : THE ARTIFICIAL LANDSC APE
Proposal 1 : The Ground
The landscape models are done by using air-filled balloons to suggest the effect of wind and air on heavier objects. The models are then re-defined and used as the ground, the landscape and the canopy of The Wind Sanctuar y’s installation.
